Not a big issue really. The Euro/NATO market got involved into a war and realized that standardizing helps greatly. Yeah the Koreans lost their chances there. But now all the countries outside NATO are last in line for getting Euro/NATO equipment and might have to wait a decade for deliveries. Where better for them to turn now than to South Korea?

      Anonymous

      >and might have to wait a decade for deliveries
Not if Italy gets a Leopard factory as the rumours suggest. Czechia should get one as well, and all three operating would dramatically increase the supply of Leos.

        Anonymous

Building new factories take time and just the existing orders are going through the roof. And the factories are facing insane demands for parts at this time too. If I was say Indonesia, I would not hope to be a top priority for a new order now.

      Anonymous

What countries would that be though?
South Americans are broke and never bought many tanks anyway. Japan has their own tank and Taiwan is going for the Abrams. India buys Russian and Pakistan Chinese. Israel has their own tank as well while the rest of MENA either buys Russian or American. I guess they could try getting the Gulf monarchies to buy the K2 over more Abrams and Leclerc.

      Anonymous

Korea needs to make a big push into the Indian market. Not even joking here. India is a big country with a rather large army and need for tanks/IFVs. The only reason India has been buying Russian all this time is their political elite is still mad at the West for British colonialism. South Korea meanwhile is a former victim of colonialism themselves while also a mostly neutral party in world affairs. The poor performance of T-90s in Ukraine coupled with Russia's need for more T-90s themselves and economic troubles means right now would be the best time to try and sway India into buying a different tank. Last but not least India's most likely to face war in mountainous regions just like South Korea making the K2 an even better fit for India (and much better than the T-90).

India has over 4K T-90 and T-72 variants in service. Just think of how much Korea could make if even half of those were to be replaced by K2.

          Anonymous

I don’t think the lack of boldness was an issue. I think the war in Ukraine just screwed them over a bit. It shifted the focus from new tank but maybe a bit cheaper from very far away to new tank but quickly and without new logistics issues.

            Anonymous

Ukraine would happily buy such a tank, if South Korea would put in the effort. With its anti-landmine ability? It might as well be a done deal.

              Anonymous

I was talking about the European market rather than Ukraine proper. Ukraine is happy about any kind of tank they can get. South Korea has a lot of good reasons not to rush into Ukraine.
              >With its anti-landmine ability
This one for example might be a double edged sword. If it performs as expected then it’s a good marketing pitch. If by some unfortunate circumstance a Ukrainian K2 gets blown up on a land mine it’d be a marketing nightmare. You just know Vatniks would spam pics of it all across the internet and the entire anti-mine capability would be questioned by potential customers.
There’s also the entire issue of Ukraine being a tank producer country. Right now they’re getting 30-40 years old Leopard variants. If they got their hands on a K2 they could straight steal some concepts from it, integrate them into a new T-84 variant and try selling it on foreign markets as a cheaper alternative.

Perhaps though they could launch a JOINT feature with South Korea? South Korea could use Ukraine as a launching point for its own tanks, and in exchange helping Ukraine develop its own indigenous tank models.

"You scratch my back, I scratch yours" scenario.

They already have Poland for that don't they?
Also I believe Rheinmetall has beat them to it since their CEO was pretty open about ideas of opening factories in Ukraine post-war.

Personally? If I was Ukraine, I'd get everybody who would pay up to build factories inside my country. The more MICs set up shop, the more valuable my country becomes to their own war efforts (and the less likely I'll get invaded by Russia).

Italy operate home-designed Ariete main battle tanks. 30 year old platform (with some upgrades), but the platform is obsole and out of production and they are the only country to use them. Current warfare show that this is a weakness. Not to mention that they are Italian-made...

Doesn't change the fact that you're a tourist with no knowledge of tanks if you did you'd know these facts.

                1. the upper front plate is literally just spaced armor, the hull has no based composite, only heavy NERA that is added it later upgrades, and that comes at the cost of mobility

                2. The turret armor is so outdated that even slavshit 3bm60 and probably even fricking 3bm42 could penetrate the cheeks.

                3. the gun and fcs are fine tbh

      >Hopefully our engineers pull their head out od their ass and make a competent home-grown tank next time.
Often it's not the engineers' fault. Time, money, and especially politics are fantastically huge limiting factors. Stop blaming engineers, they're always doing their best. Blame the fricking managers, bean counters, and decision makers.

Poland did get some K2 delivered last week iirc. They’re also supposed to get an entire factory which should produce a local variant with some very nice features the K2 lacks otherwise. But as time goes on the K2PL starts resembling a K2M more and more.

        Anonymous

Wouldn't be surprised if batlics are gonna buy some polish made K2's. Norway, Estonia and Finland have K9's too so they could get spare parts and new ones from poland.

          Anonymous

Norway already decided to go with the Leo 2A7 iirc. Finland also operates Leopards so it’s likely cheaper for them to simply upgrade to a newer standard.

The only thing any Norwegian said on the matter was some general complaining over purchasing tanks in the first place. He didn’t want neither K2 nor Leo 2 but wanted to spend the money on cruise missiles instead.

We knew, they knew, everybody knew that Leos will shit on every russian zigger and the crew will only receive minor injuries, yet german politicians were afraid that muh bad reputation because of destroyed leos.
