          >The bigger issue is them driving up the price of everything, starting with housing. This would be a problem even if it were all conservatives moving in.
Blaming the carpetbaggers is missing the target, and I say this as a Southern Appalachian who loves to blame Californians for just about everything. The glee I've experienced as Californians finally got all the water they've been crying for this winter was pure kino and a blessing from Poseidon.

The correct target is the establishment which allows corporations, investors, the Chinese, etc. to buy up properties whenever the market crashes or dips, then convert them all into BnBs, upscale condos, etc. as current trends dictate, or just let them sit empty. Carpetbagging is going to keep happening so long as housing is a functionally unregulated commodity and a source of "residual income" and maximized profits for parasitic landlords, be they individual Baby Boomers or major Chinese corporations.

There's also the ever-stagnating wage to consider. If people literally cannot afford to live somewhere, they'll leave. There have been a few cases in the US of smaller upscale/exclusive towns/communities accidentally forgetting to leave any affordable housing nearby where the peasants who'll serve their needs can live.

I agree with what you are saying about the root cause of it being a general problem, not just a lefty state one.

However, I do think a big part of it has to be attributed to the local politics of the states they are fleeing. The places that are bleeding population the most are leftist states and the ones that are gaining are red ones. It is these blue states that are the most prohibitively expensive, while the red ones are managing to remain cheaper. There is population density to take into account too, as density correlates with migration too. But Texas and Florida are the states receiving the most migrants and they have some of the biggest population centres in America.

              Anonymous

See, that's the really insidious thing about Californians fleeing to other states: Both progressive social policies and conservative fiscal practices are to blame. Despite being a deeply blue state socially, California's real estate market is as fiscally conservative as they come.

California is the worst of both worlds. It's as greedy, corrupt, and intensely capitalistic as the worst Republican caricatures, while at the same time being the woke nexus of the US.

Yet there is beautiful land there, and good people. It's just all overshadowed by the moronation.

#1: implement a rule similar to this: https://www.iamexpat.nl/housing/real-estate-news/all-homes-amsterdam-under-512000-euros-must-be-occupied-owners

#2: Create a tariff on real estate which adjusts depending on which states the buyers are from, and hence where they get their income from. Example, a house in Montana would have a huge markup for someone previously from Cali, but none of that markup for a native Montana citizen

The park is pretty much closed in the winter, or he doesn't wanna fight crowds/traffic or he doesn't want to deal with entry permits. Most people don't feel like dealing with tourists in the park and stick to national forest.

nah. Glacier is open. Going to the Sun road is open in the winter. A campground is open and all back country sites are open....they even have some groomed X-country ski trails

yea, you can get to agpar but going to the sun has been closed for months. the x country skiing is great, though. I live north of seeley lake so I don't bother going up to GNP for it.

Not only is it closed in winter due to avalanches (this happens every single year since the road was completed in the 30's), this year they are doing construction all along the section from Apgar to the Avalanche Creek trailhead, so the only real sections that are open is a very tiny section along St. Mary lake.
          t. Lives in the Flathead Valley, and sick of dealing with tourists like you shitting up the area and not even knowing what is open, and then pitching a sissyfit because you morons are too stupid to understand what National Forests are and you all congregate in the tourist traps.

Lol, it's amazing how people think leftist are fleeing blue states, Most of those people are still in denial that their beloved ideology has taken their once great states into a nose dive.
It's actually the conservatives who are fleeing.

Democrat political strategist starting noticing since COVID through voter registrations that a lot more conservatives have been leaving blue states than liberals. While this made California more blue, There are solid indications that Texas may have gotten more red and the left is worried because a lot of people are also moving from darker blue states like New York to lighter blue states like Pennsylvanian.

Complaining about the consequences of our own system—a system without which we wouldn't even be here in the first place—is peak irony, that's all.

Also, the natives didn't devise that system, didn't ask for it, never benefited from it, and fought it as best they could, but still suffered consequences much worse than woke, BLM-worshipping Californian yuppies shitting up the cabin down the road.

In short, you reap what you sow, and we have no right to complain.

Do you think the injuns could've retained their way of life forever? No, it's impossible even if they retained ownership of land they'd be westernised like they are now. Do you think the current generation will fight off AI and robotics taking jobs? No, it's impossible, companies are already earmarking those expenses. Human history is about everybody getting screwed and everything getting worse, even the Ancient Greeks referred to their primitive Golden Age where they didn't have to put up with the shit they had in the city

Competition sucks ass, beauty or morality is hardly a factor in competition, that's why no matter how hard we try, America is going to end up like Europe, India, or China someday. All the "wilderness areas" that currently exist in America is a very temporary blessing and you should enjoy them, just like the natives enjoyed virgin California before the whites came. Progress will never stop and progress sucks ass

i only have two neighbors, one house is far too close (like 100') and they're okay, good natured, slightly hillbilly - their dogs though, frick me. pomeranians have no business out here, and every day i pray that a cougar will make a snack out of it.
other house is across the road, maybe 500' from my house, never hear or see them. perfect.
(this is my primary residence though, we're like 30 miles from the nearest town. thankfully the AirBNB menace isn't likely to be an issue, nor further development out here; thank you urban growth boundary)

Can't confirm. I live in a very rural area and to citydwellers it's "unfathomable" and "horrific" to drive so far to such a rural area. They will go up the road to the ski resort, to go skiing specifically. But they won't come out here just to "see nature". City people don't do that.

I agree, apartments could be just as good as houses if they were well done. For me the biggest complaint is sound proofing, they usually skimp on this in cheaper apartments.
For rich people an apartment is almost identical to a house except that they might not have a private pool or a private backyard. It is possible to have a private pool and backyard but you have to be really rich, maybe they need to make that a thing at lower prices in order to convince people to live in apartments.

We wouldn't need to constantly be increasing density if we let the population drop as it rightfully should. If we stopped importing Mexicans, not only would we suddenly need to build no additional housing, the costs of existing houses would go down. I do agree with your point though that apartment buildings would be a good way to reduce environmental impact - the problem is that American culture would necessitate it being owned by a landlord, who you live at the mercy of. I shouldn't have to explain why being a pseudo-slave to a fellow Amerimutt isn't a good idea.

A developer sees this and thinks "100 apartments worth of people all who need a place to shop and eat... and tons of cheap empty space surrounding them". The rest of the island would be paved over and replaced with a walmart and fast food restaurants within a year.

As a political strategy, making large cities like NYC, Los Angeles, etc. their own state would likely work the best. As someone from one of these states who desperately wants to escape, the reason why people leave is obvious: high COL, highly restrictive laws, high urbanization, etc. This all stems from the fact that these states are effectively held hostage by one or two major cities within them, the thus the legislative decisions do not reflect the lifestyles or wishes of most people outside of a very small geographic location. By making city-states, both sides would be satisfied: people in the city would have even more ability to push through their moronic legislation on themselves, and those from rural areas would be free to pursue their actual political aims. If NYC were it's own state, New York proper would become a strong conservative state overnight. If you address this, then people would feel much less pressure to leave, since they would actively be empowered to improve their own state rather than suffer through the learned helplessness they do now - which ultimately ends in them moving to the midwest and voting in a moronic way because it's "different from home"
