This week's topic:
The Japanese Self-Defense Forces, their defense strategy and rearmament process.

>If the Japanese Army was a tradesman, and you ask him to hammer in a nail, you might come back to see him hammering it in with a rock instead of a hammer because that's how his great-great-grandfather did it.
>But when it becomes clear that's no longer going to work because everyone else is using hammers, then you might come back a week later and he designed a robot to hammer in the nail for him.

Perun is boring and adds nothing to the conversation. There are far better and more informed channels out there, like Chieftain or that Austrian colonel and there are channels out there whose jokes arent fricking cringe, like Lazerpig. Perun is also a moralgay.

        >What manner of absolutely chauvinistic imperial delusion were the brits huffing?
That attitude might have already existed before the 30s. Imo that was part of the reason why the more militaristic and co-prosperity factions had such an easy time taking influence in japan.
Both after the Russo-Japanese war and WW1 the other great powers treated them more like a backwater nation than an equal too.

Many of their leaders and elders were alive when the Japanese was raping their way into asia, so it's not really surprising.

Thats not reason enough, not like it was that different post-WW2 in europe.
And sure over here there is still some animosity but that's mostly harmless. Maybe poland seething a bit about the krauts or someone going about the holocaust to deflect. Most conflict is about current rivalries.

It was more fear they wouldn't be able to pursue their own foreign policy and would become subjects of the American sphere of influence. Which was half true, but not really. American interests extended so far as keeping trade flowing and curbing the spread of communism. An interest shared at the very least by the British which guided their (albeit reluctant) voluntary process of decolonisation in Africa, as independent states within the western sphere influence were preferable to rebellious subject states supported by the Eastern bloc. Personifying countries and attaching motivations like asshurt or rage rarely translate into reality.

I don't think that was the main issue, sure they had their problems but 1920s UK and France at least appeared still pretty dominant and successful and that only changed post WW2.
Ultimately no one tewated the Japanese as another great power and as a result they had the that it was impossible to be equals to them. As a consequence some had the opinion that they had to be stronger than them or they would end up like qing china.

Yeah, proportions are why I like the F-2 more too.

I would like to believe that a big part for why Europeans can more or less coexist now is the fact that Germany owned up to having done some pretty fricked up shit and reintegrating into the global community over the course of the Cold War

I don't know, if that's truly it. Over the course of the centuries almost every european nation treated the other horribly at one point or another and despite usually being quite unapologetic about it it was never too big of a problem.

              >I don't know, if that's truly it
I think I was being too hyperbolic about it too. I still think it's a contributing factor, but dunno how major it is.
I guess WW1 and 2 were the big events that made Europe realise that maybe it's about time to chill out and coexist and Germany fully taking all responsibility for the latter certainly helped.

If you want to be cynical you can look at the prison-industrial concept every state runs on and say peacetime is basically a fake concept perpetuated by the media. International war has been replaced by less obvious aggression, and dividing crime and war statistics is just a ruse to legitimise the violence of the state. But If there is one difference between now and then, it's that there are never any major famines anymore. In the thirties everyone was just one early/late rainfall/bad harvest away from death, and that doesn't make one kinder.

Do you really think Europe wouldn't have started another dozen wars if they felt like it, regardless of big brother America? People were poor and just fricking tired of dying and killing their neighbours. War was much worse and also affected the homefront with things like bombing raids. Peace and working together was the smart thing to do and people wanted that so that's what they did. Doesn't mean there weren't hard feelings or old hatreds under the surface. But they reigned in their chimpout instincts and eventually shit got better.

There's this whole process of grieving properly. If you're hurt by someone else, they need to face justice, apologize what they did to you, and you need to find it in you to forgive them.
Germans and their neighbors did this whole process as properly as they should, and it was so good, that there were combatants on both sides that forgave each others, and that has trickled down so that grandchildren of former enemies see no reason to hate each other.

This didn't happen between Japan and everybody else in Asia.
In fact, all the Imperial Japanese that should have been hanged as monsters, got away without any punishment, and

China, Vietnam, and NK are the only places that still super hate Japan, and that's more the position of the governments than the people that live there (apart from NK, obviously).

The problem is that people who did all the horrible shit like all of unit 731 were never brought to justice. And the apologies Japan has given have only been written or said sorries, not proper apologies that are in Asia on their knees, head on ground.
Compare that all to what Germany did. And still does. They earned their redemption. Japan has only done the sightshow for US. "Oh but we apologized, like you Americans told us to. We're clear how, right?"

No matter how much japan paid or how sincere their apology is, as long as japan still exists it will NEVER be enough for the people who are still looking for japan to apologize "properly".

Bullshit, both Germany and Japan quickly had their reparation debts wiped clean by the US, and both Germany and japan have since gone and paid some amounts to certain countries over the years, but by and large japan has paid more, and gave up a significant chunk of territory that they owned from DECADES prior that had nothing to do with WWII but they had to give them up anyway which cost billions since japan had invested infrastructure in these places that they were forced to abandon.

By all accounts Japan has paid more in WWII reparations than Germany in terms of value given to those affected.

You clearly don't know how military programs work. For example the new wheeled IFV shown last year began development at the same time as the Type 16 which date back to 2003.
You are just looking in the wrong direction. One of the primary points of the LCV is the in-hub motors to reduce the weight. Obviously they can't develop the entire vehicle until they finish developing key sub-systems. They are obviously still developing it since this was posted in 2020.
          https://web.archive.org/web/20210323080057/https://www.mod.go.jp/atla/rikusouken/gsrc_opentech2020/vehicles/LCV.html
Also the 5 year buildup doesn't cover every project they plan to do and is just an outline that is given more detail with every FY budget and supplements.

GATE was a missed opportunity to show an interesting convergence of a fantasy world intersecting with the modern world, more than just guns shoot swords but how the modern world could uplift and change the fantasy one
Instead its nothing but NEET wank with e-girl magic girls.
      >are you a fat POS NEET?
      >well join the JSDF and you too can frick all the "1000 year old children" you want
Also I recall a dogshit story thread of Russia, China and the USA decide to send their beer league special forces to try to capture the magic e-girls and they all fail miserably
Not to mention the author is some ultra-nationalist and has the worst takes possible on Japanese geopolitics, if I recall in his "story" Japan pretty much just pisses of the entire world, tells the USA to frick off, breaks international law, and gets away with it cause Japan is great.

In his defense some of the best and most schizo shit I've ever read comes from Jap ultranationalists.

For every successful special forces operation of the type that is worthy of an action movie, there are three that fail spectacularly.

Japan is such a powerful country.

    It's unreal.

Any country with US bases are irrelevant, and should be ignored. US decides everything.

Aren't Japanese air to air and antiship missiles pretty good? Not to mention having a large fleet of AWACS, they should be able to make China bleed even if they can't outright win.

Obviously they weren't used in combat, but I think Japanese were first to put AESA seekers on missiles, so they might have quite good seekers

They're working with MBDA UK on JNAAM, which essentially takes the Meteor missile body and puts the Japanese AAM-4B seeker (Ka-band mm wave seeker) on the front. As the AAM-4B is too large to fit in the F-35's IWB. JNAAM is designed for the F-35 and will most likely be integrated into GCAP.

Doesn't this thing have a relatively fat radar cross-section despite being "stealthy"?

Yeah, side RCS is dog shit, frontal RCS is decent considering its size though.

          not with those canards

I said decent for it's size, which includes the canards.

Yes the canards make it worse, but it's still decent considering the size of the canards.

his vids are aggressively mediocre, but the amount of seethe he generates cannot be denied. I look forward to the asspain he generates ever week more so than the vids themselves.

He is a super awesome popular analyst that's for sure. A little bit cringe at times, but probably the best one amongst the normie analysts. Plus, you have to love that dry Aussie humor.
