You have to understand that firstly, this is GD trying to sell a product, not actually a functional tank. There will be issues with this mockup, even if it drives and "moves" like a tank should, because at its core it's an advertisement.
There isn't two viewing ports in that image, there's three. They're set up like conventional periscope viewing blocks and attached to the three crew hatches into the hull crew capsule. Armor scheme isn't even a factor here because the AbramsX isn't a real tank.
The point of those is to show off the fact that the AbramsX is supposed to have a highly survivable hull crew capsule, and the actual specifics of those hatches don't really mean anything until we start seeing actual production designs.
All that's come out is cummins got the contract to finish developing the ACE for 78 million, I think it's more likely they put it in lighter vehicles like bradleys or M10s than in the new Abrams. The M1E3 will still probably be using the original hulls and engines with a completely redesigned turret, in my opinion.
I feel the same way ultimately, but looking back on tanks while trying to ignore any sense of "This is how it SHOULD be", the interaction between the hull, turret ring, and turret has always been an awkward one. With the amount of electronics and machinery in modern tanks, it's not like the manned turret is really any less complex, and any failure in a manned turret would still need the crew to get out and fix it.
As long as tanks are supposed to fight hull-down, having the men out of sight is just the smart option, and lets you turn crew space into protection. .
The idea is not getting to the point of being spammed with 25mm.
Why would you even bother with armor if your tank is supposed to always have full tactical awareness and strike first capability? If your tank can't shrug off 25 mm without being completely blinded then is it really a tank?
No tank made yet has been able to just ignore repeated, accurate autocannon fire. You bother with armor to reduce the general threat of a given weapon system. Armor is supposed to stop the occasional hit that would otherwise destroy or cripple the vehicle.
It's the same thing for plates in a plate carrier. They'll save you from catching a stray bullet to the ascending aorta, they WON'T save you from being magdumped at point-blank.
