My brother has severe autism and his fixation is trains and coal smoke.

My brother has severe autism and his fixation is trains and coal smoke. I think it would really make him happy if there was some sort of coal-powered thing for sale, but my searches aren't turning up anything.
Anyone know of something I can get him that lets him burn coal?
Thanks!

Also, by burning coal I'm not talking about the /misc/ meme. Please don't waste my time with that.

Fab one with a plain hatch in the cab, leave the doors for cleanout and it can be both grill and play boiler.

Coal smoke is a bit toxic.
My dad had a little stationary steam engine that used methylated spirits as the heat source for the boiler.

Good point. Knowing him he'll literally huff the fumes. Much appreciated, anon!

how much money do you have?
      coal-fired model trains do exist

Maybe someday when I have money I can get him something like that

Stirling engine + toy train. You can buy the stirling engine kits for less than $100. Should work fine with lumps of grill charcoal.

Yeah, he has really expensive DCS (?) trains with all the controls and fake steam. The Stirling engine I considered but I don't think he really likes that.
He's like a moth to a lamp when he's burning stuff in his firepit, loading it with a spade and conductor's hat. I just really want to put a smile on his face, you know? It's a shame, I might have to look into those small rideable trains someday

I'm not convinced OP isn't the autistic brother.

Excuse me sir, but I'm the schizophrenic brother. TWO autistic brothers would be hell; we're literally opposites

If your brother hasn't heard of him before introduce him to Fred Dibnah.

Coal is nasty dirty stuff its advantage is its cost per unit of energy.
Charcoal is way cleaner and will do pretty much all you need from it that you might get from coal and you can even make the stuff yourself pretty easily. there's a thread up about it right now.

Steam engines aren't really that complex but are potentially dangerous, pressurised live steam is lethal stuff.
You can make a simple newcommon style engine that relies of filling a chamber with steam then cooling it with water to condense it somewhat easily.

Coal is from shit like peat bogs charcoal is purified carbon. The only possible drawback to it is the carbon dioxide meme shit.

Anyway if you have black exhaust that's unburnt hydrocarbons. Make your stack bigger so it can combust and improve efficiency.

If the NiH said it's anti-inflammatory drugs it's probably vaccines causing autism.

              wrong
real vaccines don't exist and 99% of drugs you've ever heard of (including "vaccines") are, technically, some kind of anti-inflammatory some weaker some stronger

biggest risk factor for REAL autism is age of parents when the baby is conceived
biggest risk factor for """autism""" will never be found because it's a made-up syndrome resulting from chronic (neuro)toxicity just like most "psychiatric" illnesses in history (does anyone debate lead poisoning? no) and fake "viral" illnesses like poliomyelitis (neurodegenrative syndrome resulting from ingestion of DDT during childhood, which was intentional, the Rockefeller Foundation was behind DDT, polio, and the fake polio vaccine, as well as closely related horseshit like "blood types" which were needed to make the hoax credible)

This is really some revolutionary knowledge. I encourage you, give an O-negative person A-positive blood. If it's horseshit, there should be no ill effects, right? I'm sure nothing will happen.

I'd approach these with some caution if they are prone to fiddle with things.

There are scenic steam locomotive tours all over the country (assuming you're American.) Then it could get Train & Coal. Kind of fun. You could also purchase a working steam powered engine and you might be able to use coal to fire it... https://www.amazon.com/s?k=working+steam+engine&crid=1Z7VNV1FUZY25&sprefix=working+steam+engine%2Caps%2C96&ref=nb_sb_noss_1
