For me it was rib shaped pork patty. The main was basically just a McRib, but I liked it because it came with peanutbutter, jelly, and tortillas and was fun to make pj's on them.

Its bogus. The only time people get in trouble is because soldiers acquire or steal boxes of MREs from their units and try to sell them for profit. Basically the same as stealing from your employer.
Otherwise it doesnt matter, there are surplus stores with pallets of MREs stacked to the ceiling and you can purchase them from my local commissary.

MREs are basically just prison food in vacuum sealed bags, and I can't see there being any more assrape than in the Army or Navy. You're told when to shit, shower, sleep, and report for duties.

To the enlisted man, prison is laughable and you are a clown with dick nipples.

            >MREs are basically just prison food in vacuum sealed bags

Yeah no, dfac or kids cafeteria food is closer to prison food than MREs, prison food's main quality is how cheap it can be acquired in quantity, MREs main quality is being super high calorically dense while having a high shelf life, they're unironically too expensive for Prisons to use

you have zero fricking clue how actually bad prison food is

            https://i.imgur.com/7ApSSHM.jpg

It's wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The tabasco sauce definitely helped quite a lot.

in my experience most such packaged ready-to-eat pasta meals, even commercial, are generally underseasoned
I guess the idea is that you can add seasoning to taste

            Anonymous

No. MRE's are closer to astronaut food if anything. Meant to be stored for ever and as calorically dense as possible per gram. Still very often not good.

Nonsense, prison food has nothing in common with MREs or even T-rats.
Prison food would be unsustainably expensive if it were MREs which have zero advantages vs. the cheap shit contractors supply to the prison system.

How good is pemmican when made with other types of meat or pork? Ever since playing Rimworld I can't help but think it might just be the ultimate survival food, I might even make some for myself just to practice the preparation process.

          Anonymous

I've fricked around with a lot of deer and hog pemmican because I have hunters who use my property and pay me in meat.
Honestly you can barely tell the difference between deer and beef in that state, hog has a slightly different texture flavor but it's subtle. The seasonings you use have more of an effect honestly.

            >If you could do it over again, what would you have done to make it more palatable? I guess the question defeats the purpose of the pemmican though.
Exactly, to a big degree it just is what it is. Famously the Corps of Discovery ate hundreds if not thousands of pounds of the shit and fur trappers and plains indians lived off it for months sometimes.

I used beef tallow and brisket, rendered the fat and cut and dried the meat myself, and mixed dried huckleberries into it which supposedly was done to make it more palatble raw, which it definitely did, but the shit is still pretty damn rough. It's better if you fry it up with veggies or throw it in a stew (and a lot of historical evidence suggests this is actually the preferred way to eat the stuff) but 10hr work days in the mountains covering miles don't leave much time for that lol, and again I literally just brought pemmican because I was on some Young Man Shit™ at the time.

Intredasting, sounds like the Metis had it on lock with their bison pemmican way back then, highly based. I was also looking at some other alternative recipes from this website:
Their peanut butter pemmican recipe sounds fricking tasty, although I'm sure it won't last nearly as long. It's probably good for a few weeks and maybe even a month or two innawoods.

          Anonymous

          >How good is pemmican
It's not lol. But it'll keep you going.

I work innawilderness and when I was younger and dumber decided to do a full 2-week hitch living off pemmican I had made. By day 2 I was fricking choking it down.

          But it keeps you going.

Holy shit dude, that's fricked lol. If you could do it over again, what would you have done to make it more palatable? I guess the question defeats the purpose of the pemmican though. If it was made to be really tasty, then it wouldn't be a good survival food because it wouldn't preserve as long, and would be getting eaten all the time lmao.

When I tried onez it felt like there wasn't enough substance. I understand that the nutrients are all accounted for, but the melains are small and the rest is basically candy. To be fair, I am an Eastern Euro, so I may be biased, but the Ukrainian 24 hour MREs with a decent amount of grandma's soup or porridge for every meal are the closest to what I had imagined an MRE to be like

      Anonymous

      >with a decent amount of grandma's soup or porridge for every meal
they're very nice to eat but heavy in weight
the Anglo nations quickly discovered that candy bars are the most calorie dense you can get, and infantry - who, let's face it, are mostly about 20 years old - will scarf that sort of thing no problem
also, candy bars are very easy to eat when you're absolutely exhausted and sitting in a cold muddy foxhole under a poncho and it's bucketing overhead and you just want to throw something down your neck and sleep
under such circumstances the army isn't interested in nutrition, it's interested in calories. MREs have a lot of empty calories because. the army has proper kitchens and caterers for proper food

        Anonymous

        This right here.
Remember that A-ration (actual food made by cooks in a kitchen, served in a mess hall or equivalent) is ALWAYS the preferred method of feeding people. It's cheapest, most nutritious, and usually most palatable way to feed your men.
Hell, even B-rations (cooked from tin cans and other preservatives, but still in a field kitchen by a dedicated guy who cooks them) are the second-best option.

MRE's are for situation where you don't have a kitchen available. And should never be eaten for more than a week or so. Get those men some proper food!
You should seriously think just getting loads of tin cans and allocating time for cooking, if you at all have chance for it, or if you spend any longer time in one place. MRE's are neat and light-weight option if you are on the move, but otherwise get real food.

Fair enough. Didn't consider the weight of water in those items and also, to be fair, the longest I've had to subsist on MREs has been two days

          >MRE's are for situation where you don't have a kitchen available. And should never be eaten for more than a week or so. Get those men some proper food!

Why so sensitive? I and the rest of my squadron and many others ate MREs for months with no quibbles. They were far more convenient than driving to the DFAC from the Al Dhafra flightline (Desert Shield/Storm, before MREs were actually tasty). We packed the flightline crew vans with them for convenient snackage.

I must conclude most G.I.s are b***hbois with respect to food. Food is fuel, that's all. Chow goes in, turds come out (unless the TCN makes koolaid using non-potable water then the base gets explosive shits, those wise enough to only drink Coke and bottled water excepted), mission goes on. If you aren't hungry, don't eat. If you are hungry, you WILL eat.

to be fair to the Americans, their equivalent of "babushka's cooking" is in fact beans, cornbread, pies, casseroles, and roast beef or chicken. soup is less common there, my personal theory is that this is because they were strongly influenced by modern (post-Renaissance) cooking styles, whereas European soup dates back to medieval times. they do have thick soups or stews like seafood chowder and beef stew, and those are on some MRE menus, you probably ate something else. but I notice that US MRE versions of chowder and stew are much thicker than you'd expect commercially; again, less liquid, less weight

MREs also have a lot of American-Hispanic menus like tacos... and remember, they do try to suit the menus to reflect what the troops want

    For Standard current ones-
    1. Chili mac
    2. Pork Sausage breakfast
    3. Beef Ravioli
Also, I remember people b***hing a lot about spinach fettuccini but its actually fricking good man. Cranraz strike, honey mustard pretzels, and you get to put hot peppers in the pasta.

Why are people inflicting MREs onto themselves when not in a restrictive environment? Did they learn to love the pain while inna sandbox?

Anons take better care of yourself. Also at $20 a bag thats like 4 or 5 spam cans.

For me, it was the Country Captain Chicken -- now discontinued due to most other troops hating it, but I fricking loved it. Why? Well, for one thing, you get a whole spread, plus *all* of the extras -- I'm talkin' mashed potatoes & gravy, a biscuit thing, COCA POWDER, I'm talkin' AWL DA TANGS -- and I want to commission an entire run of Country Captain Chicken MREs for my personal enjoyment.

How excited are we about the fact that based Chinks are developing more and more MREs to prepare for a war where they can’t have their soup kitchens alongside the troops?

Depends entirely on the company. The issue is that MREs don't last as long (officially).

I finished off a couple boxes of MREs recently and I gotta say they're pretty bad. Too much sugar and water and not enough protein and fat. It's like they're made for little kids instead of grown men.
