Malaysia what the fuck

FA-50s aren't even real fighters, they're trainers.

Why would you pick them over dedicated multirole fighters?

Less expensive to operate, easier to maintain, can be operated from improvised airfields. It's important to understand the limitations of your military in terms of budget. I'd rather have those and be able to properly train my pilots than a modern multirole fighter that sits in it's hangar because we're still saving up for spare parts.
Though with that being said I can't help but wonder if a high/low capability fleet of aircraft wouldn't be the best option. A few F-15s or whatever that can act as ghetto AWACS for your low capability fighters.

Who is Malaysia most likely to fight against next? What's their target use for these?

      Anonymous

      >What's their target use for these?
Can at least answer that one - their air force currently is a hodgepodge of thirty-eight mismatched F/A-18s, Hawk 200s and Su-30s. Every single airframe is at least 25 years old.

Since they're ordering 36 FA-50s, I presume their plan is to retire everything and have their air force modernized and standardized.

Also, FA-50s are $35 million each. As jet fighters go, that's not bad. How much is a "bargain" Gripen?

No SEA country in their right mind would buy slavshit after the Ukraine shitshow. It's go F-35 or go full asiatic.

Malaysia now has a smaller military budget than the Philippines. FA50 is the best they can get while everyone else in their region is moving on to F-35s Gripens and Rafales , even Flips are getting F-16Vs

          >even Flips are getting F-16Vs
Third time's the charm. You know they were totally going to get new F-16's in early to mid 90's, but 1997 economic crisis happened. They going to get second hand F-16C's around 2010, but that deal too imploded, partially due to economics and partially due to urgent requirement for COIN stuff to deal with muslim chimpouts south.

          >a hardware clone of the F-16
          >at a fraction of the price
          >made by South Koreans
It sounds like it's basically the perfect plane if you can't afford F-35s?

It sounds like perfect plane if you can't afford Gripen or F-16. It was gimped from the start to have lower performance than F-16, because Worst Koreans needed help from foreign manufacturers to develop it. They ended up partnering with Lockheed-Martin and their terms was basically limiting performance to level where it isn't a threat to F-16 exports.

        F35A $78 million, F35B $101 million and F35C 94 million

KF21 is going to $70 to $80 million per unit, almost certain they will get in line to buy several Boramaes

No one, if they want to keep living

      Comparison with neighboring countries:

      >Malaysia - 165k active and reservist personnel vs 796k Indonesians, 560k Thais, and 300k Singaporeans
      >48 Polish T-72s vs 500 Thai MBTs (VT-5, Oplots, and Pattons) and 400 Indo/Sing Leopard 2s
      >18 Su-30s (half of which don't fly) and 8 F-18Ds vs 60 Thai Gripens/F-16s, 100 Sing F-15/F-16s, and 50 Indo Sukhois/F-16s.... also the Thais and Sings are getting F-35s and the Indos have 42 Rafales on order

Malaysia would be raped by any single one of them, it will cease to exist if the other two jump in to exploit the situation

SAAB's job wasn't to make a plane for export, their job was to make a plane for Sweden. Foreign sales are welcome (to relive the burden on Swedish taxpayers somewhat), but they are far from the main goal.

It's enough of a fighter, more than that thing from Leonardo. And it can at least have AIM-9 and 120s. So it's enough for policing your own airspace. No one poor enough that has to resort to buying that rather than a real plane will need to do anything more than dealing with minor airspace violations

      Anonymous

      >and they constantly try to change terms.
When it comes to their domestic sales, its more of a case of failing to meet performance requirements. When it comes to Indians importing or even worse, manufacturing stuff under license, quite a lot of weapons manufacturers have gone for non defense or aerospace companies for their local partners for maintenance and manufacturing. Better to deal with companies that haven't been corrupted by Indian defense procurement schemes.

Lol FA50s cost the same as Gripen and about 2x F16s

Bullshit. You gotta go with pretty damn old fly away costs for F-16 without adjusting it for inflation to get price of F-16 anywhere near FA-50. That is before we get into irrelevant details like operational costs.

  27. 2 years ago

I think all military aviation observers today classify the FA-50 as a 4th gen. That’s not bad as long as you challenge peers and not try to contest with F-35 operators. BTW does anyone know what the latest and greatest engine developments from Russia are?

light fighters and trainers are typically the same thing these days and the tejas is very much a light fighter. so is the fa-50.

Wrong question. The right question is "can you afford good dedicated multirole fighters from a dependable source and the infrastructure and budgets to operate them?" Because with Made In India, you get neither good nor dependable. You might be able to afford them, but where does that get you?
