Computer says 'shooting at spent shotgun shells at approximately 25 yards is equivalent to shooting at a man-sized target from a distance of about 666.67 yards.'

It really depends on how close you think a shotshell matches a human target. I'm going by the following logic:
A fired 12ga hull should be roughly 3" long. Figure a man is 5 feet high, or 60 inches. So you're off by a factor of 20, the 12ga hull at 25 yards is about the same as a human at 500.
It really depends on what you consider effective on a human though, if you use a typical head-and-torso target for the comparison instead of a standing man that's only about 30" high, or 10x the amount, so 25 yards with a shotshell approximates 250 yards. That's probably the more realistic approximation.

Is this better than the aero ultralight mount?

Yes. Its rings are top mounted and Aero has a hinge system that I've heard can break at the worst time.

Been an expat for almost 4 years now and when I get home I'm trying to figure out which carry pistol I'm getting. I'm honestly not terribly interested in a glock, sorry. I'm considering a CZ 75 Compact. Any good?

      Anonymous

Personally I prefer the Jericho when it comes to CZs, they make compact versions too. Also make them both steel frame and polymer, slide or frame mounted safety. I prefer steel always, but it seems like the more compact ones are polymer.
A lot of that's just my autism for the octagonal rifling though, barrel doesn't wear out as much and doesn't get dirtied as badly as long as you're using FMJ.
Other CZ-derivative I have experience with is the Star Model 30M, probably closer to the CZ 75 than the Jericho. It's not too bad to shoot, but all the weight is in the grip so it sags uncomfortably in the holster. I found the Jericho is a very well-balanced gun weightwise, it's never uncomfortable to carry.
That's just all I have personal experience with, so take this as you will. Most of the bad stuff I've heard about the CZ 75 is just from soijak shitters who only own a Glock and an AR-15, and nothing else. The kinda guys who only see guns as political tools rather than anything else (not that they aren't, but there's more to it than that baseline npc take, guns are many more things than just that and ought to be cherished).

      Pros: accurate, reliable, sexy
      Cons: heavy, manual dewiener

That being said its my favorite carry piece if you dont mind the extra weight of it being all steel and are a DA/SA enjoyer

I love my P01 and Rami but I've had enough small parts breakages on both to sour me on CZ going forward
The fact that you need CZ custom or CGW components to make them reliable is unacceptable

More like stupid question thread cuz I have one; getting a pistol is a pain in the ass in my cucked state and I'm considering getting a PWS Mk109 upper 300 BLK. Due to the aforementioned PITA process with pistols I'm pondering if it would be worth it to swap barrel for 16 inch with appropriate gas tube and hopefully block. Would there be any issues with this idea?

      Anonymous

Alternatively, maybe pick up a MK116 PRO 16 inch upper and swap the barrel to 300 blackout?

Dont get PWS if you want to do barrel swaps, unless you have multiple PWS uppers or if youre going for PWS's DI guns. They have proprietary barrels.

Frick. I'm always glad I ask my stupid questions. Thank you.

Just build a stripped lower and buy the upper you want

Already have a rifle lower but I'm struggling to figure out a good upper. I would like a piston upper to change things up ultimately. I was also looking at a completed upper from LWRCI but it looks like they have a proprietary system which wouldn't allow you to say throw on a Geisle handguard.

Was also thinking about going with a BCM upper and piecing everything else together. But then that means no piston system? I'm still learning about that. Asked in the previous thread and got some great advice from an anon as well but still trying to figure shit out.

you can build your own piston upper, just do your research beforehand to save time on returns and rebuys

If youre looking for a piston upper you can look for an hk416 derivative, because parts will closely match.

Just go with DI, piston is overrated tbh

            Anonymous

Yeah, I'm already piecing together DI. I wanted something different but I don't see any good way to get it done. Although the new issue I'm running into is realizing how few options there are for builds in general.
            >Ordered DD barrel and shopping around for stripped upper
            >Too many stripped uppers have some proprietary feature
Just gonna go BCM upper and then figure out a handguard

Sorry for the wall of text, TL;DR is at the bottom
Just to put out the reason for my questions first: i was in the orca thread and ofc somebody referenced the orca fighter from the Command and Conquer games, this made me go into the C&C wiki to look through the other cool stuff they had in those games, for nostalgias sake.
One of those things was the M270, but while our real life M270 is ground to ground rocket artillery only, the one in the game for some reason is both Ground to Ground and AA capable.
So my question is: if it ever was considered to make an AA module that could be put in the M270 launcher, which then operated with a radar system that was installed on the same type of chassis as the M270 (the M987).

I was also in the thread about Taiwanese military procurement, there it was informed that Taiwan is buying 11 more M142 HIMARS.
These will probably just be used as normal rocket artillery as well, but since Taiwan is an island and thus it's first line of defence must be at sea (and air ofc), is it an option for modules with Anti-Ship missiles? i know that the M48 and M57 versions of ATACMS use old Harpoon warheads, but the missile itself is still only for ground targets, right?

      >TL;DR
are there AA and AShM modules for the M270 and the M142?
      >If no
Would it take much effort to develop them (and the necessary support systems)?

The FCS has only ever supported unguided, inertial, and GPS guided rockets. That said it's pretty modular so while inertial guided rockets wouldn't be great against ships it would be easy to and there's existing proposals for shooting active radar anti ship missiles from HIMARS. Same would apply for an anti air missile but you'd probably have to modify the FCS a fair bit with a data link to another radar for it to point the missile in the right direction. It's probably cheaper to just stick to specialized systems since anti ship missiles are more limited by bulk than needing some expensive FCS and anti air missiles would be too much to modify.

Yeah, you can get prescription safety glasses in Aviator style and similar styles. I'd assume that means that plain ones (no prescription) must exist too. If nothing else you could buy the prescription ones with no change in the lens.

    >MFW I hate the ATF but think that a braced pistol is an SBR no matter how you spin it
    >MFW I hate the NFA but whilst the statute exists the ATF in this instance are "technically" just following the law
Is this double think? I feel like an absolute commie for thinking like this, I don't think the NFA has any right to exist, I think it's unconstitutional, but braces have been adopted as stocks for nearly 10 years and it bothers me that people pretend otherwise.

I know, it's me again, I just wanted to ask again as I've seen a lot of videos around since the Mock v Garland injunction pop up doing the song and dance of:
        >Listen the ATF have zero grounds for this
        >Don't you know this was made for disabled veterans?
        >We never used them as stocks *wink wink nudge nudge*
And it just makes me feel autistic as frick as the ATF themselves in the final rule pointed out creators from GarandThumb to Hoplopfheil doing exactly that, multiple times and explicitly mentioning that they basically are stocks, it's been the worst kept secret for the past decade and only strengthened their argument to intervene, even for as politically motivated as it was.
I've always been an NFA avoidant schizo I'll never submit my finger prints and $200 to a national database for a suppressor when some Brit or other Euro can get theirs over the counter. It's just I don't know to express whether I'm being an autistic view of legalism or I'm being a bootlicker for understanding
        >There will come a day where they will say these are stocks
        Whilst also thinking
        >The NFA is an abomination to the constitution and should not exist, nor should the ATF.

I think it just means you're a little bit of an aspie. You're right, it's bullshit, but that fact isn't lost on anyone. Everyone knows what braces are used for, the disingenuous word games are a necessary evil wielded against the government and pointing them out doesn't make you any different from everyone else, just oblivious of the subtext attached to it

            Anonymous

It's weirder still that I legitimately understand why people are dying (rightfully) on this hill, my fear is that if it weren't for the ATF infringing now you would have a continuation of the previous status quo with the quasi-legality of pistol braces forever looming over your head like the sword of Damocles.
I can imagine some boomer buying a AR "Pistol" switching out the brace for a stock and getting a 10-15 year felony for switching it out with a proper stock. It's happened a few times with a Florida case dealing with a CZ scorpion owner doing that who was unfamiliar with the NFA.
It's bad law and now that the ATF has (imo rightfully) declared them as SBRs now hopefully under Bruen SBRs in general and not just the executive mechanism they used to do the rule change can both be challenged and in the best case scenario knock short barreled weapon laws off the NFA. Allowing the floodgates for Machine gun challenges, FFL to your door services, so on and so forth.

As you said it probably is major law autism, it just feels very cart before the horse saying the position out loud.

              >I can imagine some boomer buying a AR "Pistol" switching out the brace for a stock and getting a 10-15 year felony for switching it out with a proper stock.
When was the last time the ATF prosecuted a private citizen solely for an NFA violation? Certainly not since bruen. And you're definitely not getting 10 years over an NFA violation. Basically what's happening is we're playing chicken with them. We WANT some unlucky winner to be prosecuted so that the GOA/FPC/whomever has standing to challenge whatever regulation on constitutional grounds, a challenge they WILL win given the current state of the law post bruen.
Meanwhile, the brace concept is responsible for keeping short rifles in common use, which has the dual benefit of being a useful argument in court as well as increasing the amount of people with skin in the game.
You have autism. That's just how it is. But, rest assured, we will shelve the brace once we've beasted on the NFA

                >NFA violation
The florida case was 2022 for 21 months, but still with a felony on his record.

But as you said we are in a post-Bruen world and I've not seen any so far but I've not kept my eyes outside of the 6th circuit "crime" wise. But the cases on 18 year olds getting their handgun rights back, non-violent felons potentially getting their gun rights back and marijuana users getting their gun rights back it is super exciting to finally see the 2nd being taken seriously by circuit courts (excluding the 9th and 2nd).
As you said I want to keep an eye on things and hopefully braces are irrelevant in 3-4 years or so. Honestly, I'm not sure if I'm overdosing on hopium but I think large portions of the NFA are going to be gutted in the next decade or so.

      >think that a braced pistol is an SBR no matter how you spin it
A pistol with a STOCK that you put on it exclusively to look cool without planning to shoot it that way, even if you change your plans later, isn't an SBR by their definition. "Designed to be" is horrible wording that makes it so anything you piece together yourself is classified not by what it is, but what was going through your head hen you thought of how it was going to go together.

The NFA in general is poorly written, to be honest coming to the conclusion that only the lower was the controlled part of the firearm has been a massive boon for us in 3D2A and other places, can't imagine what it'd be like with a Euro definition i.e. Bolt, Upper, anything that bears pressure when the firearm is shot.
Which would basically leave things like triggers, mags stocks and a few other things to be shipped to our homes.

          Anonymous

It is terribly written, and a lot of it is the result of last-minute changes. Originally it was going to restrict handguns the same way that it restricts suppressors, MGs, SBRs, and so on today. That's the reason why the SBR and SBS categories are a thing: they were intended to block a loophole for people making "handguns" by cutting down long guns. But at the last minute before being passed handguns were removed from the act. However, they didn't rewrite the bits about SBRs and SBSes so now it's a real clusterfrick.

Originally, it was intended that a "smoothbore pistol" AOW was meant to be easier to get than a regular pistol--the AOW transfer tax is only $5 whereas pistols would have been the full on $200 like an SBR. Now, it's the opposite: no NFA paperwork required at all for a normal handgun, but you want a smoothbore? Time for photos, fingerprints, and a year-long wait.

Yeah I remember watching T.Rex arms' video on the NFA giving a similar overview, which, honestly should be mandatory watching for every single congress member at the State and Federal level.

For me again the biggest singular issue I have surrounding is, quite frankly, it's entire history since enactment. From US v Miller to Ruby Ridge to WACO to the current day with the Brace Amnesty, the levels in which the feds wish to enforce such a tyrannical act with even more tyrannical force, shocks me when the NFA was drafted nearly everything about the law was done in a haze of with backroom deals and negoations, the amendments in the GCA of the 18" barrel requirements going to 16" .22lr then to 16" Barrels for all rifles but not shotguns and yet it's never been taken up by the courts since Miller, it's never been looked into again properly despite it being one of the largest black marks against the constitution currently in force.
I hope Bruen changes that. Unjust and Unconstitutional law should not be enforced at all. Let alone when they go out of their way to terrorize you or god forbid turn you into a scapegoat and butcher you, your friends and families. I hope I see the NFA abolished before my mortal coil pops.

I know very little about guns, and I want to do some research for a game project idea I have about, essentially, floating fortresses. And if it doesn't pan out I wanna read about it anyway.

The closest analogy is probably naval combat, so can anyone point me to some material about the overall development of cannons/artillery and naval combat from about, say, 1800 until now? I'm looking for broad overviews, strategic and tactical considerations, technological developments, everything. Preferably books but I'll take websites as well.

I realize you didn't ask for this, but it's more useful than you realize. Look up Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, specifically his approach to fort design, aka "star forts". His works and others you will find reading about the subject cover fortress design, cannons/artillery, etc.

      > naval tactics 1800 until now?
I suspect most of what you're interested in will be from "the age of sail", i.e.:
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_artillery_in_the_Age_of_Sail
There were huge changes in naval tactics in the period you asked about. First you had the invention of steamships. Then you had ironclads and the Whitehead torpedo in the later half of the 1800's. The Dreadnought battleship in the early 1900s, then came aircraft carriers and radar. Not to mention submarines. Between 1800 and today has been a hugely complex ever-changing situation for naval combat strategy.

      >development of cannons/artillery and naval combat from about, say, 1800
Naval cannoneering goes back quite a bit further than that, it was first succesfully used by the Turks, who also brought firearms generally to Europe
      here's a brief survery https://www.history.navy.mil/research/library/online-reading-room/title-list-alphabetically/e/evolution-of-naval-weapons.html
as for "floating fortresses", read up on the last of the great battleships like the Iowa and Yamato class, and then modern nuclear aircraft carriers, these are all quite literally floating fortresses with thousands of crew and all kinds of weapons and equipment. Battleships died out because of aircraft but even then when you look at what it took to sink the Yamato and what it would take to sink the USS Ford today its kind of insane

Can anyone recommend a good punch set for gunsmithing?

      Anonymous

The Tekton gunsmith bunch set is great. Has a wooden base stand for your workbench, 18pc, including both standard flat punches and roll pin punches. The steel is good quality and they're not crazy expensive. To go with that get a set of brass punches. A cheapo amazon brand is fine for those, they're supposed to be soft anyway. There's a bunch of options on Amazon for like $15-20 for an 8-pc set if you search for "brass punch set".
I don't advise cheapo steel punches, they are more frustration than they are worth.

How much force would it take on a polymer handgun (G17 as an example) to rip the slide off/out of the rails, holding from the locked back slide and pulling upwards? Is it feasible for a grown man to do?

      Burt

Impossible for a human to apply enough force to do that. Maybe if you fixed it in a machine it could tear the rear pin and slip the fire control housing out of the frame but before it got very far it would have to break or dislocate the locking block in front too. The gun would have to be mangled for that to happen

Nogunz board tourist here. Is the ammo crisis the result of controlled supply by ammo manufacturers, like the diamond industry, or is it a more-or-less "organic" shortage?

Not really a crisis anymore, and it was pretty much the natural fallout of everyone getting guns during the coof panic. Most common ammo is back on the shelves and most reloading components have come back besides perhaps large rifle primers but that might be a local thing for me

    >If no
Would it take much effort to develop them (and the necessary support systems)?

tell that to SIG and their rifle/cartridge that just got adopted
also lowering the speed of the propellant to take advantage of an increased barrel length doesn't necessarily mean increasing the pressure to the point it could be considered a proof load

According to my Lyman hand loading manual, the slower burning powders like 4064 are already compressed charges, so while

Proof loading a round to get results is exponentially more detrimental than designing a new round.

is technically correct that 24 inches is longest you get any benefit from, his reasoning is flawed, it's a simple matter of the cartridge case not havong enough volume to hold power and the correlated combustion gases that can expand faster than the volume created by the bore. Going to an 80 ksi chamber pressure doesn't really fix this, because the gas volume is the same, it's just applied more quickly, and by the time it reaches the max volume expansion of a 24" barrel, the resistance of the rifling will also slow the projectile down again as it can't sustain the pressure.

                Anonymous

what if it's only rifled to 24" and then transitions to a tight smoothbore where even the reduced pressure increases velocity

                Anonymous

Not aware of any tests that would indicate if that would or work or not, but it seems harder to manufacture a transition like that than just using a bigger cartridge and cutting a bigger chamber, like for the 224 Valkyrie to begin with.

Not American, but I do not understand the obsession with SBRs /AR "Pistols" (you guys know what the R in AR stands for right?). I often see builds with 10" barrels, shitty stocks, which would barely scrape 2500fps in MV, be difficult and awkward to shoulder, and would breathe fire for a muzzle flash.

They look kinda fun for plinking, but I don't see them as a viable weapon considering in any real conflict you've seriously hindered any useful ability to engage at range.

For a nation so infatuated with guns, you have the most confusing legislation; but why die in the SBR/rifle pistol hill? Take the long barrel pill and dust a b***h with a complete dwell time.

Want to get a 12 gauge for trap shooting with my dad. Used my uncle's and was doing quite well by the time I was through the stage last time. It would also secondarily fill a home defense role but this would not be a necessary focus.

Am I a moron for wanting a Remington 870 because it's super common and ubiquitous?
Is a longer or shorter barrel preferable for trap shooting?
What should I pay for a solid wood stock example, new or used?
Are there any common problems I need to keep a special eye out for that are going to be a show stopper?
If you can answer the above, is there any other 12 gauge I should put on my short list?

Nothing wrong with 870s. You'll want a longer barrel for trap shooting. In fact there are special Trap models. The older ones will be much smoother and have nicer fit and finish compared to new. You should be able to find a really nice one for $600-800 depending on condition, maybe a little more if it's a super nice Winmaster TB but should still be under $1k.
It's also worth looking at Mossberg and the Ithaca model 37.

      mossberg 590 > remington 870

The 590 is a combat shotgun. Anon wants a gun for trap. An 870 or a Mossberg 500 is preferable for that.

Not really. Most 590's you'd find in a gun store have the same trigger assembly as a 500. The 590 has only one barrel option and while its extra thickness is great for combat it has worse balance for shooting clays, meanwhile you can get all sorts of different barrels for a 500 with various lengths, choke configs, even rifled barrels for slugs.

        Anonymous

Thanks. I don't need anything super special as I don't plan to do anything pro/too serious. just fragging some clays. great fun.

So for the 870, older is better in this case really?
Is there a certain year when "everything went to shit" (buyout, factory shutdown/change etc) and year I should avoid buying after if possible or is it just a general trend toward cheapening?

There's a gun and knife show every weekend around here. Not quite ready to buy yet but I might start putting the feelers out.

If you had to pick one of the 3 being discussed which would you go for?

        mossberg 590 > remington 870

What makes it better in your opinion?

          >Thanks. I don't need anything super special
870 or whatever other pump gun is perfect for that. If you said you were serious about trap I'd be pointing you to a break-action gun that would be much more expensive.

          >Is there a certain year when "everything went to shit"
The big hit was in 2007, when Remington went bankrupt and was bought out by Cerebus capital. But there has been a general trend of slacking off on fit-and-finish long before then. Earlier guns will still be nicer, assuming the gun was well taken care of. Guns like that aren't hard to find though they were made by the millions and are in boomer closets everywhere.

            Anonymous

Are the Mossberg and Ithaca preferable/acceptable to buy new or have they also had a decline like Remington? Not sure if I'll do one or the other just nice to know if/when a deal comes up.

So if I find some boomer at a gun show with a mid 90s 870, maybe give that one more consideration than, say, buying one new from basspro or some shit. I'd like to find a solid wood stock, something about solid wood just feels good in the hand and I'd like to pass it down to any family I might end up with when I'm older.

              Anonymous

              >Are the Mossberg and Ithaca preferable/acceptable to buy new
They're fine to buy new, they didn't get bought out by Cerebus like Remington did. There was one change made to the Ithaca 37's though: the older ones, 1970's and before, will slamfire. The later ones won't. I mention this mainly for academic purposes as slamfiring is kinda useless, especially for shooting trap, but it's a thing.
Finding old Remingtons isn't hard though, there's probably a couple hundred on Gunbroker right now. I'd say if you get a chance to hit a gun show try and fingerfrick a few different ones to see what you prefer, then you can always search online to see if the gun show prices are any good.

I'm in the market for a single shot break action shotgun (preferably in 12 gauge), anything in particular I should look for? Or more importantly, anything I should avoid?

      Anonymous

It's hard to give advice on single shots without knowing what your motivation for buying one is. You've basically got 3 options:
You've got older cheapo guns, these make sense if you are on a super tight budget or you just want a cheap plinker. Be careful to check the chamber length as some will be for obsolete 2.5" shells. Also note that many will not be safe for steel shot, which may or may not matter to you. Some of these are very good value for money, others are your grandpa's shotgun equivalent of a hi-point.
Then you've got well made modern examples like NEF and H&R. These are good guns but they cost as much or more than a good pump gun making their purchase hard to justify, but if you want to play around with meme rounds this is probably your best choice.
And finally you've got specialty models for Singles Trap. The lower end ones tend to be turkshit, the more expensive ones are super nice, same as high-end double guns. And as with them the sky is the limit when it comes to price.

I have no experience with rifles, only pistols. I'd like an ar15, and I'm trying to decide between a 100% home build, buying a complete upper + lower, or just flat out buying a Daniel Defense DDM4v7. What do you all think?

If I do complete upper and lower, would these two be acceptable?

Thanks man! What BCM would be comparable to a DDM4v7? BCM Recce-16 MCMR? From what I'm seeing right now, that's the same price as the DDM4v7. They're both going for about $1500.

          Anonymous

Don't get the whole gun. The only parts where quality matters are, from most important to least, bolt, barrel, handguard, trigger. 3 of these 4 are in the upper assembly already. Go with whatever BCM upper you think best suits you, they are all quality choices. Afterwards get a Larue MBT2S trigger and whatever lower you want. You can go as cheap as Anderson if you don't mind potentially having play between the upper and lower. The lower and every other part like charging handle, forward assist, lpk, can be basic milspec and you won't have a problem in the long run.

Does cylinder length translate into more muzzle velocity? Since the gas is all coming out the cylinder then wouldn't firing .22 lr out of a .22 lr cylinder elongated to fit a .22 magnum frame gun translate into an extra third or more of an inch of barrel length? Just been looking at them naa mini revolvers and it had me thinking. If I bit the bullet I'd probably just go for the cheaper 2" .22 lr only option. I wouldn't consider it for a normal carry gun but a IWB ppk/s is just annoying enough that I might want something smaller and I don't have a .22 anyways.

Also, is the whole 2000 fps threshold for stopping power really that meaningful? .300 blk is getting pretty commonly offered in AR pistols and it seems to beat .223 pretty handily in muzzle energy but is still ~500 fps slower though lighter .300 loads will still be above 2000 fps. .300 blk just doesn't seem too desirable because of the increased recoil and, what, 50% increase in ammo costs?

      Anonymous

No. There is some loss of pressure through the cylinder gap, but it's far from "all". Meanwhile it creates another problem: the bullet has to travel farther before it hits the forcing cone. This harms accuracy.

      >2000fps threshold
That's not "stopping power", that's "hydrostatic shock". Not the same thing.
The whole point of .300 blk is it's any easy conversion for an AR that supresses well with subsonics. If you're not shooting subs with a can most of the time it's pointless.

No, they don't make those. Flip mounts aren't perfectly solid, they have a little play in them because of the flip mechanism. Some are better than others but they're never perfect. That slop is acceptable for short range use but they're totally inappropriate for long range precision shooting. A solid mount is super important for long range shooting, a flip mount is the last thing you'd want.

Is it safe to dry fire modern rimfire firearms or will it hurt the firing pin?

      Anonymous

The risk isn't to the firing pin, it's to the chamber which the firing pin could hit without a cartridge to stop it. RTFM, this varies a lot from gun to gun.

        Anonymous

Surely the breech face/chamber area would be pretty strong to contain the pressure from the cartridge? I know .22LR isn’t exactly high pressure but still

          Anonymous

Strong? Yes. Hard? Not as hard as the firing pin.

The risk is breaking the firing pin of older rimfires by smashing it into the chamber wall without some nice soft brass to stop it. The chamber walls will be fine.

The firing pin rarely breaks. The edge of the chamber usually gets damaged. It's not the chamber wall that's the problem, it's right where the rim would fit. This problem is so common there are dedicated tools for fixing it.
