Long distance target shooting bolt gun?

Looking for an accurate, .308 caliber and sub 2k CAD bolt gun as my first rifle for long range shooting. Weight is not an issue and preferably something with a heavy barrel for long sessions of shooting. I narrowed it down to those 3 guns

>Bergara B14 HMR
>Bergara B14 HMR Pro
>Tikka UPR

Also, looking for a fun iron sight bolt gun. Ruger scout any good?

Get the Tikka T3x CTR. Bergaras are hit or miss.

seconding Tikka CTR, they come in a ton of variants and seem to come and go in waves. I've been waiting for the 24" barrel .308 stainless version to become available again.

What's the difference between the UPR and CTR?

Canadian rangers chose this and this is a Tikka T3 variant so it must be at least somewhat good!

Tikka T3 is great overall not just because it's accuracy but because it's the Lego set of the rifle world - you can find it in many calibers, with tons of stocks in different colors and camo schemes, trigger groups, barrel lengths etc.

That was my original intention but it's extremely expensive for what it is (like 3k CAD) and has a bunch of issues. I think the Ruger scout would be a better option for the same category

        UPR: Plastic stock
        CTR: Fiberglass stock
That's it. The barreled actions themselves are identical.

        >frick yeah, click buy immediately
        >next day realize that I clicked the 6.5 creedmoor
        >cs agrees to take the rifle back np, just ship it back once it gets to the FFL
        >go on site to order the .308 I actually wanted

That's what you get for not stopping at the "review your order" page.

The frick are you talking about? I have the ctr and the stock is plastic.

CTR is a slightly improved hunting style stock with an almost vertical grip and a bit more cheekweld, but a strong implication that you'll ditch the stock for a chassis. The UPR is more of a deliberate step for Tikka into precision long range, with some adjustability in the stock and a more practical design. Both use the same action, and the action is excellent. What's the price difference in your market?

UPR has much slicker bolt(yes its even slicker and smoother than already good T3/T3X bolt) and the stock is different and considerably stiffer.

I would get the Tikka. They're nicer than a Bergara and prefits are easier to come by.

If you’re genuinely into long range shooting (like competitively), just go with one of the high BC 6 or 6.5mm rounds. They’re just straight up more accurate, and The cost differences really start closing when you talk match grade ammo

But to answer your original question, every weatherby vanguard(the one I own was roughly a .7moa gun out of the factory), Bergera, and tikka I’ve shot has been outstanding. Really sort of a “can’t go wrong here” situation. I’d avoid the light barrel Tikkas; those are purpose built hunting guns

The UPR he posted is explicitly not a hunting nor light barreled rifle.

Howa could be an option if available. Howa is the wholesaler for Weatherby and has a huge aftermarket now days. Can be just under 800usd for rifle action and the stock of your choice

I have both but my bergara is 6.5Cm the bergara feels to me better made, better fit. Everybody will say Tikka, maybe I got a Friday lunch time model. The bergara is more accurate but different caliber so not like for like but even at 100m I get tighter groups with hand loads and factory match ammo from the bergara.

    Consider getting a b14 hmr in .22
You can learn much more by taking .22 out to long range because you can shoot much more and get the same training at a shorter distance.

Why does /k/ never mention the Ruger American in these sort of threads? One of my mates has one and it'll shoot .5 moa all day.
Did he just get lucky and most Americans aren't that good or is 0.5 moa inadequate?

The Ruger american is a hunting rifle with a thin profile barrel. It will heat up fast and thrown shots.
      >same with the t3x lite, remington 700 adl/bdl/cdl/783, mossberg patriot, ruger scout/m77, guide gun..etc

Never ever try to turn a hunting rifle into a target rifle. Its a total waste of money. Just get a target rifle right from the start and never look back

Mostly because Tikkas and - although there's some recent reports that this has changed - Bergaras tend to be nicer, and there's a bigger precision-rifle aftermarket for both - considering the Bergara gives you the whole fricking world of R700 parts - than there is for the Ruger American.
