Regarded by whom? Most stats (warhead size, # of rockets, range of guided rockets) are in favor of the BM-30. It would be more accurate to compare the HIMARS to the BM-22

      Anonymous

On paper stats don’t matter when the stats don’t match real life. When you can’t hit a point target from 30km away that’s a problem. Meanwhile the HIMARS gets first round on target between 20–135km. There’s a reason GMLRS is the talk of the town and the smerch isn’t

The Smerch dod well in trials and you won’t hear much about Russian Smerchs being used in Ukraine because it makes Ukraine look weak. All I have is

Which unfortunately is vague (it’s unclear if the rocket is guided or unguided, or at what range it was used) but nonetheless shows that the system does indeed work

Okay and? How does HIMARS reload? Pray to the troony gods the the tubes just refill themselves?

It uses a box because the rockets are smaller and there are only 6 of them. The HIMARS is largely unsuitable for rocket barrages.

If we were to believe Ukraine was too weak to contain the Russian menace, you know what we would do?
Send more weapons, and then even more, and if's not enough send our armies, and we wouldn't stop until Russia was no longer a threat to us.

Ukraine is currently losing. They don't have the ability to re-capture any lost territory (unless Russia leaves them first). In spite of that, arms deliveries have actually slowed down. Ukraine is desperately asking for lots more heavy weapons. HUNDREDS more systems like HIMARS. But, the response has only been to re-affirm Western support, but the material aid has slowed down with no sign of speeding up. Lend-Lease ensures Biden has the power to send whatever he wants with very few exceptions. 40 billion has been earmarked on top of all the other aid packages. And yet, where is it?

The Ukrainian military high command says that 90+% of requests for systems have been fulfilled. The people calling for "hundreds of systems" are political commentators that have jack shit to say about the process. It's impressive that you fell victim to Russian AND Ukrainian propaganda lmao

Listen here, glowBlack person. Most Westerners, whether they are American, German, or French, do not really care about Ukraine. France has openly suggested that Ukraine make concessions to Russia. German opinion is divided on whether Ukraine should be supported or urged to surrender. Americans are opposed to the government sending $40B to Ukraine when gas prices are at an all-time high. The Western mindset is to not care about Ukraine

I don't understand how people are so naive when it comes to politics. If a government department wants 5 billion they request 20 and haggle the government up to 4. If a nation needs 100, they ask for 1000 and get 100. If they only ask for 100 they get 10.

That's how all government departments work. Even private companies.

What is the purpose of a rocket barage? Wasting 3/4 of your expended munitions for zero effect. Sure it's a great weapon against civilians and conscripts, but once you slav monkeys figure out that you have to bring the munitions with you you will start to understand that kills are more valuable. The west has spent 70 years figure out how to slaughter the communist wave of massed conscripts and bomblets always make more sense than flinging huge barages that won't injure anyone.

                >16 ammo dumps in less then two weeks (and counting!)
Um, 9 last night (in one small area, not counting all of East Ukraine), 12 yesterday, about 15 in the 72 hours previous to that. We're way above 30 as of right now, and given the probability that not all have been reported it could be over 40 in the last 5 days. Cold be kissing up on 50.

Several of these have been huge depots. One of the ones last night looks like over a kiloton of explosives detonated at one point, and maybe twice(?) that over the course of several hours. That depot is still burning and exploding right now.

So, keep in mind it's not just the number of depots. Several of these have been huge, and included significant armor, troops, and fuel. One of these about three days ago was an entire base, including barracks, decommissioning an airfield, trucks, fuel, aircraft.

The difference is that in a controlled test you get basically unlimited tries and only show the good hits to the brass and the media.

            OR

You can do a couple of test shots and see where they land and just put the target there for the "real" test.

            OR

You can film the launch sequence and just cut it together with some explosives going off in whatever you're pretending to shoot at.

self-loading crane using a box that can be placed on the ground by general utility vehicles or even prepositioned in an area before the HIMARS arrives

any 2 1/2 ton truck with a crane or forklift nearby is a HIMARS reloading vehicle

note how that's a 4x4 FMTV truck carrying TWO PODS versus the 8x8 truck needed to load the smerch

meanwhile a single US 8x8 truck can carry 4 entire reloads totaling 25 rockets, twice that of the smerch 9T234-2 reloading vehicle

Pay attention to videos of Russian / Soviet MLRS systems firing. Notice how they almost always bounce around? That kills accuracy. Also, the generally poor quality of Russia's industrial base adds to this problem (ie, poor tolerances, inferior materials, poor consistency, etc). That's why their MLRS do wild scattershots instead of landing in a well-defined, small area.

There's probably not a large difference between reloading a M270 and Smerch. The HIMARS has only one pod so it's not at all comparable to the Smerch. The M270 is a better comparison.

M270 is still far superior at reloading than smerch

Also, the direct comparison with HIMARS is the Tornado. I don't know if those have appeared in Ukraine though.

LOL the HIMARS is widely regarded as a great rocket artillery system, the BM-30 smerch however is not. LOL

      Russia makes bigger explosions

Can Russia sustain their artillery offensives without building ammo dumps? Is it logistically possible to sustain a high rate of artillery without large intermediate ammo storages?

I hope the answer is no.

Also how close are they to running out of ammo reserves and need to manufacture new rounds?

HIMARS is unironically a big deal for this war.

It is worth noting that a M31A1 missile is half the price of a Javelin missile. The production line is still very active. Inventory is large. We have sent 7k Javelins to ukies. Duplicating that number for M31A1 might be enough to win the war outright.

      Anonymous

Honestly the peace time production rate is mostly just supposed to be enough to pay to keep the factory floor space reserved and machinery operational and workers hired incase they need to scale up.
Normally it just ran 1/3 manning 40 hours a week.
A good amount of military contract bloat is more upkeep to keep them employed and shit on standby

that’s not the general consensus. HIMARS is seeing huge successes while smerch and tornado aren’t seeing any success. People notice

isn't the smerch just a glorified grad?
how are they even comparable to himars?

      Anonymous

nah, the Smerch has guided munitions too but Russia simply does not have a lot of PGMs and they have already deployed a massive part of their total stock pre war. the HIMARS has a few major advantages logistically though. these are decades apart in ag however.

Pretty much. GLONASS is dogshit even when it isn't getting jammed out by their own EW sets. HIMARS can land itself on a tack every time, can't be jammed by a wayward sneeze, and the GMLRS rockets are standard. No comparison.
