Largest military losses inflicted by one or few men

>Be 25-year-old Doku Dzhantemirov
>Russians are attacking your beloved Chechnya again
>Sitting on a hill with just outside of Khankala
>Largest helicopter you've ever seen in your life - the Mi-26 - flies into view
>Fricking thing was designed to carry dozens of troops and tons of equipment
>You have never seen so juicy a target
>Upon seeing it land, you notice almost 150 Russian troops, real Russians and not just Kadyrov's dogs, pile in
>With troops and equipment taken into account, they are two times over capacity
>You ready your Igla as it begins to take flight
>Fire a missile worth a few thousand dollars at it
>HIT!
>Despite the hit, it manages to make a controlled landing due to the fact that it's a 33-ton heli that was struck with a basic b***h MANPADS
>It lands intact but on fire
>In the middle of a fricking minefield
>Several dozen soldiers are wounded but many survive the initial crash
>Stumble out into the minefield and get BTFO
>Fire in the heli worsens, nearby fire trucks can't reach them because of the mines
>127 Russian soldiers ultimately die as they can't be reached
>You watch the whole event unfold, make a break for the trees with your boys having inflicted one of the worst losses of Russian life in the entire Chechen conflict
>In the immediate aftermath, officers from Lieutenant Colonels of the unit who packed their troops into an overcrowded Mi-26 all the way up to the Generals in charge of aviation are dismissed, fined or even arrested
>You get caught in 2004
>You are a legal combatant who engaged a target within the confines of the law and are not a member of any Islamist terror groups or insurgencies
>It's early enough in the war that it's still an internationally recognized war between nations
>Despite this, you receives moronic charges like "banditry" and "murder with special cruelty"
>Receive a life sentence because the Russians are buttblasted
Are there any other stories of a single man causing such damage in a single act?

One of the German machinegunners at Omaha Beach clocked up somewhere between 1000 to 2000 kills that morning.

It's one thing to destroy a vehicle full of people like in the OP or push a button and delete a giant chunk of the landscape and the 10,000 men inhabiting it () but to actually gun down individual troops would be on a whole other level.

Reality. The Beast of Omaha, Heinrich Severloh, manned an MG 42 and fired on approaching American troops with the machine gun and two Karabiner 98k rifles; while a sergeant whom he did not know, kept him supplied with ammunition from a nearby ammo bunker until 15:30. He fired over 13,500 rounds with the machine gun and 400 with the rifles, claiming the lives of somewhere between 100 to 2000 Allied soldiers.

The barrels of his machine guns (he went through several of them) went so hot that they started small fires in the dry grass in front of his position. When he ran out of regular ammo, he resorted to using anti-aircraft rounds, which made his position visible to US vessels which promptly proceeded to try and dislodge him with their naval guns. To no avail as he just kept his position and continued firing until he ran out of ammunition completely.

Sorry, that was a typo on my part, lacking a zero. the Estimated kill-count is between 1000 and 2000, not 100 and 2000.

            Anonymous

            >2000 Allied soldiers
            lmao
Anon, the total number of KIA on Omaha beach was around 2,400. If this fella shot 80% of them, then the other gunners were most remarkably inaccurate.

And we have zero proof that he was responsible for all of them, save his own estimate.
What happened is the same for all AA gunners and pilots throughout history, and the reason why despite the best of ability and intention, aerial claims were tremendously inflated. He fired his weapon, saw people falling, and thought that he was the one who hit them. Meanwhile other weapons were shooting at them as well - so how would anyone know which one actually scored the kill?

By their nature artillery is more effective than machine-guns, being more efficient in delivering lethal fragments over a wider beaten zone and being especially effective on a beach with no overhead cover at all. Artillery is estimated in general to inflict 50% of casualties. At Omaha, German howitzers hidden inland were not knocked out and fired off all their ammo as well. There were also as many as eighty machine-guns at Omaha, and mortars; many of these were destroyed in the initial bombardment, but many remained in operation and had to be knocked out over the course of the day.

Once again, Severloh could not possibly know if it was his bullets or another MG's bullets or artillery shells scoring the kills.

That is why his claim is highly, highly unlikely to be true to that extent. 100, I buy for sure. 1,000? No way.

The 1,000 or 2,000 that keep being quoted (and debated) most likely came out of an interview situation he didn't feel comfortable with. This interview took place in the 1980s when he became more and more known to the international public. The interviewer asked about the number of people that Severloh killed, and he didn't want to answer this question, as he never really tried to find an estimate of the numbers himself. These events had been haunting him for the past 40 years, and he had not talked about absolute numbers before, as he just didn't want to discuss it. The interviewer kept pressing on, repeating the question. Severloh felt increasingly uncomfortable with the situation, then finally gave in and said: Likely 1,000, maybe 2,000, without further detailed analysis or justification. Then the interviewer was somehow pleased, and that was just it.

Severloh had nightmares for the rest of his life from that day at Omaha.

            As for this,
            >He fired over 13,500 rounds with the machine gun

Machine-gunners are trained to pick a target and then give it a 1 or 2 second burst. The MG42 fires about 20 rounds a second. Assuming absolutely PERFECT aim with PERFECT 1-second bursts, Severloh would have shot a maximum of 13,500 / 20 = 675 soldiers.

Nobody's that perfect. His real score is probably something like 1/4th that figure. And that's being very generous, considering the other points i raised above. And the fact that the ratio of KIA to WIA was about 1:2.

To no avail as he just kept his position and continued firing until he ran out of ammunition completely.

      >Vasily Mikhailovich Blokhin, chief executioner for the NKVD, is reported to have personally shot and killed 7,000 of the condemned, some as young as 18, from the Ostashkov camp at Kalinin prison, over 28 days in April 1940.[29][38]
Only counts because most of the prisoners were polish military though.

Not sure that should count, it isn't actively caused by him. By that metric you could also count the arms and munitions manufacturers.

    Hans-Ulrich Rudel, Stuka Ace

Rudel flew 2,530 combat missions on the Eastern Front of World War II. The majority of these were undertaken while flying the Junkers Ju 87, although 430 were flown in ground-attack variants of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190. He was credited with the destruction of 519 tanks, severely damaging the battleship Marat, as well as sinking a cruiser (incomplete and heavily damaged Petropavlovsk), a destroyer (the Leningrad-class destroyer Minsk) and 70 landing craft. Rudel also claimed to have destroyed more than 800 vehicles of all types, over 150 artillery, anti-tank or anti-aircraft positions, 4 armored trains, as well as numerous bridges and supply lines. Rudel was also credited with 9 aerial victories, 7 of which were fighter aircraft and 2 Ilyushin Il-2s. He was shot down or forced to land 30 times due to anti-aircraft artillery, was wounded five times and rescued six stranded aircrew from enemy-held territory.

Dick Best, essentially sank the Jap carrier Akagi singlehandedly. Had he missed, decent odds the battle of Midway could have ended in a draw

While he no doubt was highly experienced, his kill claims are patently absurd.

        Anonymous

Not at all. If you kill 2 vehicles every sortie, and fly 1 sortie a day, in 14 months you will have Rudel's score.

A-10s within Desert Storm averaged 0.5 kills per day, and compared to WW2 combat on the Eastern Front, far fewer combat vehicles were involved. The Soviets were also far from uber-competent, and tended to bunch up.

And this is only using averages. Rudel, obviously, is the most extreme of outliers.

        Anonymous

His kill claims are mostly confirmed and match the incredible number of sorties he flew. He lost his leg trying to pick up a downed comrade behind enemy lines. After revalidation he got back into the wienerpit and continued flying combat missions

The issue I take is largely with the tank claims. Allied examination of ground strikes was that a low-single digit number actually hit their targets, and a similarly low number of tanks losses could actually be accredited to the aircraft. What I think is alot more likely than him having anime protagonist levels of tank killing prowess is:
          >German army advancing
          >Rudel drops bomb near group of Russian tanks
          >German army passes group of broken Russian tanks, Rudel gets credit
          >tanks were broken down before Rudel ever bombed them, or just abandoned by a panicked crew

Air defense with limited resources is difficult but not impossible, hitting helicopters and especially fast moving fighter jets requires carefully preparation and ambush. Because hitting a helicopter with a MANPAD, let alone a fighter jet with a Stinger or something like that, is pretty difficult. You need a good view and skill to make the shot.

Riflemen can also concentrate small arms fire on a single target or successfully engage helicopters with machine guns.

Yes, it is possible to hit a moving jet with small arms fire, just very difficult. Meanwhile, a Stinger is computer guided, pretty expensive though. Not nearly as expensive as say a Javelin or Patriot missile.

        You mean this redneck?

        >Thomas Wilson Ferebee was born on a farm outside Mocksville, North Carolina, as the third of eleven children raised in a Methodist family. In 1935, at age 17, he attended Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC. Talented in athletics since childhood, he earned awards in track, basketball, and football. After training for a small position with the Boston Red Sox and not making the team, he joined the Army.

        >A knee injury kept him from service in the infantry but he was accepted into flight training. After two years of flight school, Ferebee was assigned as a bombardier in the European theater, completing more than 60 bombing missions. In the summer of 1944, he was recruited by Colonel Paul Tibbets to be part of the 509th Composite Group which was formed to drop the atomic bomb.

          >The Norden Mk. XV, known as the Norden M series in U.S. Army service, is a bombsight that was used by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) and the United States Navy during World War II, and the United States Air Force in the Korean and the Vietnam Wars. It was an early tachometric design that directly measured the aircraft's ground speed and direction, which older bombsights could only estimate with lengthy manual procedures. The Norden further improved on older designs by using an analog computer that continuously recalculated the bomb's impact point based on changing flight conditions, and an autopilot that reacted quickly and accurately to changes in the wind or other effects.

                >The Potsdam Declaration, or the Proclamation Defining Terms for Japanese Surrender, was a statement that called for the surrender of all Japanese armed forces during World War II. On July 26, 1945, United States President Harry S. Truman, United Kingdom Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Chairman of China Chiang Kai-shek issued the document, which outlined the terms of surrender for the Empire of Japan, as agreed upon at the Potsdam Conference.

                >The ultimatum stated that, if Japan did not surrender, it would face "prompt and utter destruction."

                >Chiang Kai‐shek (31 October 1887 – 5 April 1975), also known as Jiang Zhongzheng and Jiang Jieshi, was a Chinese politician, revolutionary, and military leader who served as the leader of the Republic of China (ROC) and the Generalissimo from 1928 to his death in 1975 – until 1949 in Mainland China and from then in Taiwan. Following the Kuomintang's defeat by the Chinese Communist Party in the Chinese Civil War, he continued to lead the ROC government in Taiwan until his death.

Taiwan upholds the ideal of the republic and does not persecute Christians like the Chinese Communist Party choose to. But the bombing of Nagasaki actually killed a ton of Japanese Catholics and underground Japanese Christians, who had hidden their faith for thousands of years since the Portugeuse persecution and martyrdom.
