Kyiv

Can we take a moment to appreciate how utterly doomed the Russians were when they tried to capture Kyiv, a city 40 times bigger than Bakhmut?
Even worse, imagine trying to capture it now that Ukraine has solidified the Western support and prepared its army to the point of being able to carry out offensives. In Russia's current state, it has become utterly impenetrable for Russian forces. The only way they could even destroy it anymore would be with nukes.

Anon, at the start it wasn't defended like a frontline city. If you were able to destroy the reservist units and few professional ones defending it, you'd be able to more or less roll through it. You might lose some vehicles every now and then to ambushes or RPG hunter-killer teams but it wouldn't be that difficult. Think Fallujah 0.25 instead of Stalingrad.

Of course this all depends on actually getting into the city in the first place. If you get taken out 15 km from it by artillery units you, in a drunken haze, forgot to suppress then you have bigger concerns.

Now? It'd take a NATO armored/mechanized division to get more than 5 km into Kyiv. It's just too hardened.

Oh forgot to mention, there's a RUSI (I think) report talking about the Russian plan to take Kyiv. They were intending to take the city conventionally, put it under lockdown then use SOF forces operating from boltholes to assassinate anyone connected to the Ukrainian government. We would have seen weeks or months of actual civilians getting gunned down by BTRs for the crime of going to get milk without a permit/walking down an unauthorized path (the authorized paths aren't published), with rapes and other crimes going completely unpunished since the Russians didn't give a frick and the Ukrainian police were dead. It would have made Bucha look like a particularly bad day in Chicago.

        >use SOF forces operating from boltholes to assassinate anyone connected to the Ukrainian government.
They kind of tried to do this from day one on a small scale, there were Russian special forces holed up in a Russian Orthodox monastery in central Kiev since before the invasion and they tried to stir up shit when the invasion happened, but they never achieved anything substantial and were neutralised relatively quickly.

Territorial defence was formed since day 1, people were mass-making Molotov wienertails in their apartments/on streets and were ready to throw them out of the balconies, main roads got blocked and military checks were every 1-2 km, SBU was raiding suspicious appartments where sabotage groups could have been located. It really wouldn't be that easy.

Anon TDF isn't going to do shit if the actual professional units are dead, there's no artillery and the Russians are dropping any building that fires at them.

Well, good luck putting down every building in a capital city with a population of 3 mils. I don't even know how much would it take if Bakhmut slowed them for 9 months

That was the thing that gave me huge respect for the Ukies. They weren't gonna take it, you saw mom's taking their kids to school with AKs over their shoulder. Grandma and grandpa making molotovs. Everyone was doing their part, luckily it also turned out the Russians were morons and the Ukrainian military was able to unfrick things rather quickly.

Kiev is so big I honestly wonder if Russia would run out of shells, and wear out all their barrels, before they could give it the full Grozny treatment.

And Grozny was coming out of the tail end of the Soviet Union so their stocks were still somewhat full.

The Chechens also didn't really have any appreciable numbers of aircraft, armour, or modern AT weapons.
And Kiev has like 10 times the population of Grozny. They weren't taking it no matter what

Even if Ukraine recovers its territory by force, it's impossible for Ukraine to force Russia on deals such as border demilitarization or war reparation. They will stand strong and will attack Kiev the next chance they get to do so.

In 1968 Soviet VDV captured Prague first day of the war.

      Anonymous

No they didn't. VDV took airport. Mechanized infantry supported by tanks took Prague.
Also, in 1968 there was no armed resistance and Soviets used over 600k troops to to capture a country with quarter-third of the population and about on eight the land mass of Ukraine.

        Anonymous

        They did.
First day after airport VDV landed transport aircraft with truck and APC and their mechanized columns entered Prague.
They took central government building and arrested entire Czechoslovakian government.
Also they took ministry of internal affairs HQ, MOD HQ, Central Bank, TV and Radio HQ, postal HQ and all bridges. They didn't put city fully under control, yes. But all central government institutions where capture by VDV and central Czechoslovakian government seize to exists before the end of the first day.

When we first saw they were yolo'ing into Kiev the first thing I did was compare Russia's force composition to what Germany/Italy/Romania needed to take Odessa in WW2, a city 1/10th the size (at that time) and
then I knew dis was gonna be gud.

Not only that, but as you can see on the map there's basically only couple (4) of highways that are going to the city at the north-western direction, while everything else is covered with dense forests. Bucha has 1 and Irpin has 1 highway.
Also it's so ironic that our guys were using the same natural and artificial defensive barriers that were used by the soviets while defending kyiv during ww2, so ironic

How's the morale in the city?

        Anonymous

Morale is good. Interestingly our goverment choose this tactic of media silence on operations, atleast for the first couple of days, which has upsides and downsides, there's a joke even, here's the translation

        >You are a typical subscriber to military channels
        >You saw a failed attack by the AFU
        >You've been walking around all day like you've eaten shit, your nervous system can't take it anymore

        >A neighbor, Aunt Zina, did not know about any attack, she watched the channel Trukha Ukraine 24 Online Valery Zaluzny Hetman. The army spokesman said that everything was fine, Aunt Zina walked around in a good mood and healthy psyche
So which one of you is an idiot?

            >which one of you is an idiot?
The guy who watched the military channel without realizing that the media output is inevitably going to be biased in favor of Russians during opsec silence for the umpteenth time.

doesen't matter, when you see destroyed bradleys and 2a6, of the brigade specifically crafted for assault operations, as their debut opening - it's well not great... but after analyzing apparently our guys were competent, it's just that not every assault will be sucessfull...

anyway from what i see in tg channells rn - there's full TEMPO TEMPO TEMPO going on, so pay attention

    >Can we take a moment to appreciate how utterly doomed the Russians were when they tried to capture Kyiv, a city 40 times bigger than Bakhmut?
Even after the USSR was gone there were moronic vatniks spamming here that they could invade western Europe and conquer European cities like Vienna, Hamburg, Warsaw Munich etc etc with populations over a million with a 30% firearms owner rate (so cities with more armed civililians then there were troops in teh Russian ground forces). It's hard to wrap your head around the fact they sincerely believe this shit about Russia stronk until you realise they have almost no grasp of reality or the world just living in a Russian linguistic bubble controlled by the state and get a terrible education in Putins Russia, rural schools are falling apart with no heating, no double glazing, crumbling cement etc. Many of the have no concept of what a city like Munich or Amsterdam, Brussels or Nantes is even like. The only places in Russia that even come close are the centre of Moscow and St. Petersburg. Many Russian small towns and villages don't even have running tap water but have to get water from a fricking well like 19th century vodka hobbits but in snow and the bucket is shitty Chinese plastic and the well is a mile away. No running hot water, no sewers, no local doctor, corrupt cops who you pay not to be mobilised or who's kids you have to give free shit to to not be arrested, schools with timber sheet blocking the broken windows and no running water because all the pipes are burst. These people really do live on the equivalent of 500-300 dollars a month (the average is 600 but the higher wage skew is all where the autocracy lives in Moscow and St. Petersberg and the average plummets outside). Unlike many here I have been there and its actually pretty horrific in some places, people living in shacks with rubbish piles out the back, trying to sell you their children for money for booze and drugs, junkies

They thought they were gonna crack a few skulls, rape a bit of strange, steal a TV or two and instead they ended up trying to breathe through fist-sized holes in their lungs. I just think of them sitting there, gasping like a fish out of water, wondering why they came. That the locals just let wild animals eat them is even better.
