That doesn't solve the much larger navigation issue anon, and it introduces the problem that you're now constantly burning through batteries without the logistical backing that soldier who normally use that gear have. Consider that thermal monoculars are quite power hungry and will burn through CR123s at the rate of one every 45-90 minutes assuming you aren't using a monocular with a non swappable internal battery. That's a lot of batteries that you won't reliably be able to replace or messing with power banks that who knows when you'll have another chance to recharge to hook your monocular up to.
a thermal scope can last around 8 hours. Also you can charge the batteries during the day or get a water turbine to charge them when you place it in a stream with a current.

Sticking to roads/landmarks with the assistance of a compass and notebook is helpful too. Essentially try and get as many days worth of food as I can in a building to building arrangement then take it stupid easy during the intervening days only venturing out to check for signs of disturbance around my area. once I have like 1-2 days worth of food left I try again and see just how fricked I am after 7 days.
