My brother has severe autism and his fixation is trains and coal smoke. I think it would really make him happy if there was some sort of coal-powered thing for sale, but my searches aren't turning up anything.
Anyone know of something I can get him that lets him burn coal?

Fab one with a plain hatch in the cab, leave the doors for cleanout and it can be both grill and play boiler.

Yeah, he has really expensive DCS (?) trains with all the controls and fake steam. The Stirling engine I considered but I don't think he really likes that.

Coal is nasty dirty stuff its advantage is its cost per unit of energy.
Charcoal is way cleaner and will do pretty much all you need from it that you might get from coal and you can even make the stuff yourself pretty easily. there's a thread up about it right now.
Steam engines aren't really that complex but are potentially dangerous, pressurised live steam is lethal stuff.
You can make a simple newcommon style engine that relies of filling a chamber with steam then cooling it with water to condense it somewhat easily.

I have over 700 hours in Factorio, and I can confirm Stirling engines are awesome.
These are cool af, but I have known of 2 people get very badly burnt by them.
I'd approach these with some caution if they are prone to fiddle with things.
