The klr 650 the ultimate adventure bike. >The dimensions and ergos of a big adventure bike with the power of a small dual sport all while having suspension from the 80s
Truly the thinking man's choice
I used to sell China’s “most reliable” motorcycles, CFMoto. Let me just tell you, nothing in the fricking world will ever make them good. Their assembly quality control is poo.
Their metallurgy skills are shit. We had so many warranty claims that the dealership just gave up. There are countless “ABC Spagetti” companies that when shit hits the fan with warranty claims, they simply close up the factory for a while, rebrand themselves and market it under another name. Look at Vmoto for example in Australia . Then comes the fact you are directly funding the CCP military, it’s 100% real.
Never. Ever. Buy. Chink.
I now live in Japan so I am blessed with an internal market that can provide me with other choices.
Also as for OP’s statement, no the KLR isnt the best. It’s OK at everything you would want but doesn’t push anything over a 5/10 in most departments.
Ask yourself “where will my adventure take me”.
If you are in South America, SEA or Russia buy a bike that’s ridden in that area and specifically for the speeds you will be riding at.
For example, no joke, a lightly raised up MSX125, bash plate and drop cage would be 100% fine for almost all of Asia.
I live in Japan, you COULD adventure here on a $500 50cc mini bike. I ride a NC700x but it’s too big for 90% of the shit you would do here.
I rode a MSX125 all around Australia, twice. Oil changes and its fine.
Low compression is a thing.
If you go the TW200 you can do more off road shit sure, but upgrade the forks and spring.
In South America you would aim for a 150cc and have it exactly stock because it’s likely to be stolen.
For Africa? Yes a TW200 would be nice but you would want to learn to fix it yourself as some nibba will probably frick it up.
Big ADV bikes are just a cope. They offer comfort on long highways and thats about it. Once you actually start getting in mud or sand you will wish you got something lighter.
Packing more than two pairs of anything clothing wise is just stupid.
A waterproof jacket and pants sure.
Maybe if you go somewhere cold buy the clothes when you get there.
You would be astonished how much shit you can fit in 15+15L side bags and a 30L dry bag on top. Occy straps are you biggest investment, buy the absolute best .
Do not fall for any other marketing.
I have spent THOUSANDS on stupid fricking gear that is “THE BEST” and none of it comes close to my first pic, plus the side bags in this pic.
It’s all you need, and a bike that can hit 100kph.
If you are in Murrica, sure knock yourself out and buy a XR400 and slap a Safari tank on it if you dont mind the extra juice sloshing about. DRZ400’s are very finicky shit boxes and you DO need to change the oil and shit load more than the XR250/400
t. guy who has done alot more OTW shit than most here have.

Would a yam XRS 125 be a stupid investment if that kind of endeavor is my dream? Guess I'd probably need something that could manage some off-road, I don't know if the XRS is really the best choice for this kind of long trip as far as 125cc as concerned but it looks cool...
I live in Europe, and I'd love to travel from France to Finland, sleeping in a bivy.

I mapped a route from Lyon to Helsinki avoiding tolls and highways. 48 hours total driving. Not sure of its scenic, it’s 3000km.
If you’re going now its 11c at 4am in Helsinki. You wont need a shit load of stuff.
Your only downside with an Xsr125 is that the only tie down points are the pillion foot pegs but it will eventually pull toward you jamming your balls (or poosi) into the tank. You will need to find a solution since the rear seat space is cramped. I don’t recommend wearing a backpack on a “standard” seating position motorcycle, it will frick up your lumbar from all the bouncing unless you load it very light.
or get this and the bags https://www.motostorm.it/jp/accessories/bag-supports/givi-tmt2126.html?currency=JPY&gclid=CjwKCAjwtcCVBhA0EiwAT1fY7yk4FJmmD4BgpEGQKsBu6x-hTNEJLsF4RCzQiZDLe7jgJq29sbFJwhoCvKkQAvD_BwE

Firstly, I think it's the most effort someone ever dedicated to answer a question I had on PrepHole, thank you anon I really appreciate it.
I didn't even consider that for the XSR125, good thing you mention it!
Honestly as far as motorcycles are concerned I have yet to make my first purchase, and I have several options in mind. The XSR125 is the most expensive one, but I don't know if I'm willing to pay that much since I intend to get the cat A licence one day.
I've been considering and dual sports, supermoto mainly, something that could use the road well enough while still allowing some off-road if needed. If I feel crazy enough I'd be fine with a sub-1000€ used bike as long as it's reliable enough for my purpose.
Been thinking about the Honda XL125, Suzuki vanvan, TW125, yam DTX125 and so on but I've been having trouble finding something under 1000€.
Also while I can probably get away with packing light, but I still wonder if the shapes of supermoto and trail road-legal bikes could accommodate all my bags. I definitely needs to distribute the weight properly

Thats ok fren.
I wouldn’t recommend buying a spency bike as your first tbh either.
I learnt my lesson from buying a faired Aprilia Rs125 (2004). >You vill drop it. >You vill need insurance. >You vill pay out the ass for insurance
Get a shit box that has service history and insist at the dealer some kind of warranty if the motor detonates for some random reason.
If you buy second hand, check up on some first time buyers guides on what to look out for but in a nut shell. >check oil level once warmed up for 2 mins. >check dip stick rim for discoloration (white foam n such) >check chain and sprockets wear and tightness (especially tight spots). >check tire manufacture date and stay within 3 years, 4 years is pushing it. >check brake pads and disks (for unsual wear mainly on disks >check over the frame like a lunatic >look for touch up paint >check rubber parts cracking (fork dust covers are not too much to worry about) >look for oil pissing out the forks >check brake fluid level and color >listen for heavy tapping on idle (valve timing >test ride for clutch bite and any weird wobbles etc (steering bearing can be worn from wheelies)
Anything 125 and 4 stroke will be ok for what you want to do.
With any shekels you do save from buying second hand can be used to learn to wrench yourself.
Buy the tools as you go or find a fren to borrow theirs
Trust the nip stuff.
Be wary of Honda owners who think “its bullet proof” and don’t touch their bikes.

Saved that checklist of thing to look out.
You're right, I think I found a more suitable option for a first bike, the suzuki GN125 >dirt cheap >inexpensive to maintain and insure >plenty of parts, simple mechanic for me to maintain myself >light as frick (107kg!!) >low consumption for the time paired with a 10L tank >plenty of space to straddlebags >it getting stolen is not as likely
I could probably even stash it in some bushes when I go hiking, depending on the spot, and so some very light offroad if the need arise.
The only downside is it tends to vibrate a lot at high revs and the brake are quite terrible, but at that price nothing is perfect.
C90Adventures on Youtube for proof
Amazing stuff, found about the guy 2 days ago and it comforted me into pursuing my dream trip. Anything I could possibly attempt would be less crazy in comparison kek

Yeah he's a legend, a bit reddit but credit where it's due. The last episode he just uploaded is quite sad
Idk man. I haven't even got the bike yet. My friend has one that he likes. It's how I learned to ride.
The general consensus is that a used honda is typically better than a new Chinese bike for the same price. But I haven't been able to find one for a reasonable price.
Gas is over 5 bucks a gallon here, and my truck gets 12 mpg. So I need a bike.
Thinking of getting into bikes but I live in a small country where outdoor areas have a bit too much pressure on them for me to be happy making a total racket with a bike and annoying all the wildlife and other people. Is there any cheap way to quiet them down a lot? For example are aftermarket mufflers readily available for cheap?

Get a Grom. They wont piss you about EVER. The new ones made in Japan have ABS and a slightly bigger tank. I used to carry soft fuel pouches that roll up once used and 2 litres at 95kph would get me 80km-85km extra fully loaded.
Yes the best all round adv bike is a 125 cc scooter that tops out at 50mph, has 3 inches of ground clearance and suspension travel, vanishingly little luggage capacity, and carriage bolts for axles.
Packing more than two pairs of anything clothing wise is just stupid.
A waterproof jacket and pants sure.

Yeah the bike with proper cooling needs its oil changed more than a bike with zero active cooling. Drzs are some of the most reliable dual sports out there. Most people will almost certainly be better off buying a recently produced drz over a bike that went out of production 20 years ago.
As I said, bash plate. You could easily put longer forks, shocks and shit on it if you really wanted to push your height up.
A grom stock is fine though i’ve ridden it plenty on chunky rocky roads and inna woods. Just take it easy.
>3 inches
It’s six with a stock header pipe.
You can raise it up with very little effort 2 inches and with more effort 3. It doesn’t effect the steering or handling if you do it right. >50mph
As I said if you are in Murrica don’t consider it because of Nissan drivers.
>the best all round adv >grom stock is fine though
These mean very different things. Just because you can do some adventuring on the grom doesn't mean it is a good choice compared to what else is out there. I once met a guy who rode from Florida to Canada on a honda ruckus and put 20k miles on it in between. He said it sucked but he wanted a challenge. Just because it is doable doesn't make it ideal.
It looks like a pretty good value bike. not having 21/18 wire wheels will limit it to more smooth dirt roads but otherwise it looks reasonably priced for what you get.
Efficient, reliable, kind of easy to work on (just have to remove the tank for stuff).
Definitely needs forks fitted for your weight and an adjustable preload spring.
If you’re going full PrepHole on 60% tarmac you will be totally fine.
Boring as frick to ride but hey I ride a Nc700x lol
I can't afford one, and they have no range. I know there are quiet gas bikes, I just want to know if there are quiet gas dirt bikes. Or should you just make your own by installing a bigger muffler?
>More than 400cc
Total larper shit that's too heavy to do anything
Indeed. It’s something pig fat office workers have no idea about until they are 700km from water, dropping it every 30 meters in soft sand or mud and in debt with a 15-30k german or austrian shit box and completely out of steam from lifting it up.
The average adv rider will always say “MUH 790KTM is light enough” until shit hits the fan.
Honestly, frick all the morons who think more CC = better. They have never ever been off road.
Then comes COG (Center of Gravity), even if you think 180kg wet is light, if its a parallel twin, 90deg upright, 4 stroke with a big tank, it’s going to be ass to lift off the sand.
Hence why I got an NC700x, even though i’d rarely ever go offroad with it in Japan, if I drop it, it’s absolutely piss easy to lift due to it’s engine layout with the headers and shit almost touching the front wheel dead center.
It’s why inline 4s are fricking hell to lift for wamen.
Name one brand that can compete with KTM for power/weight.
KTM/Husqvarna make the best adventure bikes for actually going PrepHole, but they are more expensive and require a bit more maintenance.
I'd say the KTM Enduro 690R is the best PrepHole bike on the market today.
ADVs are essentially goldwings with better suspension, they're highway cruisers that can handle shitty roads. That makes them a SRV instead of an ORV. The last thing I'd ever want to do is blast highway miles on a dual sport.
That's funny because the ktm 890 weights less than a nc700x and probably has a lower center of gravity due to the low mounted gas tanks.
Name one brand that can compete with KTM for power/weight.
KTM/Husqvarna make the best adventure bikes for actually going PrepHole, but they are more expensive and require a bit more maintenance.
I'd say the KTM Enduro 690R is the best PrepHole bike on the market today.
They didn't sell particularly well and they are now out of production, so have fun paying out the ass for them until prices fall in 2-3 years after people take off their rose colored glasses
I'm currently in the process of building a bed in the back of my truck, and due to space constraints, I've decided on a 125. From what I can tell, the average wait time is a year right now.
this anon knows, ive got the urge to load this up with gear and leave for an off grid cross country ride, is there anything better? >light weight >high intake >electric and kickstart (i hear fuel injection still runs with no battery) >huge luggage rack and points for more >literally made for going slow and basking nature glory
Here in Japan there is almost a cult following. You see the cutest girls riding them too off to campsites. God why am I riding my Nc Seven Hunnit when I could be sharing a hot choccy and scrambled eggies with a qt 3.14 Jap
Alright what are the best US states/places for PrepHole riding. It should have a mix of fire roads, jeeps trails and singletrack. Also it should be scenic. So even if some shithole like Iowa has good trails it's ruled out since it's just flat farmland.
I have Tiger I got for commuting when I moved to the DMV, but I've been considering doing some adv riding since it's getting expensive to take my truck out. Anyone have experience riding around these parts?
Don't say DMV. Only northgays say dmv. Va is mostly trash for adv riding. Very few dirt roads. Not sure about Maryland and Delaware but that are probably worse. Wv has a ton of dirt roads. Check out the monongahela nf. Va has good pavement riding though.
I got pic rel. It's a archive scrambler 125. New btw. How log will it take till the chink parts will frick my ass. Got cos it was cheap so my expectations are low. I didn't wanna get a used motorcycle cos i don't know shit about that kind of stuff, at least i got a honda motor.
I tried, but it's behind the fairing screw hole and I can't get on it without fricking the threads.
I need to find something less dense so I can inject it with a syringe.
Drz400
>similar power
>130 pounds less

You can raise it up with very little effort 2 inches and with more effort 3. It doesn’t effect the steering or handling if you do it right.
>50mph
As I said if you are in Murrica don’t consider it because of Nissan drivers.
>the best all round adv
>grom stock is fine though
These mean very different things. Just because you can do some adventuring on the grom doesn't mean it is a good choice compared to what else is out there. I once met a guy who rode from Florida to Canada on a honda ruckus and put 20k miles on it in between. He said it sucked but he wanted a challenge. Just because it is doable doesn't make it ideal.
the double u ar to fifty ar
What about Honda cb500x? I'm not saying this is the best. I just want to know what you think about it?
It looks like a pretty good value bike. not having 21/18 wire wheels will limit it to more smooth dirt roads but otherwise it looks reasonably priced for what you get.
This is my first bike, got it last season.
Congrats. Its always nice to see more people getting into riding
The KLR651 Is way better.
Is there such a thing as a quiet dirt bike? Love riding but I don't want to disturb wildlife and hikers.
Electrics have pretty good range and more torque than the moon.
I can't afford one, and they have no range. I know there are quiet gas bikes, I just want to know if there are quiet gas dirt bikes. Or should you just make your own by installing a bigger muffler?
It will still be over 80db most likely
The 690 is a great bike although I prefer my 500.
Electric bikes are poop. Gtfo
An electric one
Electric bikes are poop
I've heard good things about the WR250R but there are none for sale around me.
They didn't sell particularly well and they are now out of production, so have fun paying out the ass for them until prices fall in 2-3 years after people take off their rose colored glasses
>More than 400cc
Total larper shit that's too heavy to do anything
Not like I've ever ridden a bike, but I like this one.
Is the exhaust specifically designed to burn your leg or what?
I think the silver thing on it is a protector or some kind of heat shield.
it keeps you warm on cold days
I'm currently in the process of building a bed in the back of my truck, and due to space constraints, I've decided on a 125. From what I can tell, the average wait time is a year right now.
this anon knows, ive got the urge to load this up with gear and leave for an off grid cross country ride, is there anything better?
>light weight
>high intake
>electric and kickstart (i hear fuel injection still runs with no battery)
>huge luggage rack and points for more
>literally made for going slow and basking nature glory
Here in Japan there is almost a cult following. You see the cutest girls riding them too off to campsites. God why am I riding my Nc Seven Hunnit when I could be sharing a hot choccy and scrambled eggies with a qt 3.14 Jap
Here in America fat boomers buy them to store in the garage until they no longer start.
I had an old CT 90 postie bike painted camo for a few years as a farm bike, pretty fun
god bless the postie bike.
Alright what are the best US states/places for PrepHole riding. It should have a mix of fire roads, jeeps trails and singletrack. Also it should be scenic. So even if some shithole like Iowa has good trails it's ruled out since it's just flat farmland.
How about a crf300l rally for a road PrepHole trip
Sure. Highway will be a bit unpleasant and I might not pick it for multi-thousand mile trips. Otherwise good bike.
Unpleasant on highways but fine on other roads right? I'd rather avoid the highway in generals even if I have to take a long trip
Yeah it will be good on back roads and can do short stints on the highway.
Versys-x 300
C90Adventures on Youtube for proof
I got pic rel. It's a archive scrambler 125. New btw. How log will it take till the chink parts will frick my ass. Got cos it was cheap so my expectations are low. I didn't wanna get a used motorcycle cos i don't know shit about that kind of stuff, at least i got a honda motor.
SWM 650
Although I have a klr 650.
And I made a hole in the tank by tightening a screw too much and I can't fricking fix it with the resin REEEEEE.
Marine jb weld or Seal-all will do the tric
I tried, but it's behind the fairing screw hole and I can't get on it without fricking the threads.
I need to find something less dense so I can inject it with a syringe.
