One day many years ago near the banks of the Euphrates river I was sitting in the hooch getting ready for a patrol. For whatever reason he began riding his bolt home with rounds on the feed tray and managed to fire a round through the wooden "floor" and into the gravel. It impacted right near my foot, and we all just about shit our pants. Despite all of the fire we took on that deployment it was probably the closest I came to being shot. Me and another guy walked out of the hooch and looked around, wondering if anyone had heard it as the "walls" were massive Hesco barriers and the ceiling was covered in sandbags. Then we suddenly both started laughing at our friend's misfortune because he was going to probably face some significant hazing in the coming weeks based on our platoon sergeant's preference of keeping things like this at the platoon level, if you catch my drift.
I check google maps every now and then to see what became of that god forsaken place. Google tells me it's a rest stop, but there is nowhere to rest but sand dunes. It appears there is nothing left of the BP but minor scars in the desert terrain, lost to time as most of my life often seems to be.
