I'm looking for some magnified optics for my 14.5 jack of all trades rifle in 5.56. I can't decide between:
-LPVO
-Fixed 5x Prism
-Red dot + Magnifier.
Given a budget of ~$700, where would you land?

I have a holosun + 3x Vortex on my 10.5" build, and that's kind of perfect, but I'd probably want a 5x magnifier for something build for longer ranges than that.
>5X magnifier
No you don’t, you’ll be better off with something like a vortex viper
whats wrong with them?
Awful eye relief, you’d be better off with that PA prism and a red dot
I just use a fixed powered scope these days and slap on a red dot on top.
>$700
The best you’ll get is Filipino stuff or something used
Vortex viper is good
No love for the Primary Arms lpvos? This is mostly a have fun in the woods rifle, so I'm looking for value not necessarily bomb-proof
The cheap ones are ok and chinkshit
The mid tier ones are good and Filipino
The platinum tier ones are great and Japanese
I want a SFP one so I’m considering the mid tier
I was curious about FFP vs SFP. I went first for my long range bolt scope, but I can see how SFP might be useful for something that will spend half it's life as a pseudo-red dot.
although
is FFP with an illuminated donut/dot in the middle, so that might work too.
Why are drugged out flip goblinos supposedly better than patriotic (if overworked) Chinamen? It's "Made in USA" that's the junk label nowadays
Re: asiatics, it all comes down to qc.
The hanburglars chabudao all over the place while by some oriental miracle the pinoys have a higher standard for the shit they push out, no idea why.
Probably better compensated and not full of bodily abscesses caused by perpetually eating processed food in a place where there's no EPA or standards so they're generally less grouchy or something.
Glass quality
Poortex or primary arms LVPO
they aren’t bad but they aren’t trijicon/nightforce
Unless you punch into their $2000+ line, nightforce is meh. Trijicon’s can’t seem to get daylight bright right with their lvpo’s
What about a 1-8 Strike Eagle with FFP for $599?
The newer ones have great glass for chinkshit, almost as good as an ACOG
1X sucks on most LPVOs, you should go with a MPVO plus red dot
This LOOKS like walmart-tier chinkshit, but I sort of like PA stuff so this would be a dark horse possibility for me in fixed 5x.
They're making a new Micro Variant of it and I hope they keep the picatinny rail and not slap on their MRDS mounting on it like some dumb ass frick manufacturers are doing.
Is there any mention of timeframe?
I want one of these but just a little bit tinier for a carry handle AR build I've been looking for an optic for. I was thinking about PA's 2 or 3x prism but if they are doing a 5 shortly that would be great, assuming it's not fricking eyeball to aperture eye relief.
occasional distance shooting, red dot + magnifier.
occasional short distance shooting, lvpo.
But if your budget is below $1000, you’d be able to pick up a solid red dot + magnifier (mount excluded) vs. upper entry level LVPO.
That's a good way to think about it. I think it'd be mostly distance with occasional up close stuff. I'm leaning towards the viper atm, Midway has them for $599 currently.
Burris RT-6 is a nice option. Good 1x and clear glass.
SIG Tango MSR. I've seen them close to $250 on sale with the mount.

That’s pretty sus, do you have one?
I have the MSR 1-10x and its very solid and comes with a good mount. Eyebox is shit at 10x and there is marked edge distortion at 1x but otherwise it's the best bang-for-buck on the market.
I was considering one for muh 20 inch upper, I’ll probably go with a vortex viper
Yeah. The 1-6 is superior to the 1-10 in terms of glass quality and eyebox. Reticle also gets bright enough to use during the day. I know people meme on CDOES here, but his review was what I used to decide between this and the RT-6.
C_DOES is the only guntuber I have faith in because his videos are first person reviews instead of the video being him talking about it on the table.
The 1-6 tango is also cheaper so I might actually buy one.
I watch his stuff quite a bit. I was interested in the tr24 untill he reviewed it
I have this setup and like it. Not my rifle. But about $500 altogether if you get these things on a sale. 1/3 the cost of the acog/RMR version and the glass and illumination are both good. Would love to hear others' opinions on it tbh. I sold all my LPVOs because I just didn't like them that much. This feels much lighter (I think with the red dot, it's sub 13 oz).
JK Sorry. I have the Venom 3MOA dot, not the Burris fastfire on my 5x prism.
Steiner P4Xi 1-4x24mm
Search gun.deals
Doesn't that one have kind of a wacky reticle though? Like 4 spires, Halo style?
No, the P3TR reticle is really nice. German posts at 3,6 and 9, and a center crosshair with a BDC/autoranging out to 500m.
The other reticle is ghey though
Just noticed this reticle they make also
I don't like that one personally. I had the other version of the 1-4x with this reticle and it was nice. The dot gets very bright. I was able to take my basic b***h 16" Aero Precision 1/7 twist 5.56 upper out to 200 yards with just over 1MOA groups with that scope and some 77 grain ammo.
That said... I ended up selling the scope. While it is really nice I just don't like LPVOs. Not for me I guess.
I'd say if you're going to spend less than 800 bucks on an LPVO, the Steiner is definitely the one to get. I don't see the point in going for higher magnification if the glass is lower quality, and the Steiner has better glass than any sub-1k scope I've ever looked through that wasn't a Leupold.
Those are like a monkey’s paw.
Just like Leupold they are cursed with outdated reticles but great glass and durability.
Nvm turns out I was thinking of the SAI optics 1-6, picrelated. Not sure I could ever get used to that.
That does look like halo
God I want that fricking March shorty.
They've got a 1-8x now that has dual reticles so the stadia lines don't change size as you increase magnification, but the drift table and dot does.
Honestly I might just hold off on other optics for a long while just so I can afford to get one.
I got two things I wanna put optics, suggestions welcome
1) an ak104 clone (has adjustable cheek piece and i have the full length rs regulate side rail)
2)an fal (has a mount a cobbled together, two 30mm rings on it)
Myself, I like a 1-6x in a qd mount with a pair of flip up irons.
Specifically, I've got a Viper PST in a LaRue mount with a pair of mbus sights. Seems p gud to me. Scope is a heavy fat pig however.
That is a nice scope for the money but at almost 22 oz I couldn't do it, personally. Also why do you need MBUS if it's not a red dot?
Eotech + Sig 4x magnifier. Your budget isn't big enough to get a quality LPVO/MPVO and a dot. I'll be willing to entertain the prism optic idea when somebody makes one that's equivalent to the quality level of an ACOG but modern.
anyone have experience with romeo and juliet
The Juliet 4x magnifier is excellent. No complaints.
thx, just getting back into guns( many years ) eyes cant into irons so well. having to learn optics. you prefer magnifier/ red dot over lpvo ? If so, why ?
I shoot lots of matches involving barricades and awkward positions. It's significantly easier to use a red dot or eotech in such positions because your head doesn't need to be in the perfect position. With an LPVO, looking through the scope and seeing black then fishing for a sight picture is thing. I either use an eotech with a magnifier or a 2.5-12x scope with an offset red dot. The holo+mag combo is better for close things but the scope+dot combo is better for further things. They're both serviceable at all reasonable distances, though.
appreciate the info from someone with experience with both, I think th eye box wins for me. You prefer eotech over vortex ( the other holographic I know of ) ?
I'm told the PA SLx 3x32 GenIII is just an ACOG for poorgays, and that the SLx 3X Micro is better, how true is this?
How bad is a PA SLX 1-6 LPVO for 550?
