I was looking to buy a couple "pirate chests" for my sons for their collections i have started for them for when theyre older. I found these ones on etsy i really like but the guy selling them is in ukraine and hasnt responded to any of my messages for several weeks, hes presumed dead. I really like the looks of his chests. Way more than anything else ive found online. But i guess i will have to look into making them myself. Anyone have some good plans for a pirate style chest similar to these? Also how to achieve the chunky, high gloss finish?
looks like wood molding glued onto a israeliteelry box, detailed with a chainsaw, and alot of high gloss varnish
The accentuated color contrast in the woodgrain was do e with a torch and the rustic aged look of the molding is a combination of heavier torching and then wire brushing the charred parts off to soften the edges and simulate decades of erosion.
The box itself looks like common fir/pine/ hemlock with distinctive hatd/ soft grain variation and the trim looks more like a softer wood with a tighter more homogenous grain...cedar, cypress or mahogany would work and are the kinds of wood that a sea chest of that type would have been made of.
Google is your friend, plenty of hits for "pirate treasure box plans", a lot of which seem pretty straightforward. That and should at least get you in the ballpark. I thought there was a woodworking general here but I can't it. Find a plan you like, source some unshivered timbers and maybe post another thread (unless this one is still up), peeps will help if you can tell them which way you want to take it.
> projecting this hard
And how the shit is someone with no previous experience going to do it themselves without some sort of guidance you dense motherfricker? You need to go back.
why do people keep asking for "plans" for really stupid and pointless things here? I though this was PrepHole also it doesn't matter, you won't do it.
>why do people keep asking for "plans" for really stupid and pointless things here?
Why would you go onto a PrepHole forum and ask for help on PrepHoleing something?
That sure is a hard one to figure out there anon.

yes why.../diy/
Do It Yourself.
Not Do It For Me.
A lot of craft stores, like Michaels, hobby lobby, and even decor stores like Ross or World a Market have treasure chest like things.
Even a Home Depot sells one
Yeah, none of those look very good or authentic tho. They already have pretty good silver collections i have going for them, plus little knick knacks and whatnot they wont get til theyre older. I want the chest to look good and last that long.
Based anon. Thanks for the direction. It sucks that i already have my eyes full of the example from the OP.. i doubt ill be able to come anywhere close to recreating its look or (appeared) sturdiness.
Authentic probably wouldn't look like the original post. Lets be honest. Wooden chests and hard framed leather chests were a thing back then. Torching the wood and layering on the varnish looks like something you would find in a pirate themed restaurant or a theme park store. But you do you.
>i doubt ill be able to come anywhere close to recreating its look or (appeared) sturdiness.
You kids will only remember the cool projects they did with dad. The rest is in your head.
Also, it occurred to me while I was taking a shit earlier, you should keep your eyes out around construction sites if you have any nearby for steel pallet wrap tape like pic related. It is basically thin spring steel; I use it to make leaf springs for robotics projects, but it's piss easy to bend, form and drill to replicate the metal strapping around chests. Usually used to strap bricks and pavers to pallets, which should give you a hint on where to check. Much easier to work than the thicker steel strips you might find at $big_box_store.
> I posted it again XDDDD
Frick off and be an unhelpful c**t elsewhere.
>not good or authentic
Likes and posts an absolute piece of shit example
Just follow any hope chest/jewelry box tutorials and put homosexual pirate garbage on the outside
Its not hard.
> Also how to achieve the chunky, high gloss finish
PU coat but instead of thin layers with sanding in between, just apply the first 2 or 3 layers crazy thick with a brush, then sand 320 very lightly before applying a thin finishing layer to get the high gloss finish. 0.5mm of PU coat will last pretty much forever
It's a long shot, but when my daughter wanted a treasure chest toybox I just went to a few local garage sales and sure enough I was able to score a 1920's ish guilded trunk that some immigrants presumably used to enter the country after WW1. Sanded it and painted it...total cost was like $12
Looks like shit. The gains on the wood a very coarse so it's clearly pine.
Look for a camphor chest.
I make pirate chests like that. Inbox me OP.
