Nobody use these gear for the sake of fashion unless its some third world country. Its the same reason to why everyone adopted woodland m81 and also digital camouflage. If it works, it works. Whether you look good comes last.
While the physical characteristics of a piece of kit play a big part, "SOVL" is nearly always a consequence of a combination of actual use and greater purpose, which warp our perception of it. Most modern armies just LARP and if they do actually fight, it's some gay low(er) intensity and meaningless conflict that also does little to serve the interests of the nation or humanity, sometimes actually harming it.
Once this stuff is put through the test of conventional warfare, it will either be proven inferior and cast aside or be immortalized as /k/ino. Even in the case of smaller conflicts, if it serves a greater purpose people will look upon the aesthetics more kindly. For example, Grenada was basically a cakewalk against a tiny enemy force, but the context of the time period (height of the Cold War), the image of a revitalized US Military, and a couple really good photos gave our kit soul.
The grenada invasion exposed a few problems with U.S. military gear.
1) its their first deployment with the new gear and it specifically has Nylon/cotton blend twill. While it increases durability, the soldiers in the invasion complained about the uniforms retaining too much heat in the humid weather and they initially went back to 100% cotton for hot weathers until they introduced nylon/cotton ripstop.
It doesn't matter to me if it looks good, as that is suggestive. What matter is that a nations camo and uniform is unique to that nation. That serves practical purposes as an identifier of a soldier's origin.
At least use siege as an example. Even the fricking women have the exact same build as the men in that picture. Good lord this kind of slop is what people play these days?

This reads like someone trying to wax poetic about funko pops. A piece of gear is just a bit of matter strung together in an arbitrary configuration. Stop being such a gay about it. Nobody gives a shit about your funko pops or whatever. Feel free to collect them, but also be prepared for people to mock you relentlessly for your brand of saccharine, romanticized consumerism.
>While the physical characteristics of a piece of kit play a big part, "SOVL" is nearly always a consequence of a combination of actual use and greater purpose, which warp our perception of it.
muh SOVL is just nostalgia value and I'm tired of pretending it's not >people born in the 90's >M81 is SOVL!!!!! >people born in the 2000's >UCP is SOVL!!!!
coming up next >people born in the 2010's >multicam is SOVL!!!!!! >people born in the 2020's >AdaptoCAM is SOVL!!!!!!
What is effective is more important than what has soul, but yes to those of us who are not actively utilizing such gear it's insufferable.
Soul is simply "not oversaturated", sometimes with personal touch or uniqueness. M81 started to wear itself thin when everyone was wearing it by the late 90s, same as OCP/Multicam is proving tedious when everyone, even opposing sides, both use it. And a major motivation is not effectiveness or even cheapness but rather rule of cool. People like to imitate the top dogs on the scene. It was the French once upon a time, it was the British with the Sam Browne Belt and height of Victoria, it was the Germans in the early 20th century, it became American with Hollywood and video games.
Some of it is definitely "Multicam is cheap and available" but why is it cheap and available? Because of the rule of cool and people wanting to imitate the cool thing around.

Same as it ever was.
Carolingian due to the helmet, but you're right. It's also a reason why while I like the concept of late antiquity as a total war or similar broad scope game it is awful because it's "We arr rook same we arr fight same".
I mean that's true for all of history though. Human beings adapt to whatever the leader is doing. Even Rome Total War did this with different factions having their own legionaries and having to distinguish the Egyptians by having their troops be thousands of years out of date.
It varies in intensity/prevalence. You're right since the first instance I can think of it historically is the Mitanni-Hurrians coming in and establishing the chariotry 'meta' such that their terms for scale cuirass and charioteer became the common vernacular for almost everyone in the region same way french terms are the root of a lot of our stuff (Latin too but whatever you get the point). With 'legionary imitations' that's more modern misunderstandings and thinking that these were imitations of the Romans when they were more of a parallel evolution as much/more inspired by Galatians through Thureos bearers than by the Romans who arrived after it was already underway.
But again, the main thing is how omnipresent it is. Soulless being sameness means when everyone has the same kit (or close enough) you start to find little to differentiate groups on a glance. It's the difference of Cold War NATO (Huge variety in gear) versus Cold war Warsaw Pact (aside of outlying APCs everyone uses the exact same vehicles and aside of outlying AKs everyone uses the exact same small arms). Logistically and shit it's far better, but for armchair experience to which 98% of us are it's suffering.
That's because the GWOT created a glut of military suppliers and governments are no longer obsessed with domestic production, so they're more comfortable buying from allies.
Plus the Cold War wasn't as diverse as you think it was.
You “SOVL” homosexuals are so annoying, go make another thread complaining about FPV drones not being “based” or b***hing about the new, better thing phasing out the obsolete shit you’re obsessed with. Frick you contrarian homosexual, I hope every nation switches to multicam and an AR pattern rifle with a Glock sidearm just to piss you off.
ITT a bunch of "iF iT WeRkS iT WeRks" morons intentionally missing the obvious fratricide/blue-on-blue problems that come from enemy personnel wearing not only the same camo, but possibly even using the same rifles, helmets, and similar plate-carriers (even boots!) as friendly personnel.
This is unironically one of the single biggest reasons for the US to go full-bore on shit like IVAS.
And people need to stop pretending most of the world doesn't orient most of their military shit based entirely off of what America's doing, up to and including camouflage patterns. >"If I larp as the best military in the world, I will inherently absorb their competence and everyone will think I'm 'serious.'"
Are we likely to go to war with any of the countries copying us? It seems more likely any future war is going to be another round of us bullying poor people, who won't have the money to dress up like us. So I'm not seeing the problem?
>Are we likely to go to war with any of the countries copying us?
Possibly the chinks. Also do not underestimate the power of thirdies to unabashedly copy the uniform of whoever they're fighting in order to "confuse the enemy."
>Fratricide and ID concerns
You're correct. Anyone can order "not multicam" and "not helmet" from AliExpress to varying levels of quality to include near perfection. Hamas or Hezbollah could wear the same OD green as the Israelis.
it's only got two purposes >ability to carry your shit >identifiable so you don't get shot in the back
and it's only ever supposed to have done that
for as long as human history
Before the ukraine russia conflict russia was starting to adopt ARs and multicam for some of its better units.
Same thing with china.
They have AR using units now.
America military, and the american civilian market turned everythibg not restricted out of average civilian development into the best thing globally.
Flat top ARs and optics becoming normal, and rails allowing the attatchment of tons of civilian products were all civilian innovations.
The military would have had sights on the carry handle still without the civilian market. The civilian market made optics normal, which then spread worldwide.
Eugene stoner does get some credit for the base rifles though.
Most of the world fell behind because it didnt have a large civilian market that could legally have modern weapons on a large scale and add innovation.
So they were stuck with limited r&d from a few big companies and military and police made due with them.
So now most of the world adopts what the usa invented. Or a german or other version of it.
Russian military, 2013 >Huge (20+) variety of home-grown camouflages in use by individual units for various locales >Uses chest rigs and belt-kit 25 years after NATO militaries have abandoned them >Famous for finding success with small arms that are 50+ years old >Unique body armor with asymmetric plates >Helmets with extended coverage >Flashy stripped shirts worn by elite units with no fricks given >Unique suits designed for specific functions with rugged mountain suits and baggy sniper suits being common
Russian military, 2024 >Only three camouflages in use, two of which are American, the other is effectively just OD green >NATO style load bearing gear >Brand new rifles covered with NATO style accessories >NATO style plate carriers >High-cut NATO style helmets >Flashy stripped shirts worn only in parades >Standardized NATO style uniforms
They ran out of thier own stuff and are purchasing stuff from the american market. Probably smuggled out of the usa through some russians let in under asylum to escape the war and russia or illegals in a sanctuary state like CA. But poor immigration control is our strength.
>They ran out of thier own stuff and are purchasing stuff from the american market.
I saw an American flag on /chug/ claiming he was making money selling gear to Russia.
Well doing so violates ITAR and will result in prison especially if it is going to an active enemy to outfit them to fight your nation's ally that your nation just sent hundreds of billions of tax dollars to.

I don’t care about soldiers but cops should never have switched from plain black or blue fatigues. Firstly camo is moronic when you’re raiding a hostage situation in a mall, second is the police should not look interchangeable with the military. It’s bad for identification and it intimidates members of the public. Police departments that do that shit are just Larping because they never get real action
looks like australian commandos maybe? The camo looks like the aussie camo, and none of the special ops guys use augs
From a European nation perhaps..
>aussie camo
No moron, it's literally multicam
This is why Multicam is gay, I don't care how effective it is a nation should have its own unique pattern

Without googling that's an 1900s artists idea of clothing of from 800-1000. Either Byzantinian or Frankish. So many errors it could be anything

French maybe? Looks like a tricolor on the front guys head.
That was my guess too- they have French eyes
What are French eyes? French are (I say this with affection in my heart) a mutt race.
the eyes of an butthole
It's the eye of the homosexual
It's the thrill of the wiener
Kek
You laugh but it's true, the French unironically do have distinctive eyes.
