do they need a nuclear carrier to harass the US up to guam and Singapore?

Arguably, yes. Their current setup basically allows them to operate (in peacetime) for up to a month before needing resupply. That's a pretty short leash. Now they could resupply while underway, but that is no small feat (especially during wartime) and theat makes them much easier to trac and counter.

In short, their carriers are meant for patroling their own shores or maybe going out as far as Taiwan or SCS "islands."

Give credit where it’s due, this is actually the better idea than China forming an inexperienced Blue Water navy and then trying to learn the craft of power projection.
China’s entire military strategy is regional hegemony, which China has more experience in than LARPing like they’re an equivalent to US naval power.

Yeah. The key to beating the US for them in luring them close. They have all those small missile boats and an absolutely comic number of MLRS systems, most of which can fire anti-ship missiles.

Fighting the US far away is a losing strategy.

This tracks, there was an article a while back arguing that China has been heavily influenced by Imperial Germany in its naval strategy, in which it wants a navy that is centered around its region and the islands in the SCS that can function as a sheltered area for its navy to operate in while hoping the USN will have to divide itself and be away from support.

for up to a week before needing resupply*

That’s one heck of an Achilles heel.
Assuming the war lasts two weeks, Chang is going to need to get him a drummer and some oarsmen.

This is fine, I don't want to think about how environmentally devastating a true Chinese blue water navy would be.

I'm confused, is the J-35 the carrier version of the J-31 or the export version? I thought it was the carrier version but then I see talk about Pakistan ordering them and that doesn't make sense.

I do wonder if Iran might get them some day. Is it STOVL?

It seems that they are going like the F-35, J-35 will get a navy and a air force variant. FC-31 was an unpolished prototype/demonstrator and has changed a lot since.

I think the J-35 is the one they're gonna use on the carrier and J-31 is the export version.

If it is STOVL, imagine seeing Iranian J-31s taking off from Iran's ridiculous moronic oil tanker "carrier." lol

I really hope the US can pressure China not to sell to Iran. Because between Arab pilots and operational incompetence and brinkmanship there, I could definitely see a poorly piloted F-15 eating its first aerial loss to some Chinese BVR launched off the J-31. I want the girl to retire with her record in tact, and the Saudis got her shot down by fricking Iranian monkey model SAMs sent to Yemen already.

NTA, but didn't Saudi Arabia also wanted the J-31? They even want it the final assembly to be there.

It wasn't shot down. A wing was blown off, but it was able to return to base.

I could reasonably believe if you if changs ever demonstrated any ounce of innovation. As it stands the land empire needing its ocean navy reeks off new rich prestige complex combined with mindlessly copying the burgers

For taiwan the mainland is more then enough to house all of the missiles and planes they ever need to attack it
