moving to the US in a couple of months, what gun to get for protection in the city. Both carry and home defense. Want something cheap but reliable, nothing fancy.

What city?
I smell something in here
>Don't give what state, therefore basically make recommendations impossible
>Don't state where you're from, therefore making the experience/knowledge likelihood of owning and firing firearms impossible
>Don't state your financial situation, therefore making suggested firearms based on price impossible
Good thread anon.
still not sure, either nj or texas, since i got family in nj and i got a job opening in san antionio
So you are entering illegally? Those two locations are very far away from one another. 1500 miles. How can you possibly not know where you are going to be living?
i have a visa currently but im getting a green card since i have immediate family in the us.
pretty sure you need the green card first
but I have wondered if someone on a tourist/work visa could legally purchase a BP gun as they aren't considered firearms in most states. I wonder further if there is even a state where a tourist could open carry a bp revolver, find themselves questioned by state LE and have no problems. I assume it's a problem with feds tho
as i said i have immediate family in the us which makes me eligable for the green card, plus ive visited the us with a visa 3 or 4 times in my life.
Eligible to apply, it's not a guarantee.
You can buy a regular firearm if you are on visa status that's still valid (IE you are in the country legally) and if you have a valid hunting license.
Green card is definitely preferable though.
As far as BP, if OP moves to NJ they are still regulated like regular firearms.
In TX and most states they are free to buy, but if carrying in public it's usually the same rules as a modern firearm. Thinking you can legally carry a BP gun where you can't carry a modern one is a myth. Telling people they can do that is bad advice. Cut it out.
In any case TX has constitutional carry now so OP could legally do that if he wanted to, but it would be dumb because he could just get a modern firearm legally anyway.
i already want to throw you into the ocean
get out
every get the frick out of this wetback thread
you will do nothing and your country will fall to browns for it
you don't care enough
My dad recently (last year) got his green card through me being family first preference category. Took 10 months, and this is with him have held a green card before 20 years ago and him having a SSN already. So if you want a gun ASAP, I'd look into the alien purchasing requirements rather than wait for a green card. If you are an immigrant alien with an alien number, there shouldn't be any issues as long as you answer the form correctly and provide your alien number. If you aren't on a immigration visa, then there's other stuff needed
https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/may-nonimmigrant-alien-who-has-been-admitted-united-states-under-nonimmigrant-visa
Protip: do not apply for a greencard from WITHIN the US. That goes through the USCIS which is a subordinate agency to Homeland Security. Both of those agencies are huge bureaucratic messes and will take you at least about 2 years to process (much worse if you are from a country which has an ethnic majority that now makes up at least 1% of the US total population). Instead, apply frim your home country. That application will have to go through the US embassy in your home country. All embassies are ran by the State Department, and they run a remarkably tight ship. You are looking at processing times from 2 weeks until interview up to around 5 months. Additionally, staff is educated, have some level of intelligence, and can and will answer questions you might have, the USCIS will not, even if you manage to roll a lucky 777 and get to speak to an immigration agent.
Also, your application is not guaranteed just because you have immediate family there.
ive been to the embassie here in belgrade, talked with them about a year ago i think, they said as long as i keep my record clean, keep in contact with my family there (meaning they can vouch for me) and do some other shit that i cant remember right now im fine, as i said i have a visa, i can live and work in the US, but a green card makes things 10x easier.
you still have to specify city since they will also have their own gun laws as well
Lying homosexual
i want to move to san antionio, i got a friend there and its not a bad city from what ive heard.
Even in shitty cities you can do fine without a gun, dont feel like its a requirement to stay alive in the US.
Also just buy a glock 19
san antonio's not bad at all as far as large US cities go, so long as you're not moving to the part of the South side that's literally just Mexico. For CC just get a pocket .380, Ruger LCP or M&P Bodyguard. For home defense get a Maverick 88.
>obligatory frick off we're full
What country are you coming from?
Getting a gun in NJ is an absolute nightmare. NJ in general sucks with high taxes, insane corruption and moronic laws. Half the state is economically dead with high crime rates because it's basically NYC overflow. There are nice parts, but it still sucks to live in those because of all the other problems.
Texas is much better. San Antonio is genuinely wonderful with a strong economy and reasonable cost of living. Getting a gun there is very easy, and the crime rate is pretty low. If you have a job lined up, go there instead. You'll be able to actually afford a home of your own that's not a burned out crackhouse and build up intergenerational wealth instead of working to rent for the rest of your life.
I will make this absolutely clear. In the choice between "Somewhere in NJ" and San Antonio, TX it's an absolute no brainier. If you move to NJ that's going to be a life altering frick-up.
As far as getting a gun, that depends a lot on your immigration status. If you will have a green card it's easy. If you are on a visa you'll have to get a hunting license first, which isn't difficult. Glock 19 is the default choice for handguns, but there are many acceptable or good alternatives. Mossberg 500 or Maverick 88 is the default shotgun. AR-15 is the default rifle, PSA if you want to keep it cheap.
again im fricking stupid when it comes to cities in the states, ive been to nj and what i remember it was very nice, again dont remember the town/city it was but i remember big houses and big malls, all far away from each other. i do remember hating new york, it was stinky and there were a lot of black people and junkies.
>>NJ
New Jersey residents have a harder time getting a handgun than half of Europe. As a foreigner, good luck obtaining one there legally.
just get a glock 19 lol
my dad has a glock 19c, its his service weapon, he's been telling me to buy one as soon as i move
Don't get the c though, they are a meme the gas obstructs your vision and you will occasionally be pelted with bullet shavings. Try his out you'll see
shot his gun when i was younger, dont remember much since i wasnt interested in firearms at the time, but the gun laws are so strict where i live because of a recent school shooting that people without a license which is very hard to get cant go to the range.
I'm moving to the states soon but unsure of what city or state anyways
probably going with h & k anyways
for my first guns
unlike u homies i need good specs
"buy once, cry once" only works if you know what you're doing
Used glock 19 with a tlr7. Done
i'mma be in seattle
Where are you from?
serbia
Move to San Antonio and git yew some of that greasy purple Hispanic pussy, shit stays wet for hours. And some BBQ too.
i have no idea what you're talking about. im not interested in mexican women thanks.
You will be. You… will be…
>im not interested in mexican women thanks.
Oh wow, you ARE new here, aren't you?
Don't you get it?
Frick off unless you admit the NATO bombings were fine in which case you're fgood
of course they weren't fine, serbs were protecting christian land from muslim invaders, the kla was considered a terrorist organization until they offered nato coal and gold mines in kosovo for military aid.
It could've been avoided if the Yugoslavs had just left Kosovo with equals status to Serbia inside the republic, but they reduced it and then got shocked that the 80% of the population that was Kosovar Albanian got mad
this is not a politics board so i wont argue, but maybe research some topics further than a feature history video and then argue online.
Generally, for conceal carry you want the largest gun you can carry comfortably. The larger the gun, the easier it is to shoot well (more weight to soak up recoil, larger sight radius, easier to grip) and the more comfortable it is to train with, they also tend to have greater capacity but that's less important imo. On the other hand, a gun does you no good if you left it at home because it was inconvenient to carry.
Any gun that's good for carry will probably be enough for most realistic home defense scenarios. Sure, they might not be "ideal" compared to something larger with more rounds but most home invaders will run from anything when it starts going bang.
For you, I'd recommend the P365 XL, Hellcat Pro, Shield Plus or something else in that size range. Small enough to carry for most people in most climates, large enough for a new shooter to shoot accurately and train with comfortably, and with enough capacity to deal with most realistic threats.
If you want a dedicated home defense gun as well then get an AR in whatever price range you can afford, or a Maverick 88 shottie if you need something cheap.
The pistol would be able to handle home defense just fine though, especially if you get an extended mag.
FYI, you can buy a gun on a temporary visa if you also get a hunting license.
/k/ shifting from "Serbs are based removers of kebab" to constant NATO bootlicking really shows how badly wartourist redditors have fricked this board.
Go the frick back to where you came from.

nta, but i always figured the Serbian admiration more as ironic shitposting than genuine sympathy, making fun of a fundamentally incompetent and dysfunctional military that was nevertheless charming due to how absurd it was. Kind of like how Priggy's gang is treated today.
Oh shit Serbian?
For greek food, go to Mina and Dimi's on the west side, make sure to get the feta fries. Kind of a sketchy area, but just eat there and leave.
Rusty Bucket is in that general area too and has good BBQ.
Generally speaking, the North side is the good side. North West and North Central (like Alamo Heights) being the nicest. North East isn't as rich, but isn't sketchy.
I'm not super familar with the South side, but some parts of it are just straight up Mexico and other parts have farms and shit and are inside 1604.
west side is a mix. There's some newer luxury apartments around Seaworld and stuff, but the areas around the bases and Mina and Dimi's is kind of sketchy.
this is so fricking helpful thanks! one of the things that make me re thing moving to the states is that i have to be 21 to drink or buy cigarettes, ive been drinking and smoking since i was like 14.
also if you're somehow still active on this thread please give me a solid neighborhood with affordable rent to move to, how i understood things, ill stay in nj for a couple weeks then move to san antionio if i decide to.
Really the only advice I can give is around the UTSA and medical center areas. I lived just south of UTSA while I was there (most of my time was being a student there). Although I moved out partially because of rent hikes after COVID and also because traffic is awful there.
The specific area would be "De Zavala" west from I-10 as well as Babwiener down to 410.
But yeah, traffic is pretty nuts around there.
My other recommendation would be the North East side like Universal City. Probably more affordable and not exactly sketchy. Helotes on the North West side is also a nice area, but idk how affordable it is.
Short version, anything above this line is gonna okay
south of that line isn't going to be necessarily sketchy or anything, I'm just not as familiar with it, although there's definetely some sketchy parts on the west side, although not Chicago level bad or anything.
And for the tobacco and alcohol, yeah idk. That law passed after I was 21. Maybe live in a somewhat sketchy part of town so you can get a fake ID lol. All of the big chain gas stations will scan an ID before selling you tobacco even.
First priority would be a gun you will be able to carry concealed, so some variety of wonder 9. Glock 19 would be adequate but I personally carry a Sig P365, and there are lots of similar options. Go to a range that has a rental wall and try a bunch of stuff.
Also, the only thing you Serbs did wrong was not fully eradicating the Bosniaks.

first actually helpful response, i saw a lot of people online recommending the p365 but i guess ill try some pistols out when i come to the us, and then make up my mind. thank you.
>fully eradicating the Bosniaks.
>t. Live in St. Louis
Oh come on man, the lemolians are good people. What did they ever do to you besides keep the Black folk in check and roast some good goat. They're also pretty hard workers
so Bosnians are frens?
p365
I like my VP9 pretty well but you'd be fine with a glock brand glock
Get a Draco, and then recreate the story of Hearts of Darkness by traveling into the darkest depths of Detroit or Baltimore, and lead a tribe of homies to victory against their enemies.
Stay out, we are full and frick you!
Also, border hoppers are not allowed to own guns. Only permanent residents and citizens. If you break the law, then you will be criminally deported and never allowed to legally enter into the USA again. The USA is also a shithole soon to be 3rd world country, so just stay where you are, and leave us alone.
if you took time to read my posts im not a border hopper, and i am eligible for the green card.
>Home; Mossberg Maverick 88
If you can't find one check out pawn shops for hunting pump shotguns and use a pipe cutter to take down the barrel to 18.5 inches.
Don't buy Turkshit, and don't pay over $250
>EDC; Auto 9mm
Glock 17 is overpriced
Get Ruger Security 9mm, S&W Shield, PSA Dagger.
Don't pay over $275. No Hipoint or other plastic dindu crap.
>Optional Summer pocket carry;
5-6 shot compact snubby 357/38; Ruger, Charter Arms, even Taurus makes a decent compact.
Don't pay over $350 for a 38., $450 for a Mag
Glock 17 is too big for edc unless you open carry.
Get a cheap turkish import and dump it into the river before you book it back to where you belong
Define cheap. Better yet, give us your budget.
>Destitute
Hi point/taurus/used psa dagger with a mystery meat wish slide that looks nothing like what they have in the catalog
>Starving college student that has a part time job
Beretta apx on rebate (or wait for the price to lower again(gotta believe)). Psa dagger. Police trade in glock likely in .40. or turkshit canik.
>Poorgay (normal)
Glock
>Poorgay (moronic)
Glock on payment plan that ends up being $800+
>Poorgay (lazy)
Springfield xd or s&w m&p with those package deals with 5 or more mags and a soft case
>Poorgay (smart)
Used glock from someone going all in on the new glock killer with non factory plastic sights and additional mags. Or a new gun from a shop with a distributor exclusive deal like pre installed night sights or free gun rug.
Handguns are solved especially for poorgays.
