well, absolutely no one cares about Mali. Syria and Iraq have resources and lie between oil/gas producers in the east and consumers in the west. They're also uncomfortably close to Turkey and Israel and contain Sumerian, Persian, Greek and Roman historical sites of international interest. What does Mali realistically have?
