Is there any way I can get my old 2G phones to work on 4/5g?

Is there any way I can get my old 2G phones to work on 4/5g? Like, if it was modular and I was able to purchase a 5G chip on Ali and replace the 2G one

    Short answer is no
Long answer is with a lot of work, software hackery, and reverse engineering. Since you're asking, the answer is no. Just buy a kaios flip phonem

Ah, yes, the firmware. It would need a custom SymbianOS too probably (not using razr)

Not only that but you'll need the proprietary binary blob that Qualcomm uses for their 5g modems (those can be sourced from android easily) and somehow make that work with either symbian or the retro Motorola OS on this mid 00s razors.
It's just going to be too much of an uphill battle for someone that doesn't have a background in electrical engineering, firmware coding, and well PrepHoleshit in general.
What would be much easier to do is get an 80s car phone working with an LTE/5g USB dongle connected to a nano Pi. The nano pi basically handles all of the modern I/O and then you just pipe it to the phone which probably uses some ancient dial up tech to work which is all standard anyway.

I guess the other option is to take the insides out of a modern dumb phone and put them into the body of a classic.

Easier said than done and you'll need to clarify what you mean by that. Are you saying the entire innards of some modern flip phone that is VoLTE approved and then sticking it into the shell of a razor? You might get away with that but if you have to modify the PCB boards then the effort just goes up exponentially.
Without the electrical schematics you'll either destroy the boards or spend an awful amount of time reverse engineering what Motorola did.
Not to be an ass. I'm a hardware PM for an electronics manufacturer and I know what goes into all of this shit and trust me it's a fricking shit show. The ohm thread can get the EE side of things but the other stuff, fml.

I was thinking the insides of a Nokia 110 placed in the body of an old 8800. I would need a bridge connector for the display and keyboard, and the camera and torch will be inactive.

I heard the same, it would have been a lot sooner if not for trackers on commercial trucks moving across the border, although I'm not sure if they use 2G or 3G here.

was idly browsing this there, seemingly near every smart meter (gas/electric) runs on 2G, some reason. And as they are probably only a quarter way through rolling those out, Bong 2G prob be around a while yet

Lots of legacy hardware uses 2G to function.

Salvage a 2g base station and install it at your house or in your car. This station will need a phone connection and all this will be done illegally, and while it's not impossible, it's out of reach to you. You will need to do a lot of research and PrepHole (and other boards) is not the place where you will learn all of that.

And they all suck here in the EU.

      >What about Doro ?
I have first-hand experience with them.
Their best designs are unibody, despite how convenient "opening the phone answers the call, shutting it hangs up" is for elderly people.
Their flip phones are designed to break very quickly, brittle plastic, weak hinge design that breaks after around a hundred openings ; still cost for around $100 new. Despite the elder-friendly design choices, considering how elderly people often lack dexterity and let things fall, it could be called a scam.
      >What about the Nokia Flips ?
KaiOS abominations, trash ergonomy, read the negative reviews about them.

And they all suck at battery autonomy, which is the main reason I prefer dumbphones over smartphones. They barely increased battery capacity compared to a 2G flip phone, but VoLTE requires more power than GSM communication.

Is this a AI post ?
I have cited the fricking reasons. Two companies on the EU 4G flip phones market (not counting Chinkshit with no aftermarket support), Doro and Nokia. Both produce unsatisfying products (and Chinkshit ain't better).

I suppose producing quality flip phones is not profitable in this age. I should perhaps try to make one myself.

          [...]
Never saw the point of a modern "dumbphone" that costs as much as cheap smartphones and also runs on android, but has no real features to go with it. Why not just use an old dumbphone?

          >Why not just use an old dumbphone?
New and safe batteries to replace spicy pillows may be unavailable as production of the required battery model ceased 12 years ago (of course, speaking of experience) ; 2G may already be over in your area.

I'm sure you could source some chinkshit replacement of questionable quality from aliexpress if it was a somewhat common model.

            You will never do it.

With a 3d printer, manufacturing the shell itself isn't that much of a costly PITA, and maybe I can just take the innards of a Doro like suggested by

I guess the other option is to take the insides out of a modern dumb phone and put them into the body of a classic.

and put them in a 3D printed shell with a robust hinge (I have no complaints with their software side of things).

Turns out a clamshell case is actually a pretty complex technical object, especially the hinge.

                >with no aftermarket support
                WTF does that even mean?
You don't need "support" on a fricking dumbphone. It, by definition, shouldn't ever get updates of any kind.

                >It, by definition, shouldn't ever get updates of any kind.
2 year warranty, replacable batteries (by design and by availability) and a proper instruction manual in English. That's the bare minimum.

Just switch to radio technology. The government being involved in sunsetting commercial cell phone technology ventures is troubling.

If there is a market for 2G it should be fine to remain for the foreseeable future. It probably will, it will still be there, and in use, but the telcos will artificially turn it off for retail customers so you buy new phones. That’s their only goal with this. Convince me I need a 10gb/s data feed to watch an 8k movie on my fricking phone while driving in rush hour traffic—that’s their only use-case.

The frequencies are generally lower for 2g, so they travel farther and through/around obstructions better than some of the new 5g high frequencies.
I still have problems getting 4g coverage.

2g/analog is still used for older alarm systems, monitoring/SCADA, backup comms, police trackers they surreptitiously put on your vehicle, and scientific signalling.

I see where youre coming from here, but letting telecoms conglomerates libertarian YOLO with whatever frequencies they like would hardly end well either

Can't be done, would need a massive redesign.

5G bands overlap 2G bands, 3G is redundant because base service is provided by 2G and IoT services by 4G. Phasing out 2G will, in some places, lead to a scenario where you have a data connection but no call service because voNR is a total clusterfrick in certain regions

I have one of these. Complete piece of shit, but that's kind of the point right? Either way, it can text, it can Spotify and it can call. It can check e-mail, but not very well. It has hotspot, so I can throw the iPad on if I need more.

Other than that its useless. Perfect for me, exactly what I was hoping for.

They’re reasonable for what they are (4g, sim card, unlocked, android). They’re also pretty easy to hack into if you want custom firmware, unlike the tapatalk phones.
I might buy one or a nokia 8110 if you wanted something to mess around with.

It's possible, but you'd need a chip that matches your phone's specifications (size, heat, pins, voltage) and custom firmware. This means you could potentially brick your phone.

Additionally, as someone who enjoys working with MCUs, it can be challenging to work in a cramped space like a phone case with a soldering iron.

If your goal is to use a retro flip phone with 5G, why not consider one of the later Motorola models like the Motorola RAZR V3 GSM?
