I'm from AZ. I shit you not, a few months ago I saw a guy walking into a Walmart with a Desert Eagle on his hip. He had a mullet, was wearing a cutoff ACDC shirt tucked into his jeans with a rodeo belt buckle, & boots.

        World's largest larper community, Arizona.

99% of people who open carry in AZ are all larpers, because AZ is like the only state where you can carry concealed without a permit/license as of October 2023. If you can legally own a handgun (over 21 with no felonies & no violent misdemeanors), you can carry concealed.

Vermont here. What's a "gun permit" or "gun license"? Do you mean a driver's license in order to buy a gun in the first place? You don't need to carry that with you after buying it anon it's just for driving.

Everywhere in the US potentially had Black folk afoot. Wearing a gun on your hip is like a big "SHOOT ME FIRST" sign for would-be aggressors. It's only a deterrent when a bunch of people OC at the same time, which isn't very likely for your average joe.

          Anonymous

This is only true in the tiny minority of situations where criminals actually intend on shooting from the beginning, and if you don't make a habit of hanging around ghettos you'll probably never encounter one of those. The vast majority of crimes with guns involved are armed robberies by criminals who don't actually want to catch a murder charge, often spur of the moment crimes of opportunity, and the presence of an armed bystander is way more likely to make them decide it's the wrong time and place for a robbery than it is to make them decide to turn an armed robbery charge into a murder one.

Also I've lived in a high-crime city my whole 37 year life and I've never actually seen a murder or armed robbery go down, but I have had a few situations where shitbags on the street were obviously thinking about trying something and immediately backed down and quickly moved on as soon as they got the slightest impression that I MIGHT be carrying. I just don't OC because I'm afraid some dumb b***h karen is gonna call 911 acting like I'm an active shooter and get me shot by the cops.

            Anonymous

            As explained here

Sadly, in most areas of the country OCing is too controversial (or at least too weird) for average people to be comfortable with. I go out into the woods and camp with my bros and we all open carry, but we walk into town and people give us funny looks. It would take something radical like widespread terrorism or an actual insurgency a la Israel to change that, not just a bunch of people OCing for political reasons. Even in the "Wild" West, many towns banned the open wearing of firearms within city limits, and that was when literally everyone had a gun in their home. It's just never gonna be socially acceptable.

            , that's never gonna happen.

The ability to live away from them is rapidly diminishing, considering the sheer number of African "asylum seekers" Biden is flying to small ass towns across the country.

If everyone were to just carry concealed or openly it wouldnt be a problem. If everyone is walking around AZ with guns hanging out I feel like it is not cringe, its their normal.

      Anonymous

Everyone OCing would also eliminate the "now you're a theft target" thing, because rather then being special you just become part of the normal, potential thieves are still outnumbered. However it's a classic collective action problem, because if only a few people OC, then there is advantage in CCing instead and letting the OC people attract the attention. So if you are below a critical mass of OC it incentivizes "defections", which end up further incentivizing defections, until you settle into a steady state like we have now of a few OC people who do so for other reasons and vast majority CC.

        Anonymous

Sadly, in most areas of the country OCing is too controversial (or at least too weird) for average people to be comfortable with. I mean, that's kinda what I was saying. There's a lot of classes of problem like that, and entire areas of study like Game Theory around explaining certain kinds of emergent behavior and how some things can be self-reinforcing. If 90% of people OC then there is some level of "herd immunity" to certain problems with i and no much advantage in CCing, because you'll just be assumed to be armed anyway. But if say even "only" 50% of people OC, so it's still not "weird", there is competitive advantage individually in CCing instead. That then encourages more and more to CC, and then OCing becomes strange and thus it accelerates even more.
