If they built a square into the back corner then you could easily slide the whole thing into a gap and lock it open to transfer measurements directly without ever reading any numbers
i live in a metric country (there are many out there) so if someone held a gun to my head and said, "now you're going to do all your designs and calculations in feet instead of metres" decimal feet and feet only is what i would stick with so i don't really blame them. still, what fraction of an inch is equal to 0,1 feet i don't know. i know there are 12 inches in a foot so it's 1,2 inches but how you express 0,2 inch in an imperial fraction you tell me
actually learnt something new today, US customary is an even a bigger shitshow than i thought
[...] >decimal feet
what the frick
at that point why not use metric?
i'm guessing historical and practical reasons but in my opinion burger units are one big sunk cost fallacy. learning about decimal feet isn't doing my opinion any favours either
This is one of those things that you don't realise how much more convenient it is and how often it's useful until you try it. Only downsides is it doesn't have a clip (there is a holster available if that's your thing), the long shape or weight may be a hinderance to some (doesn't bother me), and it's not the longest at only 5m. I do have a cheap longer auto-locking tape if I need it but I don't personally remember the last time I did.
I'm not sure what that would achieve. The main advantages of the gatortape are taking inside measurements or measurements from a surface, and its ability to easily stand on its own pointing up for marking on walls.

See, I knew somebody had to figure this shit out. It's so obvious.
There are actually many tapes that are square, they'll have the length of the body engraved on them so you can add it to your measurement. The advantage of the gatortape is you don't need to add anything, it's a bit more accurate, and it has a sharp corner so it can measure up to shallow lips (the inside of a photo frame for example).
I have seen some tapes that are built to a metric spec and it will say <- 3-5/32" -> or something ridiculous. If they were made in USA they would pick a round number like 4" or 3".
My tape measure only has metric dimensions on it, but the length of the body is engraved with 2 3/4". I'm going to buy a new one just because of that, it's fricking annoying how they mixed their units.
>need new tape measure >go into aisle and grab one without really thinking >turns out it's this new meme shit called a leverlock >locks automatically and you release it by gripping the bottom part >only works for like a week and stops locking >irritating to use so just throw it into a drawer and forget about it until this thread >learned my lesson and just stick to the standard switch type now
how can you frick up something as simple as a tape measure? some product manager at Stanley probably had to shit out this moronic gimmick or else lose their job. turns out there's all kinds of new mechanisms and fancy systems that are supposed to be better somehow.
>be me >old tape measure died (the stopper broke so I can't lock it anymore) >go buy new tape measure >get cheapest one because "It's a tape measure, why do I need a fancy expensive one?" >It only gives imperial units, no centimeters
what the hell. I mostly use inches anyway but why are they so lazy they couldn't just print the cm on there too? I didn't even think to check because I just assumed it would have it. The cheapest shittiest rulers I ever had in school still included metric on them.
No, not really.
nah, 3 inches is fine.
no, i don't. except for the fact that i own 3 of those so i guess that's more than just one if them.
If they built a square into the back corner then you could easily slide the whole thing into a gap and lock it open to transfer measurements directly without ever reading any numbers
big square would never allow this
don't get me started on the angle gauge cartel
Yeah, actually. Mostly I need the 10ths scale.
Only engineer scales I have seen have decimal feet.
Yeah, the second side has tenths of a inch. Shit's weird but it's all my company uses.
Decimal feet is the greatest fight me
they unironically sell and use decimal feet tapes in the US? converting 0.1 feet to inches doesn't seem exactly ideal
Everything at the company I work at is in decimal feet. I blame the engineers.

NGM

aldrich engineer tape measures
Yes.
I bet that's great for your dressmaking homosexual
you must be american to think a 100 foot measure is for dress making
> Fat Max
is there a joke to be made here?
It’s not about hitting the back, it’s about raising hell on the sides
I only use Mitutoyo.
Anything else belongs in the trash can.

just put a 10cm/in mark and then add for precise dimensions
simple addition shouldn't be beyond you
all joking aside looks nice if you need a LOT of measurements, surely faster than my solution
I'm not sure what that would achieve. The main advantages of the gatortape are taking inside measurements or measurements from a surface, and its ability to easily stand on its own pointing up for marking on walls.
it would achieve taking precise inside dimensions
so this is beyond you?
make 10in mark one way
then measure the other way to the mark
as both of those and you have perfect inside measurement
*add both of those measurements
Sure, that works if the inside measurement is against a surface and it's okay to mark that surface
pencil and rubber eraser

what the frick kinda piece of shit chinkshit tool is that
Oh sweet, there it is, just like I described
See, I knew somebody had to figure this shit out. It's so obvious.

Makes sense, the rest of the world is metric so that would be the priority

Autist
>use 20 feet on your 25 feet tape
>it doesn't go back in
i deal in 100s of feet, so, yes, I need more
3" ain't gonna cut it, sorry hun.
actually, i need less
>folding ruler
My carpenter overalls have a pocket on the leg for this.
yes
You guys are so 2000-late
>let me guess, you need more?
Yes.
I work in flooring and after years of playing with rubbish, this is the best measuring kit. See pic.
Idiocracy tape measure, when the zoomers all
Swap to these nobody will be able to read a tape measure
It will be the whole starrett micrometers at garage sales and thrift stores or used as c-clamps all over again

These are good for hobby wargaming and nothing else
I need less
I only use bananna's and quarters.
much less
I love those little arbor presses!

Only been using it a few months so don't know about the longevity factor yet, but really liking the Milwaukee Auto-Lock.
