seeing as it appears to be powered by sufficiently sized batteries, a nichrome wire is plenty enough to ignite home made & standard powders
its the same thing as a pipebomb, but made to go in a singular direction

I know nothing about this sort of thing, but why have a battery at all? Why not a piezoelectric switch? Like a potato gun

He couldn't test it beforehand so I guess he went with an overpowered igniter to make sure it would fire.

He tested it several times before the assassination

Dunno, you'd have to ask the guy who built it. He may not have been aware of piezo or he may have found it easier to use batteries. But sure, he could have done that.
Personally I think it would be easier to get the battery system to work because you don't have to worry about a spark. A model rocket igniter or a piece of nichrome wire scavenged from a heater or hair dryer would be very reliable, it's much "hotter" and not as brief as a spark and it can't short out like a spark gap can.

The shorting risk doesn't exist for a potato gun because the fuel is a gas rather than electrically conductive grains of actual powder. The ability of the piezo to work repeatedly is nice for the potato gun but it's pointless for a weapon you're going to use exactly once.

He also could have used a mechanical igniter, like the striker used in gas lanterns. That's what old-timers used in potato guns before piezo became as common as it is now, but that also has its drawbacks. Honestly tons of things would work, he probably just did what was most familiar to him.

        >he probably just did what was most familiar to him
Internet minmaxers have a bad habit of skipping over this as a reason people do things the way they do.

I doubt a spark that lasts a couple of milliseconds would set it off, better to have a heating element that gets hot enough to insure ignition.

When they think you're crude, go technical. When they think you're technical, go crude. These days, though, you have to get technical before you can even aspire to crudeness.

I would love to see and hear this thing be tested, spitting a bukkake of ball bearings and smoke with no recognizable pattern, or just fricking detonating. Either way it would be fricking cool.

sure, but why would we think one end of the pipe is open? dude probably capped the ends just like in the one he actually used.

South Korean cults are fricking insane, some neo-shamanism and traditional confucian ones make for some interesting reading that makes you question if Asians really live in the same reality as the rest of us.

Start reading about the "Unification Church", it's not as extreme as many but it's weird, and it's by far the biggest of its kind.

what is it with Asians and crazy Christian cults? worst Korea had a whole scandal recently that featured one too.

It's not just Asians, read about the stuff in South America, the Caribbean, and Africa too. In many places in the world missionaries spread Christianity but it ended up mingling with local beliefs. For example, Santeria, many kinds of Voudou, etc.

Yeah. I remember there was some Jonestown-tier suicide cult in Kenya just last year.

Abe wasn't part of the cult, the shooter just took his anger out on an easier target compared to actual high cult members.

what is it with Asians and crazy Christian cults? worst Korea had a whole scandal recently that featured one too.

It's the lack of a real distinct culture. Korea is one of the most lost depressing places on earth, wealth is worshiped as a god so its not surprising that cults worshiping money are so prevalent.

time and resource? that thing could be cobbled together in half a day.
being angry enough to commit murder seems like the bigger obstacle.

Not that angry when you have nothing to lose. How do people not realize this when so many events like this have happened? In his case, he had no friends, ruined family, life-long trauma from cultist parents, etc. His entire life is ruled by the cult's presence. It's the same feeling that drives incels to go to the gym, get hench, and get laid. They have nothing, there's literally no other choice and no point to doing anything else.

Angry enough that he decided to actually plan it out of sheer fricking will. Based on the dude's background and motive, this stuff was years in the making.
