Did people suddenly become immune to .38 Special when 9mm striker fired pistols became the norm?

Around the mid to late 1980s a new breed of Black person emerged that can shrug off several rounds of 38/9mm, and is all but immune to smaller caliber rounds.
At this point cops were faced with a decision, outfit their departments with 10mm/44mag/12ga, or 9mm and accept that they're going to need 10+ shots per attacker. At first they were split but now they’ve mostly settled into the latter.

ain't no Black person shrugging off several rounds of +P+ hollowpoints or G9 Defense or Underwood

        cops just can't fricking shoot

shoot even the biggest giga Black person three times in the chest with any of the above and he's going down

Cops also lost their ability to shoot competently, an art that died with the service revolver.

I don't think most cops, or people in general, ever could shoot handguns well. With the low cost of ammo in the 21st century combined with easy access to information about improving your shooting, it's believable that an average guy who shoots 2000 rounds a year would be on par with the best shooters from 100 years ago. I always like to bring up the famous shootout at the OK Corral here, in which approximately 30 shots were fired at a distance of about 3-5 yards, and only 8 shots actually hit anyone. Shooting handguns is hard.

Eh. Cops are hindered by rules.
9/10 times a cop gets shot, tyrone is acting erratic, uppity, etc but Deputy Donut can't shoot him because BLM would burn his house down. I couldn't be a cop. If I feel like you have a gun, your acting erratic, reaching and clutching, and not complying I'd more than likely have you at gun point. Not trying to get into a wrestling match over a pistol with a tweaker/nog on the side of the highway.

Law enforcement needs to go back to two officers per car, better training, and more leeway when dealing with nogs.

That’s a funny way of saying the 1986 Miami Dade Shootout assblasted law enforcement so much they went overboard on hardware instead of training tactics.

I would say they're more useful for an average Joe than for cops. The capacity limitations aren't really an issue for a personal carry gun because criminals tend to quickly rethink their criminal actions once the first bullets fly. Yes, it is possible that someone might have to face multiple determined attackers, but it's not something we see because even criminals have basic self preservation instincts. On the flip side, criminals in police shootings are much more determined attackers because they're a cornered animal fighting to stay out of prison, so you see police shootings where the suspect absorbed a ridiculous amount of bullets and kept going. I love my LCR for daily carry, but if I was a cop, I would carry a semi auto.

somebody shooting under stress is not going to be as fast on target with a revolver, and is not going to be able to quickly send follow ups if they miss

Can you hit your target? Then yes a revolver is good. Use the right ammo.
Is your aim bad? Then practice and git gud

  9. 4 months ago

For a civilian, sure. You can likely aim correctly enough to use just about anything you want.
For a cop, no, none of his 17 rounds of 9mm will hit his cracked-out target. He needs to seek other employment.

Cops are expected to have a gun on their hip in an OWB holster. They're able to carry just about whatever they want, and aren't particularly restricted by ammo cap laws and whatnot, so there's no particular reason to pick one over a high capacity semi automatic. As a backup gun, sure.
For a civilian, yeah I don't see why not. Either you live in a state where you're limited by ammo capacity laws, or you want something that's comfortable to carry every day/like the unique functions a revolver brings. You're not gonna be an action movie hero, if you're jumped by more than one guy you're already kind of fricked. You're trading ammo capacity for the fact it's insanely easy to carry (airweight), and can arguably forgo a holster entirely and just put it in your pocket (DA trigger).
    >No one can tell you what's right for you, but you

      >if you're jumped by more than one guy you're already kind of fricked
Not necessarily. But the deal is that most criminals run when you start shooting, they'd rather you shoot their friend while they live.
Also worth noting that the most attackers shot in an SD shooting was 4, and was carried out with a 5-shot .38 snub. Goetz fired all 5 rounds, the 4th missed due to the swaying of the train. 4 hits, all 4 future doctors incapacitated.
So, a revolver actually is capable of taking on multiple attackers if that freak incident does happen. I'd say as long as you have at least 5 rounds in your gun, you're probably okay, so just carry what you want. Personally, I have many different carry guns and choose whichever one I feel like carrying the most. Sometimes it's a Jericho, sometimes a 1911, sometimes a Model 10. My decision is 99% cool factor because they're all going to be equally effective.

        >My decision is 99% cool factor because they're all going to be equally effective.
When the weather gets better, I would like to take all of my handguns out and shoot simple drills with them. Stuff like a double Mozambique, Bill Drill, 2 shots on 3 targets, or other simple stuff at 7 yards that's representative of what could be considered a "likely" self defense scenario. I want to see just how much of a difference in accuracy/time I get shooting my favorite gun vs least favorite, or something tiny like a Bodyguard 380 vs full size metal 9mm.

Dunno if you have any revolvers, but my advice is to learn how to "re-gear" your muscle memory if you're gonna shoot any alongside your autos. I find that after I shoot my autos, I reflexively try to manage the recoil the same way I do with the autos. Mostly compensating for the slide's movement so it doesn't stovepipe. Felt like a moron when I realized all I was doing was throwing off all my shots, with a revolver I do the opposite and try to hold it as still as possible since it can't stovepipe.

Revolvers will always have a comfortable place with civillians when it comes to concealed carry, home defense, and plinking. Picrel does 2 out of 3 of those for me very very reliably and accurately

I feel pretty good about CCing a .38 snub. I usually don't carry a reload, sometimes one speed strip. Six rounds feels like enough when I've never had to use it. I've only drawn it twice in self defense, both times against bulls grazing on National Forest land.

Preach, brother. Never forget that the world record is held by a man using a 5 shot snubby.

I suspect, though I have no real evidence, that there is a sort of confirmation bias to gun selection based on training.
let's say there are 2 guys. one carries a 9mm autoloader and the other carries a .357 mag revolver.
the 9mm guy trains to put as many hits down as possible. he can get 4 probably hits per second.
the .357 guy trains to make well aimed shots. he can put 2 well into center mass per second.

now lets say they both get into similar defensive shootings. they both incapacitate the attacker on the first hit, but he takes 1.5 seconds to actually go down to the ground.
the 9mm guy would magdump and think
    >wow that took me 6 shots. if I had a revolver I would have been cutting it real close
whereas the .357 guy would take a second aimed shot, realize the guy was on his way down before taking the third
