Looking for an EDC flip knife to easily defend myself with.

Looking for an EDC flip knife to easily defend myself with. Switch blades seem "more illegal" than something that could plausibly be used as a utility knife, so I'd like the latter.

Is Spyderco a good choice? I want something compact.

the knives are not compact, but they're definitely a good brand

I genuinely hate stuff like this and feel like they're meme knives.

Get yourself a fixed blade and don't beat around the bush about the matter. If you want a knife to defend yourself, get a knife to defend yourself. No half-measures. You're not going to open a box, you're going to open veins.

I bought one of those Cold steel XL Voyagers like 15 years ago I still carry it everyday. Good solid knife. I do however carry a ka-bar in the go bag though when I'm going innawoods.

he's obviously just a dude that wants a pocket knife that could, in a freak situation, be pressed into being a weapon and not immediately fall apart. most people for a number of reasons can't lug around 6" bowies and daggers and shit in daily life, or even comically oversized folders like the Espada XL.

i understand the mentality of "your life is on the line, so why would you ever take a half measure" but it doesn't matter as much if you live somewhere relatively safe. if you live in an actual high crime shitshow location, you should just get a gun, and if you can't get a gun then having a large knife isn't going to make much of a difference because most of your threats are going to have guns, even bigger knives, numbers, etc.

my problem with knives like this, the PM2, the yojimbo, etc. are that they are very weird in a reverse/icepick grip. if you are talking about a small knife being used for self-defense, this is a really useful grip to have access to. for that reason i could never call them optimal as "weapon knives", even for a folder. however they are great tools with great ergonomics for doing actual cutting tasks, they don't look scary to most people, they will definitely serve you better than some $10 Amazon chink knife, and you 99.9% will probably never have to actually use a knife on a person anyway.

A knife is arguably the worst choice for self defense anyhow

Böker auto knives look pretty unassuming

To answer your question though, I have a Spyderco Harpy and the steel is very good.

Good, but you don't need to spend that much, It's a brand aiming at collectors and enthusiasts.
The Knife market is in a golden age and you would be just as happy with something half the cost unless something really has your eye.

I thumb flick thumb stud knives exactly as fast as my PM2. Zero difference.

        Anonymous

it depend on size of your hand i guess. Like i cant easly and comfortably open knife with thumbstad no matter what. Rat 1 is kinda ok, not perfect and with smaller size knives i just cant, tio do that i have to hold handle on akward position and im risking slicing my thumb on blade. I just reverse flicking thumbstad knives all the time instead with ez, no matter size. And i have 1 knife with hole for reverse flicking, much larger than tumbstud and its easier for my hand to open it with thumb so for me hole> thumb stud all the way

Goes the copper handle feel any different from a steel handle? I prefer G10 in most cases myself, but yours has a cool look to it I'll admit. Plus all the potential variance it could have as it gets tarnished, gosh. Now I want one.

The para is weighty but feels nice and not slick unlike my cold steel code4 with its thin alum scales. I'm not sure you can achieve that nice shipwreck patina just from regular wear though.

seems like you got the forging part down, now time to try different alloys as well as different heat treating. Eventually though you'd want to get into the different kinds of grinds. Looking forward to buying your customs in a year or so.

Yes, though consider getting like 12-16" telescopic baton for self-defense much more effective and still legsl in most countries

To avoid making a thread specifically for it Ill post here.
I have limited range in my country and I'm after a minimal flip or similar. These are the choices I've narrowed it down to

    >Buck 251
    $41

    >Buck 110 Auto Elite
    $272

    >CRKT Up & At 'Em
    >$60

    >Harnds CK9171
    >$43

I know theres one clear outliner but the auto does look pretty sick, I cant deny.

Auto knives are a meme. Buck does have a fantastic warranty though. CRKT is solid and great price. I carry a CRKT Eros SS, I love the pocket clip

        >Auto knives are a meme
        because they can accidentally deploy?
Also im mainly looking at the crkt and the harnds, but i hear the latter is technically better because it uses a ball bearing instead of a washer like the crkt

          Anonymous

Honestly, a decent manual knife with a properly tuned detent will deploy everytime just as fast as an auto/assisted while being legal in more places, easier to close, and safer in the pocket. Autos are fun, but by no means are they necessary, and sometimes they're actually worse.

          Anonymous

The CRKT Eros that I posted uses ball bearing deployment. Just look for this logo or whatever on the pivot when shopping CRKT, it means they use ball bearings on that model.

i converted the prices to usd, but its about 50-80 for a flip, willing to spend more for an auto since theyre cool but perhaps as the other guy said theyre a meme?
        >use
almost exclusively emergency situations during cross border travel. and cutting up small wood for fire
ive heard you gotta go full tang for "survival" but i think that will be too heavy/cumbersome.
Additionally Im not a fan of thumb open. maybe my buck 286 is just an exception but i find it annoying to open single handed

yeah fair go. there is something inherently alluring about them, but it perhaps the mysticism
