Legal to gunsmith classic firearms?

I looked high and low but never got a straight answer. I want to get into gunsmithing just to craft my own firearms with no intention to resell. One being a c96. I searched if its legal to smith one since its just a semi automatic 9mm handgun. However, I cant find anything saying I can or cannot. Anyone know what the deal is?

It’s legal as you’re not intending to sell it as long as you’re not violating other state laws regarding detachable magazine capacity etc

maybe start with something a little more simple than the fricking kraftwerk that a C96 is.

But otherwise you're fine to make unlicensed copies of things for personal use.

I dont intend to jump to the c96. Especially since i have zero experience. But i also dont intend on buying a used one covered with rust and rotting wood for $5k.

      >I want to get into gunsmithing just to craft my own firearms with no intention to resell. One being a c96.
      Lol, good luck.

      >I searched if its legal to smith one since its just a semi automatic 9mm handgun.
With the stock it would be considered a short barrel rifle (the exception under the law there only applies to original guns), so you'd need to go through the process of submitting paperwork to manufacture an SBR and pay the ATF $200. Otherwise you''d be fine so long as your state doesn't have any laws you might run afoul of.

Figured that. My gun laws here are pretty leanient especially to prior military like myself, so i doubt it'll be a struggle.

You don;t even fricking know why you want one. You neither have any skill talent or ability or appreciation or love of antique arms yet here you fricking are bullshitting on about making a broomhandle like a spastic. The best bit is you don't even really know why people want them to begin with. Go buy a reproduction 'medieval' sword to hang on your bedroom wall but ask your mother first.

Do you carry a cloth with you to wipe the cum that leaks from your ass or do you just leave a trail of slime like a slug wherever you go? What you are saying is you would like turbo fake and gay antique guns pretending to be the real article because you can't afford real antique guns or care for them or understand why people want to own them, so you would like to make antique guns but you don't know how. Would you ever frick off.

don't listen to these no gunz anon. if you have the money. enjoy it, even if you frick up the firearm. do what you enjoy.

That actually is the problem, you're just too stupid to realize it. The C96 is an incredibly complex mechanical design that has a massive amount of finicky machining. The P08 Luger is the same way. Liking them is cool and all, but expecting to build one from scratch is very nearly the Everest of gunsmithing. This is among the most advanced gunsmithing projects of all time.

Should be legal just get the tools needed for gunsmithing and manufacturing.

federally, anything you can legally own you can also legally manufacture. commie states may impose additional restrictions.

I will add that the pic in OP depicts what the ATF considers a short-barrel rifle, which you'll need a Form 1 tax stamp for if you want to make it (while complying with unconstitutional laws).

ackshully the ATF specifically exempts C96s with the shoulder stock from the NFA. But that's only for original examples, not reproductions.

I forgot about that, but you do have to keep in mind that ATF opinion letters have zero force of law and they can go back on their word at any time.

It's not an opinion letter. It's published in the big book of exemptions.

Yes, it's published in the big book of exemptions. Congress has specifically forbidden the ATF from further restricting what they classify as C&R and exemptions. Of course, congressional oversight doesn't stop them from doing other shady stuff, but in this case it's a little stronger than just an opinion letter.

Repro stocks on original guns are fine. Stocks on repro guns like OP is talking about aren't.

            Correct.

This is false. Repro stocks in the style of the original are fine.

Here is the excerpt from the big book mentioned. It plainly states "original" stock.

Frick all the naysayers....everyone has to start somewhere!
Law says you can make a pistol for yourself, None of it is in violation of ANY law until you put the barrel on and make it a functioning "firearm"
start at the beginning and frick shit up, make mistakes, ruin some cutters and materials, frick up months of hard work....hate yourself. Love the process

The beginning is building a Traditions flintlock kit, not going straight for a project that would make a master machinist cry.
