You mean if the components (engines, radar etc) are taken care of? They don't have the ability to do that kind of engine right now, and I say that as a huge SpaceX fan. Rocket engines are much, much easier than high performance jets.

Actually though that'd be interesting if they took the iterative, hardware rich test early and hard approach honestly. If only because it's been so long since the US did that. But assuming for some reason he was taking it seriously, it'd take a solid 15-20 years to see results, they'd build up just like at SpaceX, do trainer jets and so on first. They didn't do Starship day 1, they did Falcon 1. To be designing an ASF now they'd have to have started doing jets in the mid 2000s.

Another issue would be the need to manage a lot of subcontractors and integration. SpaceX and Tesla have both gone big on vertical integration, but that doesn't work for fighters at this point. Nobody can do it all. He doesn't really have the right personality for that.

Still would be interested in theory to see what designs they came up with using a SpaceX (ie, US in general in the 1950s and 1960s) development methodology, with the aim of mass producing and ironing stuff out in real flight early. But we never will.

It's an easily quantified metric for normies to understand compared to networked sensor fusion which privileges AI even more. I'm not saying Musk doesn't legitimately believe some dumb things, but he does deliberately dumb down his dialogue when addressing the masses.

It'd probably look like your classic saucer UFO, be equipped with a completely untested MARAUDER plasma gun and designed to pass the karman line. The first 20 or so would also explode in very public launch attempts.

Optionally manned, VTOL, smooth style stealth, really fast, precise maneuvering, extremely good computer systems, escape pod rather than traditional ejection seats. It'd be more like the SpaceX Falcon 9s than any of his Tesla offerings.

First prototypes explode one way or another during testing. These would be used to iron out problems and figure things out. The first eventual successes aren't just a regular success, but downright amazing first of it's kind historical milestone type successes. During early years a few production fighters explode but nothing explodes while actually manned. After enough time no more planes of that model explode instead working shockingly well and with longer successful lifespans than you'd expect. The next model starts life largely the same as the last however but with less explosions due to previous lessons learned.
