Surely the half deaf German soldier 200m away will hear it over the shells and gunfire, trace the sound back to the rifleman, pop up and shoot the man whose rifle is empty and therefor unprotected while the rest of the US Army claps in sheer awe of his cleverness and skill.
According to my kung fu teacher's grandpa who was in the 442nd in WWII, they actually would sometimes take empty clips and throw them at rocks to trick the Germans into popping out of cover.
I wish our family still had my grandfather's Garand. I've told the story several times on /k/, but my uncle got bumrushed by a bunch of armed Mexicans at his house who stole everything of value that wasn't nailed down including that Garand + many other guns.
My dream one day is to own a Garand, which will take a very long time due to my financial situation unfortunately.
That ping can get you killed. After you fire off those 8 rounds, BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG you will need to reload but instead of being able to do a quiet tactical reload, the rifle emits a loud "PING!" alerting the enemy to your position. Now they know where you are.

This was tested by LindyBeige and it turned out to be total bullshit. The ping is very quiet and the sound doesn't travel far
No shit. And even if it weren't I doubt it'd be loud enough to hear over, say, artillery, machine gun fire, people screaming, et cetera.
Everyone who repeats that crap probably got all their knowledge of firearms from fricking call of duty.
>idiots on youtube
not according to GI's, people who fought and actual historians. also alot of fighting in ww2 was at very close quarters. another example of morons on youtube degrading the quality of information.
>have weapon >makes very distinct and audible noise when empty
yeah no way that was ever exploited by the enemy. the gi's of the time literally devised tactics to counter that effect.
Yet there's not 1 single veteran who says "OH NO IT'S JUST A MYTH DEBOOONKED". Every one who was actually fighting in the holes with these rifles said this shit, same thing with how stupid loud that safety was which is why most people decided to keep it off. The M1 was a decent rifle but it was far from the best and had a bunch of little issues to work out and most of them got fixed with the M14, except that terrible safety.
From the 1952 ORO study wasn't it concluded that the clips' ejection could be heard at very close range but that most soldiers thought that it was a good signal to re load? From what I remember the noise of the safety as you mentioned was considered a real and serious issue.
>Revolutionary for it's time >Weighed only 9 pounds >Very accurate in the right hands >Relatively cheap to produce >Over 600,000 produced during WW2 >Stacked many Jerries and asiatics alike
The magazine holds 7 rounds.
wdhmbt
most garands have 8 round magazines, only the prewar ones have 7
>insert clip
>close bolt
>one round in chamber
Now, how many rounds are there in the magazine?
8+1
Wrong. The Garand does not have 9 rounds inside it's magazine when loaded.
>never shot a garand
there were 8 before you loaded the magazine into the gun or closed the bolt
Wrong.
The Garand employs a fixed magaxine loaded with clips
This gun is loaded. How many rounds are currently held in the internal magazine?
Never handle a weapon, you stupid frick
they should have just used 10 round magazines instead of 8
Original .276 Pedersen Garand held 10 rounds. When it was rechambered to .30-06 they dropped two rounds to make it work.
correct. most people dont know about the early garands
Of course I don't, for me it's the Winchester G30M. The superior repeating rifle. Of course the REAL GOAT is the Turner SMLE. Oh what could have been.
what the frick are you talking about, it holds 8
Wish my wiener would go ping every time it ejects.
>Pings a quarter-second after a much louder gunshot
Surely the half deaf German soldier 200m away will hear it over the shells and gunfire, trace the sound back to the rifleman, pop up and shoot the man whose rifle is empty and therefor unprotected while the rest of the US Army claps in sheer awe of his cleverness and skill.
most ww2 combat took place within 100 yards iirc
According to my kung fu teacher's grandpa who was in the 442nd in WWII, they actually would sometimes take empty clips and throw them at rocks to trick the Germans into popping out of cover.
>clips
moron
They are clips you moron. The Garand didn't have magazines.
>The Garand didn't have magazines.
Incredible
I know this is a meme post but I love posting this.
who's the moron here
actually that's called a clip

isnt ping a chink name not a nip name?
Imagine how brown you have to be to know things about nonwhite cultures.
A true White keeps his mind clean of any knowledge not descended from EVROPA

>alerting the enemy to your position
it lets them know youre empty.
If they're that close after you fired off 8 rounds, they already know.
>the enemy is counting your individual shots
This was tested by LindyBeige and it turned out to be total bullshit. The ping is very quiet and the sound doesn't travel far

My personal experience is that the ping isn't loud at all. Depending on what the clip bumps on its way down, it won't continue making noise either.
>have weapon
>makes very distinct and audible noise when empty

Put a full enbloc your garand, try and let the bolt close on all 8. It just won't do it.
…because it’s not made to close with eight rounds in the magazine. It’s made to close with seven in the magazine plus one in the chamber.
Are you fricking with me? Am I being fricked with?
I was more referring to the people who continually frick up with the 8+1 idea. I love my 11lb boat anchor and carry it whenever I can.
Better than anything your worthless country ever produced
Which one was better rifle?
Garand hands down. I own both.
what kind of question is that? the m1 was the best semi auto of the war and a contender for best infantry rifle of the war.
I pull the trigger. Then I pull it AGAIN.
