Merkavas and Namers in Gaza

How would you guys rate the performance of Israel’s Merkava tanks and Namer APCs during the invasion of Gaza? And does anyone have loss info on them - if at all?

Its a total disaster, Israel has lost dozens of tanks to ad hoc RPGs fired by 67 iq brownies. Israel is lucky they aren't fighting a proper military.

They obviously censor it, like the israelites below their beds.

I can only compare it with the videos of syrian tanks in the syrican civil war since its similar with an army entering a build up ghetto city and fighting irregulars and its doing fine.
dont know how many they lost but ievery loss surely have been recorded by hamas and i havent seen more than 3 videos of tanks getting hit and not one exploded catastrophically, compare it with the t72 in sirya and it actually looks like a modern military

whats the purpose of the chains?

protects mildly against HEAT rounds in theory

      defeats RPGs
its supposed to act like slat armor, crushing the copper liner of a shaped charge to hopefully defuse the round or at least turn it into HE instead of HEAT
slat armor is probably more effective, but the chains can be dangled anywhere convenient

I don't care anons, the Merkava is one of the sexiest tanks by far weird shot trap at the front of the turret but i can forgive that it's refreshing to see when every other tank is just a derivative of either a western or eastern design

      thats not a shot trap
its a composite array, so any projectile hitting it will end up buried somewhere inside it rather than bouncing
its believed to be made of either NERA or SLERA, which abrades and deforms projectiles as they pass through it

I absolutely love the look of the Merkava and I absolutely love how it has an IFV based on its chassis. Somehow Israel has a kino as hell military

It's pretty much a continuation of the bong conquerer that got a sext ERA/NERA package added to it for CQC work, so it's got that whole era's vibe still going on it with the GWOT upgrades.

          >It's pretty much a continuation of the bong conquerer that got a sext ERA/NERA package added to it for CQC work
merkava was designed as a homegrown replacement for the centurion after their british refused to allow them to build the chieftain under license if the israelis made any adjustments to it in production
which was probably just a pretext, because the israelis had been consulted on the design of the chieftain to begin with, and they just wanted an excuse not to give anything to the israelis after relations soured

so the israelis decided that relying on the brits for anything was unreliable at best and so designed their own tank based on their own needs and built it according to feedback from centurion and M60 crews
what they got was a vehicle that was designed to squeeze as much protection out of plain steel as was humanly possible and would always result in few crew losses even if penetration occurred
as well as an emphasis on quick resupply in the field, after centurions were down to firing HE in an attempt to de-track enemy tanks from expending all their ammo in a fight

The same as any other tank and infantry fighting vehicle (IFV, not AFV, because despite most not having the 30mm turret, Israel uses all Namer's alongside tanks as IFV's). The real standout is the Trophy active protection system.
