Looking to build a watchtower. The city told me no several times when I pitched a 40 ft one in my front yard. My workaround is to make a 39 ft one, to show them that they can fricking shove it up their asses. Would anyone be willing to help me with the math here? I have a detailed illustration of what the final product should look like, with me in the watchtower, of course.

    Youre drunk or dumb

    Play nice with your town

You build a two story accessory dwelling unit with an attic and double hung windows moron.
What the frick is wrong with you?
    >"There are rules, so id like to dispay to everyone by my malicious compliance that i am THE WORST"

The right way to do this is the long game. Town select boards are pretty low key elections. Be a man, do it right.

around here building height is measured from the ground surrounding the structure
if you grade a big enough hill in your yard they cant stop you from reaching any height you wish

Around here it's based off of the driveway or road.

40ft when you need it, hidden when you don't.

Hard to tell without op posting the town code where he is.

I suspect op doth not have the skill to construct a 20, 30, 39 or 40 foot tower and this is all pretty frickin useless.
He just wants to feel like a victim and hear reeee's for his ego.
      Disgusting really.

So you're going to show them they can shove it up their asses by following the code that they demand you follow?
Who's the b***h in this relationship again?

Take all the math you did for your 40' tower, divide it all by 40, then multiply by 39. Wala.

If you build something, and then they revise the law / code and the thing you built is non compliant with the new law, do you need to "update" it? What if it costs you a lot of money to update it?

It obviously works differently depending on where you live, but where I live, we have grandfather clauses. If something on your property was legal but no longer isn't, it's okay for the already existing stuff to continue existing, but new ones can't be made. You can fix it if it's broken, but you can't remove it and replace it with a new one.

Some places will let you be grandfathered in forever but some will put a time limit on it. Often if you do a permitted renovation, everything existing has to be brought up to current code.

          Well that depends.
My experience with this is they wanted to see you increase compliance, but didnt nevessarily take it all.

I.e. a 24 foot tall building where a 27 foot tall building was even though buildings there arent sposed to block the view of the lake from the road.

Rules are generally easier in my state, its small. Some areas still have no zoning rules and many have no police so enforecement is pretty lax. Town has to take you to court so basically pay taxes and dont be an butthole and act ignant that there might be rules.

Lol yeah I helped a guy with a house, per the rules it was a repair because only one wall was left from the original building.
        Weird zoning law loophole bullshit.

inb4 your wife's son, this is why you don't need to collect many weapons or ammo for SHTF scenarios, you can just cap your local boomer and take his shit easy.

Move somewhere with more relaxed building code enforcement.

Or move to an area where you wouldn't need to have a watchtower in your front yard.

If you do this there, you wither comply with their codes or you will get constant fines shoved up your ass until you take it down.

    >Would anyone be willing to help me with the math here?
What math? It's the height of a building, not multi-variable calculus. Make the building below the maximum height allowed.

Right don't call it a "watch tower" call it a free standing tree house. Or a kids play set.
