Some buddies and I want to go wilderness camping with our gear in some deep woods. I would like to avoid people who will have questions and create some sort of hassle. These buddies are spread across WI, IL, and IN.

Northern Wisconsin is very chill especially around Rhinelander.
Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan are your best bets

As someone who has had the Forest Rangers and state police called on then several times at different /k/ meets this literally never happens and you are making up scenarios in your head to get mad at. They politely pop in, make sure no one is shooting at trees or setting off fireworks and everyone is collecting their trash, and then leave. You are just an angry autist upset he doesn't have any friends to LARP in the woods with.

that's exactly why I came to /k/ asking for assistance. I see state parks list thousands of acres but then all of their maps only include camp sites, bbq areas, short hiking trails. I want to go into dense forest parking on some abandoned logging trail and hike for miles. never seeing another person.
