But have an unprogrammed spare. 2006 Toyota Corolla, is there really nothing I can do on the cheap here?

Why would you have an unprogrammed spare?

You can make a spare key anywhere. I did this with a used Hyundai I bought that only came with one key. Even if it won't start the engine having a second key to be able to open the doors is helpful.

I have a plain metal spare for simply unlocking, but oddly I do have a spare that has a chip in it but won’t start the car.

I have no idea why my spare is unprogrammed. The car is sorta older, there’s no chance pic rel might help? Really annoying to have to drop so much so cash when I have a cut key right in front of me.

Because last dude didn't want to pay for it same as you. Not sure how a flipper would help.

Yeah, got one of these in the mail already. I drive for USPS and think I lost it somewhere on my route, just hoping it turns up within a couple days before spending the money.

How do you know it uses rolling code? I can’t seem to confirm this myself

And it’s not a ‘fob’, it’s a key like this but cut for my car. Also, I have the title but since it’s my moms car I never bothered to do an official ownership transfer so it’s still in her name, it’s not signed over. Please tell me this won’t prevent me from getting a replacement key?

the official way is to tow the car to the dealer and pay $350 for them to cut a key to code and program it to the car.
they will want proof of ownership so you would have to transfer ownership of the car or prevent a valid proof you are taking ownership like a bill of sale or some paperwork or a signed title

the unofficial way is you buy this and do it yourself c**t https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805827971308.html
you will need an old laptop to slide the hard drive into or buy one additionally.

                wow thats gay,
                here https://www.aliexpress.us/w/wholesale-toyota-otc.html
just pick one that has an included hard drive, dont buy the cheapest fricking one either.
as always, do your research to ensure the one youre buying will work for your vehicle, but I think any should

Mom and pop audio shop can do you cheap with a key or maybe a key chain fob that will work with any old key. You’ll save a little. I thought you could order one and figure out program on youtube but, that is only what I’ve heard.

Maybe this helps. It is for an older yaris from 1999.
You need to translate it yourself.
I programmed my 1996 Carina E in a similar way.
You need one working key though.

I didn’t have a working key. I paid a black guy $100 to program my unprogrammed spare. Car starts now. I have two uncut unprogrammed spares coming in the mail. Cheapest way to get them programmed?

Most good locksmiths can come to your house and program one for you for under 200. they had no trouble doing so for my 2006 Chrysler.

Not worth it to get around key issues along but very cool.

This thread should be a warning to morons who think they're saving money by not making duplicates when they get a vehicle, but they're like people who fail to immediately transfer title then lose their signed title. That happens all the time. (I immediately transfer and pay for a hard copy which can save you if DMV loses your title record as happened to one if my bikes.)

Get keys, get titles, every time.
