Better shotguns existed before the Auto-five. They're break-action doubles with ejectors. What the auto-5 brought was reliability at a reasonable price. It wasn't better, but it sure was cheaper.
No, they're nice to shoot assuming the rings are set up correctly. They can be hard recoiling if they're set up for low-recoil loads and then you fire off a magnum.
Actually the barrel can be much longer than 9 inches, it depends on which version you buy, I think. Regardless, it is expensive as hell, but a very beautiful piece of machinery nonetheless.
