NATO human enhancement

NATO has released its first international strategy on biotechnology and human enhancement. What do you think we'll see in the next decade? Better exoskellies? PEDs? Biosensor-augmented IVAS type beats?

    Human Enhancement Technologies are biotechnological and non- biotechnological interventions that enable individuals to operate beyond normal human limits or abilities. Opportunities to leverage human enhancement technologies for our defence and security include improving:

    Military medicine and rehabilitation of military personnel, leveraging advancements in prosthetics, devices and treatments;

    Mobility of our operators, especially by using exoskeletons to assist with physically demanding or dangerous tasks; and

    Cognitive awareness, especially in complex operational environments where human-machine interfaces and fatigue countermeasures can enhance decision-making beyond baseline human capabilities.

        Aviators and SOF in most countries already get some type of medication during intense periods of fatigue, such as modafinil or dextroamphetamine.

            It happens in wartime, pretty openly.
            It isn't currently wartime for most.

        Hence the enhanced penises that protect you from that. I just prioritised the protection from personality because that's still the most dangerous part.

      Only if me and like three other guys convince them to fund it. It's achievable, to a first approximation. A buddy has written a decently thorough paper on it.

      nothing too outrageous
      I'll provide translations

      >Detecting, identifying and monitoring chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats using AI-enabled bio-sensors;
      better/easier to use detection kits for chemicals and mediacal diagnostics
      "AI-enabled bio-sensors" is a load of buzzwords. A pregnancy or covid test is a bio-sensor.
      >Decreasing strategic dependencies on strategic competitors and potential adversaries by using synthetic biology and bio-manufacturing; and
      subsidies to Merck/Bayer/Sanofi so they return antibiotic production home after they outsourced it to China
      >Leveraging unique properties of BHE-enabled materials for military platforms and infrastructure, including those that are stronger, lighter, self-healing, less toxic, more efficient, and/or faster to manufacture than current alternatives.
      better band-aids
      >Military medicine and rehabilitation of military personnel, leveraging advancements in prosthetics, devices and treatments;
      better prosthetic limbs for guys who had them blown off
      >Mobility of our operators, especially by using exoskeletons to assist with physically demanding or dangerous tasks; and
      this one is pretty clear- exoskellingtons
      >Cognitive awareness, especially in complex operational environments where human-machine interfaces and fatigue countermeasures can enhance decision-making beyond baseline human capabilities.
      "we will give money to Elon Musk and try what we can do with that Neuralink thing"

      >AI-enabled bio-sensors
      The AI can read and declare the results, and prescribe appropriate responses. Not a buzzword.
      >Better band-aids
      That's fricking huge.
      >Cognitive awareness...
      No Musk-ovite need apply. I think NATO are a little shocked at how well Delta integrated herself into their systems, and then integrated various Ukrainian actors into *that*. That Ukrainians have an AI responsive enough to provide relevant data on logistical supply to a Ukrainian battlefield before officers even search it let alone before foreign powers are even aware of their capacity to assist is nothing short of remarkable.

    this is one of those areas where China might actually get an edge, because they would have no qualms about experimenting on people. Any sort of genetic engineering is a huge moral clusterfrick in the west

    • 2 weeks ago

      I have gamed it out a bit, among the handful of other biotech people I know who are willing to discuss the topic* with no filter. People come away with different conclusions, but we're all in solid agreement that china's biotech r&d gap is currently so large that it will require a long and obvious build-up for them to establish an offensive program of any real potential.

      We benefit tremendously from the ludicrously low quality of chinese academia.

      *Red-team bioengineering is such a no-go topic. It's hard to get professionals in relevant research areas to open up to the cold blooded wargaming mindset. People cling to their biodefense-above-all norms for fear of themselves being labeled dangerous.
