The genre has moved on, but it HL1 and HL2 were the biggest innovations in the FPS genre since Id made Doom and Quake. (Doom is still good today, especially with mods)
A lot of us remember HL1 fondly because it was a huge deal at the time. The gunplay was very realistic for the time, the levels all blended into a cohesive flow, and it was great example of "show, don't tell" in storymaking.
