The wife answered the door armed right after and only survived by the skin of her teeth after she got in a gun fight with officers.

Never answer the door for police. That goes double when it's late at night. The only reason cops serve warrants late at night is because you've been characterised as dangerous to the judge who signed off on your warrant. At that point you're just fricked

      thats kind of dumb
the types of people who shoot in uniform police who identify themselves are statistically wide awake at night

Seems like the home owner's fault, why would you answer the door with a gun when the officer announced it was law enforcement knocking on the door.

Just making sure I'm not mistaking your point. If you answer the door with a gun in your hand, police have a green light to shoot you. I'm not discussing the prudence of either party here, just the legal requirements on you being seen by LE with a firearm.

No the Ruby Ridge shootout pretty much proved they can't but that's never stopped them from using the fear excuse and saying the felt like they were in danger.
I've seen cops kill people while just doing wellness checks because the occupant said told them to go away but he had a gun. Red flag laws have killed tons of people for this reason.

This is what's fricked up though. New Mexico even has open carry. Police should exercise more restraint on who they light up. Merely possessing a gun should not be a death sentence, especially in your own home.

Bro, it’s not even the same. No doubt the cops messed up by giving the wrong address, but don’t acting like some dude bearing his gun in his hand after police have announced themselves multiple times is the same as Joe Blow walking down the street with his gun in a holster.

thats because they have dealt with too many crackheads that legit hear "police" and started shooting through the door, opening it and shooting, etc.
every time some crackhead jogger does this cops show the footage to as many cops as possible and try to figure out some autistic over the top way to avoid that happening again.
Which is how innocent fricks get shot for nothing.
Which leads to crackhead joggers getting more paranoid and suiciding by cop even more.

It’s really this simple. Cops are gonnna assume an unknown individual with a gun visibly in hand is a threat to their lives. If they stall for even a second to check if they are friendly they could be dead. Like, they even announced they were police. Wtf was the moron with the gun expecting?

      >law enforcement open up
      >open door without gun
      >get robbed

      >open door with gun visible in hand
      >robber either shoots you or takes your gun.
Stupid move to not yell from the other side of the door or to look from a window to confirm. Double stupid to open a door with your gun showing to who ever is on the other side.

Just making sure I'm not mistaking your point. If you answer the door with a gun in your hand, police have a green light to shoot you. I'm not discussing the prudence of either party here, just the legal requirements on you being seen by LE with a firearm.

Good job ignoring all the context moron. But given the situation the cops had done things right by announcing themselves, and what could of been a harmless misunderstanding solved by a drivers license check turned fatal because a dude grab his gun and decided to confront the cops with it. The cops were in the mindset they were going to talk to a combative individual, so some dude coming out with a gun even after they’ve said they’re police multiple times doesn’t ease their minds.

        >what could of been a harmless misunderstanding solved by a drivers license check
"Hi, this is the police, I know it's the middle of the night and we just woke you up, but all of your rights are suspended until you prove to us who you are. No, we don't have a warrant."

        >The cops were in the mindset they were going to talk to a combative individual
How the frick could the SLEEPING homeowner possibly know this? He's been awake for all of 20 seconds, he wasn't listening to the police radio, he doesn't know there's a domestic dispute 3 doors down, he's SLEEPING. He died not knowing what the frick was happening.

He is not responsible for the officer's frame-of-mind. Not one bit. In fact the officers are largely responsible for the homeowner's frame-of-mind, since they're the ones whose actions induced it.

even though it's legal, people are fricking moronic, only draw your gun if you know 100% you are in danger (and get a peephole or something)

I don't open the door. There's a camera on the front gate and another one on the front door if they somehow made it over the garden wall without cutting themselves. I'll buzz them in if they have a warrant, otherwise I'm phoning my lawyer.

This is why American gun culture is dumb, why would you bring a gun to the store unless you were planning to shoot them? You should go through an IQ test first before being able to buy a gun

    >Do you answer the door with a gun, or at all?
You turn on exterior lights, grab a gun, and observe who is outside without being observed yourself.

Let's say it wasn't the cops, it was impersonators or just dudes trying to get someone to the door; what POSSIBLE FRICKING GOOD is a gun in your hand when you open your choke-point door to the wide-open outdoors? If the people outside are waiting to bumrush you, you're possibly fricked. If they're armed, you're fully fricked. In both scenarios you're at a major disadvantage, and it's completely avoidable.

There is absolutely no sound reason to open your door, in the middle of the night, armed, unless you absolutely know for certain what is on the other side, and it's necessary to go outside, and you're prepared for it.

And if what's on the other side requires a gun, and you don't need to be outside, you should be shooting at it from inside your defensible position rather than serving yourself up on a platter.
