How exactly does a bullet work and why aren't casings made of aluminum instead of brass?

Primer is a cup shape filled with a compound that ignites when compressed, in the cup is a hard bit of metal that provides the firm surface for the compound to be mashed against. The flame goes through two small holes in the back of the casing, ignite the powder, powders turns into hot gas that expands very quickly with a lot of force, pushes the bullet out.
Some ammo uses aluminum cases. Beast is best because it is strong but also malleable, so it can be reused. If a country doesn't care about that they can use steel (cheapest option).

Try relaxing your dominant hand, it doesn't need to have any pressure really because the non-dominant hand can be used to provide pressure for grip and stability. With little or no tension in your dominant fingers the sympathetic movement should be minimal.

Brass is more inert than aluminum.

Completely irrelevant, once the surface is oxidised. Brass obturates better and is generally easier to work with, that's why it gets used.

Which magazine would a 44-40 fit in the best?

A tube mag designed for it. If you mean a box mag the SMLE should be pretty close and deals with rims well.

    What’s a slam fire shotgun?

A shotgun that lacks a trigger disconnect. This allows the hammer to drop as the action is cycled forward, as long as the trigger remains depressed. You have to close the action very quickly for the hammer to strike with sufficient force to ignite the primer, hence the term "slam."
The best example of this is the Winchester 1897 pump shotgun. I once had a modern Rossi clone of a Winchester. 22cal pump action rifle "gallery gun" that would slam fire .22. It took .22 short, long, or long rifle, and would hold around 20 rounds of .22 short in the tube mag. It was a ton of fun.

Is anyone still making slam shotguns?

          No.

That's the basic idea though some work quite differently. The Ithaca 37 for example has a disconnector, but it also has a special protrusion on the hammer which acts as a second sear and drops the hammer by design while the pump is operated and the trigger is held down. A lot of the time slamfiring can be thought of as an unintended malfunction, but some guns were designed to do it, like the Ithaca 37. Those guns don't have to be closed quickly or literally "slammed", simply cycling the pump slowly will do it.
This article explains in a lot of detail with good pictures:
        https://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?439187-Slam-fire-vs-Nonslam-fire-Ithaca-37

I have one of those older Ithaca 37s, it is an early 1970's police model. It does slamfire, which is cool the first time you try it for shits and grins but it's pretty much useless for anything other than causal range blasting. Actually using the trigger is a zillion times more accurate and hardly any slower.

what does this mean, you can rotate the cylinder backwards? i heard it's so cowboy action shooters can top off load without having to spin all the way around to get back to the empty chamber. when i tried to look it up i found a bunch of people saying they hated it and it broke immediately. can any vaquero owners explain?

      >you can rotate the cylinder backwards?
Yes, you can rotate it either direction whereas on a traditional SAA the cylinder only rotates one direction.
I don't own one so I can't comment on its longevity, I just handled one at a gun store. But I will say this: there's a lot of fudds when it comes to cowboy action guns, and plenty of people will b***h about any new feature that's not exactly like the old west guns were made simply because they don't like the idea of it and not because they have any firsthand experience. If people are breaking them it should be easy enough to find photos of the busted parts.

how in the frick do I adjust windage on my pistol? I have a rear novak sight but the fricker looks practically glued into place. Do I really need some kind of wacky or expensive pusher tool just to adjust my shit slightly to the right?

If you prefer, you can hold the slide in a vise (padding the jaws, of course, so they don't scratch your slide) and then use a hammer and a punch to try and drift the sight to the side. This is a pain though, it's not very controllable so it's hard to move the sight just a little without moving it too much, you'll probably move it too far by accident, then move it too far to the left trying to fix that screwup, and repeat for a while until you finally get lucky and get it right. And around that time you'll have spent $$$ in ammo and put a lot of dings in your sight from the punch.

If you do, don't use a punch. Use a dowel or bit of plastic rod.
That said an ebay knockoff sight pusher is going to set you back about $20, work just fine, and let you make small adjustments on the range saving a lot of time and minimising shots/trips needed.
