Weird, you have to launch in a wicked curve to get a full run at the ramp.

This is the one that's literally just a cargo ship they're slapping a flight deck onto, right?

      Yup

that platform doesn't look very secure. shouldn't the majority of the ship be under the flight deck?

I can only assume they're going for an angled flight deck but have to work around the existing tanker superstructure. as far as anyone knows they only plan to launch drones so the deck probably doesn't need more than what you see.

This thing is never going to do any aggresive turns that might compromise the stability of the structure, so it probably doesn't cost much to do it as wide as possible for ease of landing.

It's just that easy in shipbuilding.

      Anonymous

To be honest with you the idea of converting a cargo ship into a relatively cheap sea mobile drone and helicopter launch platform seems sound enough on a theoretical level, I'm just not sure how the intend to keep it protected given its size and value as a target.
Maybe its just never supposed to leave the range of ground based fighter craft and/or air defences
I could even see the US getting use out of a similar (though presumably smaller and more efficient) design to rapidly increase things like wingman drone carrying capacity for its CSGs in the event of a sudden outbreak of hostilities

        Anonymous

The cost of any substantial airwing being on the ship means it's worth investing the money to protect it properly, which means proper shipbuilding instead of taking a lowest cost cargo ship and loading her up.

It's way too vulnerable. Drones can't protect against air attack and Iranians lack the proper escorts or aircraft to protect it from a concentrated air attack from the likes of Israel/US. In the first minutes of a hot war this thing is at the bottom of the sea.

It's also going to be tracked 24/7, so its usefulness in drone strikes is questionable

Overall it just is a propaganda/prestige thing

Nothing new to this, brits did ocean liners conversion in the 1910s. I guess Iran is at 1910s levels, good for them, I guess. Thirdies still have quite a bit of catch up to do.

Here's one that actually IS a converted cargo ship, started as a regular oil tanker and just had a deck put on top. (While still functioning as a tanker underneath.) The British later built a bunch of these, as well as grain carrier versions, from scratch but the first few were conversions.

the difference is that the designers back then had the neurons to realize that a fricking huge box structure on the deck was not a effective way of maximizing the flight deck space. This concept alluded these morons

If this cargo ship with a ramp proves feasible, then many 2nd and 3rd world navies would realize that they could also build one even if the all the planes they will use are propeller driven ones or even cheap drones. Its like the 1930's all over again.

  10. 3 months ago

Pretty cool. Close to a US carrier concept from the 60s.
The landing strip is at the front and angles towards the centerline. That way you get this large space on the flightdeck that can be used for parking and rearming while on the conventional flightdeck you have to move the aircraft to the front after landing and then for take off you have to taxi them onto the back to clear the space near the catapults.

      Anonymous

there was a reason why this was not chosen, also this is still a better deign because of the size of the flight deck, the Iranian one is 1/4 of the size. so everything is going to be cramped as frick. Not to mention the risk of the plane crashing into the tower on landing. Which to a mind of a middle eastern pilot a large square tower is hard wired to be a place to land

It would be cool as frick if they treated this cargo ship conversion like a real carrier and conducted actual flight ops training with it, deployed it and ran it as if it were a serious warship working to fulfill Iranian policy objectives on the seas. But…that’s not how it’ll be used and everyone damn well knows it; it’ll just a budget prop for internal optics and regional sand peasant propaganda.
