Pancake LED light fixture.
Led closet light from home depot. Can get em keyless (controlled by switch) or keyed (controlled by pull chain). I install em all the time in people's closets and basements. If you want a recessed light, just get a 4"-6" led wafer light
replace it with a flat LED fixture with a diffuser. they have them at home depot. I figure you were like me and hated the idea of having to replace a whole fixture if the LED burns out- don't be. I was the same way and my contractor convinced me to just get pancakes instead of cans- I have had them for 10 years now and they are exactly the same as the day I got them.

The fake clear "Edison filament" bulbs with the LED rods inside are omnidirectional and a perfect replacement for the old incandescents. I've found they outlast the half-shaded modern LED bulbs ... Pretty much infinitely, too. Make sure they're 2700 kelvin warm white so you don't get the weird yellow or psycho white kind.
My house has a bunch of these old things. They were originally rated for four 60-watt bulbs. As LEDs are much cooler and pull less current, I thought I would be cheeky and put four ~3000 lumen bulbs in one. Worked just fine. Couldn't see shit it was so bright, though. I dropped it down to two bulbs and used ~1200 lumen bulbs in my other fixtures.

Look at round-white-flat fixtures. Cheap and mount over existing opening. You can get them LED or standard socket, any big box store carries multiple types. Install is less than 10 minutes if not a moron.
