The important thing to note about demographics, and really any big, long term trends, is that it's all about equilibrium. First you need to understand that china's population being so high wasn't the baseline, and now it's falling below that. China's massive population is the upswing of an equilibrium from decades ago.

In china, this is the result of going from a massive rural shithole into an industrial power in a handful of decades, then running face-first into having a middle class with expectations beyond survival. You couple that with population control strategies and cultural effects leftover from the boom period and you get a dramatic shrinkage.
