Post WW3 Comms

Radio will be the back bone of news and information after the bombs fall.

Who here part of the Ham radio master race?
Whats your setup?
What antenna would you run in a tight space for a multiband 80m to 10m frequencies? (horizontal run impossible, no tall trees either)

What the frick is that thing?
A radio, sure, but it looks autistic as frick
Why is there two of them? Couldn't they just get one radio that does 2x the work of the one model they chose?
Why's it got a separate baseplate instead of just making the bottom of the main cube have feet

Western brands love to OBEY THE FCC LAWS.
The chinks dont care. So you end up with a radio that can be unlocked to do a LOT MORE than even an expensive western brand.

Chinese radios are great until you get further into it and check out your spurious emissions. Baofeng need to update their marketing, no need to tune with our radios, Baofeng transmits on all the bands at once.

its worth the extra cash up front to get a decent radio. ive got 2 20 year old yeasu handies still running quite happily on their original battery. they are also unlocked and will transmit on any freq they can hear, though obviously it needs the right antenna to avoid fricking the things up

It can even unlock cars, play pong, send sstv messages, a spectrum analyzer

they're usually just for use with a scanner. very basic antenna and not really all that good overall.

        https://i.imgur.com/QBwDbX1.jpg

With the portable HF radios, some are running on as little as 20 watts.
Your base station only uses 100 watts transmitting. idle watts would be 10 watts.

So with something like a 'Jackery' or 'Ecoflow delta' battery you could power it for a week without recharging. and be super easy to deploy some folding solar panels to recharge

        >With the portable HF radios, some are running on as little as 20 watts.
QRP sets generally put 5w out and you can talk to the world with that on the right band and antenna. Yeasu do the best radios in the this category.

        just purchased 4ham.org and hfchan.org

My thinking, basically make it an anonymous message board that can only be posted to over HF, but still viewable online. be a great place for people to drop news etc.

If I was still single without kids I'd do it but I've got no free time atm, there's a lot of design considerations with regards to the slow data rate of ham radio and the fact it would most likely be decentralized. It's doable in some shape or form but it needs a lot of considerate planning if it's not to be a steaming pile of shit.

If you're not getting sound then try another browser or follow the instructions at the top, otherwise click 80m on the band and click about on the waterfall until you find something. Then play around and learn the settings, it's basically a digital radio attached to an antenna and you can use it like you were sat there yourself.

I made a jpole for 2m/144mhz out of a piece of twin lead. Works just fine for local/repeater use. I also have a 20M vertical which is just vertical copper pipe in sections fitted together. Radial field of about 32 radials made out of scrap copper wire scrounged for free. Worked all continents with it except Antartica. People will probably have to put some money into a transceiver, but you can make very useful antennas quite inexpensively.

I fail to see how that if internet goes out that the electricity won't go out as well. You won't have electricity for your fancy radio, putting up a solar panels and giving smoke signals from your gasifier will make you a target.

Most likely in the event of emergency, you will be needed on the front lines. If you cower into your bunker, then you will either need to build a community, or be killed by the chaotic roaming mobs.

With all the migrants there will most likely be well organized Muslim militias, chinese communist soldiers, and other terrorist sleeper cells waiting to raid major cities and take over food and production. They will be on the radios too, monitoring what you say and giving you propaganda.

this looks good, if <$500 is in your budget. Especially good because it supports external antennas. 1.711Mhz to 30Mhz, AM FM commercial radio, Aircraft Band 117-137Mhz

This thing is dirt cheap $55, but no external antenna, Only 4.75Mhz to 21.85Mhz (so missing 10m and CB radio bands), AM FM commercial radio, Airband

        I recommend the boomer training:

Should you decide to do a PrepHole over the radio (legal or not). HF is for long distance. If it ever takes off, be sure to switch to VHF or UHF.

Checked. Whatever you pick make sure it has SSB and AM and it's probably a good one.

I turned it on once by mistake without setting frequency so at 2 am in the morning it started emmiting static sound and I stood up sleepwalked to the closet and pissed inside, then I fully woke up. Nothing even remotely similar happened to me ever before.

      https://g3xbm-qrp.blogspot.com/2024/03/630m-qrp-wspr-overnight_31.html

Very low frequency (VLF) enthusiast Joe Craig, VO1NA, reports that Stefan Schaefer, DK7FC, copied his 50-character message transmitted from Newfoundland on 8.271 kHz, with a radiated power of 10 mW.

“This is a new record for amateur transatlantic VLF,” Craig told ARRL. “The mode used was EbNaut by Paul Nicholson. EbNaut is a synchronous coherent BPSK mode for use at VLF and low LF. Craig’s tower supports a VLF RL (rotated L) 10-meter (33 feet) average height and 100 meters (328 feet) long. VLF is the ITU designation for radio spectrum in the range of 3 – 30 kHz, corresponding to wavelengths from 100 to 10 kilometers, respectively.

“Since VLF waves can penetrate at least 40 meters (131 feet) into saltwater, they are used for military communication with submarines,” Craig noted.
