Papuan rebels attacked Indonesian position in Nduga, 6 dead, 9 POWs, 20 MIA

> A lot of them are allegedly from Indonesian premier special forces Kopassus and Indonesian Strategic Reserves according to some sources. The West Papuan National Liberation Army spokesman Sebby Sambom commented on the incident "We've received confirmation from our field commander that they've killed 9 men". He further affirm that the previously held Susi Air Pilot from New Zealand would only be released through peaceful negotiation, though it isn't clear if the incident is related to Indonesian military effort to liberate the hostage. Previously another Indonesian soldier has been KIA during the search due to falling of a ravine.

Indog here, can't believe this catastrophe happened. Implies either bad training, discipline, or lack of ISR for this shitshow to happen. And here I am thinking about joining the reserves.

Nah, Indons are still in their "non-aligned movement" phase from the Cold War. They have a national neurosis about foreign influence on their shores, so their tendency is to go full insular and autarkic. But yeah, otherwise, they're not gonna be reliable allies in any shooting war. They're like the India of SEA in that respect, but without a real bone to pick with China.

            >Nah, Indons are still in their "non-aligned movement" phase from the Cold War. They have a national neurosis about foreign influence on their shores
Malaysia, Brunei and even Singapore recognize Kosovo.
Indonesians go out of their way not to recognize Kosovo.

Indonesia and Malaysia went out of their way to criticize the AUKUS submarine deal.
            > https://channelnewsasia.com/commentary/aukus-australia-nuclear-asean-china-south-sea-tension-2191776
Mind you, it doesn't matter whether the submarine is diesel powered or nuclear powered. A nuclear sub doesn't necessarily carry nuclear weapons and alternatively a diesel sub can also carry nuclear weapons. So the statements weren't based on real security concern and was purely political and meant to enamor China.

            >so their tendency is to go full insular and autarkic.
Indonesia produces nothing in terms of defense, but buys everyone from other countries. They also like to claim credit for shit they didn't create, like the Kaplan medium tank (Turkey) and the KF-21 fighter jet (South Korea). They are the furthest thing from autarkic.

            >They're like the India of SEA in that respect, but without a real bone to pick with China.

              >Indonesians go out of their way not to recognize Kosovo.
How does this refute my argument? A lot of countries don't recognize Kosovo for geopolitical reasons, especially countries like Indonesia which have actual secessionist movements going on, simply because recognition would imply some kind of legitimacy to unilateral declarations of sovereignty. That's why Spain doesn't recognize Kosovo either despite being in NATO and the EU.
              >Indonesia and Malaysia went out of their way to criticize the AUKUS submarine deal.
For Malaysia, there's definitely an element of wanting to be on the Chinese good side, and yeah, Indonesia is the same to a degree. But in general Indonesia views SEA as its backyard and wants to turn the region into a big neutral zone. That's why they've been trying so hard to turn Jakarta into the Brussels of SEA.
              >Indonesia produces nothing in terms of defense, but buys everyone from other countries.
The Indons have to rely on foreign purchases like pretty much every non-major military, but in the first place, they force foreign partners into joint ventures because they want that domestic capability for themselves. But if you look at their trade policy outside the military, it's a sea of export bans, non-tariff barriers and foreign equity restrictions. Economic nationalism and autarky is a very strong idea in Indonesia compared to the rest of SEA.
              >All of Maritime Southeast Asia has territorial disputes with China.
Yeah, but China's 9-dash line over the Natuna islands is really a nothingburger compared to the Spratlys or Paracels, let alone India's long, if inhospitable border with China. To India, China is a powerful and ever-present enemy. To the Indonesians, China's saber-rattling is annoying, but they're still more than happy to sell all their nickel to them.

    https://en.tempo.co/read/1716228/tni-denies-9-soldiers-killed-by-armed-group-in-nduga-papua

The Indonesian National Army (TNI) denied claims by an armed criminal group that they had killed nine TNI soldiers during an attack in Nduga, Papua on Saturday, April 15, 2023. Head of the TNI Information Center Rear Admiral Julius Widjojono said that soldiers who had been separated because of the attack had begun to be able to regroup with their units.

"The current development is very positive, the troops have started to gather," Julius said via text message on Monday, April 17, 2023.

Julius said that the TNI continues to maintain communication with field personnel to gather information about the development of the situation. Julius said that the TNI is still recording the number of personnel who managed to regroup with their units.

The Raider Infantry Battalion 321/Galuh Taruna was attacked by an armed group in Nduga on Saturday, April 15, 2023. The team was approaching the location where Susi Air pilot Philip Mark Marthens had been taken hostage by the armed groups on February 7 this year.

The TNI said that it lost one of its soldiers, First Private Miftahul Arifin, who took a shot and fell 15 meters into a ravine.

Meanwhile, the West Papua National Liberation Army-Free Papua Organization (TPNPB-OPM) claimed they shot dead nine TNI members during the attack. The TPNPB-OPM spokesman Sebby Sambom also claimed that they had stolen nine weapons from the TNI.

Julius said that Sebby's claim was a lie and asked the public not to believe it. Julius said that the Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, Admiral Yudo Margono, is currently visiting Papua to meet face-to-face with troops and they will hold a press conference.

The island was divided in colonial times, the Germans had the East and the Dutch had the West. When the Dutch withdrew from Indonesia they set Papua up to be independent from the rest of Indonesia because of it is distinctly different from the Muslim and Javanese dominated Indonesia.
Before colonial times there was no governance higher than local tribes
But they're the same people, the same language, the same culture. So they'd naturally have close relations.

            >The Phantom
Damn, I haven't seen that character in the funny papers since the 90s.

It is very common in PNG

            >And here I am thinking about joining the reserves.

Join the Air Force and work on or fly stuff, C-model F-16s recommended. Being a bullet sponge in Asia is always unwise while air forces and navies tend less expendable with vastly better living conditions.

Papuans move easily in jungle and gave Japs hell in WWII. They rescued Allied aircrews often such that the 80 FS "Juvat" fighter squadron at Kunsan carries their name to this day.

What benefit does the Indonesian public get out of ruling them? Any resources worth killing for (not that there's anything wrong with that)?

There is a literal mountain of Gold and Copper in West Papua worth tens of billions of dollars.
The Indonesian people and West Papuan people do not get any of this of course.

The orangutan prostitute labor camps are in West Papua, arent they?

Borneo, and those are lumber camps

Based, God willing West Papua will be free one day (hopefully soon). It will probably be a shithole but at least they will be free from indo-oppression.

    >According to Peter Dunns book Timor: A People Betrayed in the first ~two years of Indonesias occupation of East Timor they may have lost as many as 5,000 troops to the Timorese resistance movements insurgency
    >Units were having to be rotated out after just a few months due to low morale, commanders were making deals with local cells to not go on patrol in exchange for not being attacked
With the situation spiraling out of control like that the Indonesians probably would have become amendable to a negotiated withdrawal if the West had politely and firmly suggested it
Instead the Great Humanitarian Jimmy Carter authorized a new arms package that included OV-10 Broncos and napalm to strike the mountainous interior of Timor where rebels had made their bases and many refugees had fled

It's never not funny to see a country whose entire military history is born out of guerilla warfare getting BTFOd by guerillas
