I’m tempted to be sad at the waste of a young life until I remember that he would blow up a children’s hospital and brag on telegram. TZD

The dignified Western thing to do is drone strike hospitals and not brag about it online

Not sound like a vatnik, but we do that in the US too. You can tm apply to WOFT street to seat at 18 y/o or commission at 22 and graduate flight school by 23 as an 2LT then get deployed as soon you get to a unit.

Pilots do tend to be older, but even the old guys started out at LTs and WO1s at some point.

Isn't the USAF's preferred way of recruiting pilots grabbing smart fit guys straight out of HS as young as possible, because, your fighter pilot career likely ends at 35?

No, they just take applicants from their regular commissioning sources. It's actually not all that difficult to become a pilot. It's just a long process and most who even consider it self-eliminate before ever even trying.

They grab guys with college degrees. Be it from an Academy or regular University/College. They accept guys into their 30s to go to flight school. I know a guy who’s 33 going right now.

You can only do "highschool to flight school" in the Army, I think.
Fighter pilot careers don't end because you're busted at 35, they end because as you go up the ranks you'll end up doing more officer bullshit than actually flying (unless your unit requires you to fly a lot). So a lot of pilots end up taking their experience to airline companies or private contractors.

The large majority of fighter pilots have a college degree (e.g. from the Air Force Academy). They come from the usual officer pipelines.

How many pilots Russia lost over Ukraine. Must be a fricking lot when they are harvesting such young pilots for combat missions

Not that much. Even if we take lowest known number (excludes those that well inside russia)
        >Russia - 434, of which: destroyed: 300, damaged: 19, captured: 115
        >Combat Aircraft (77, of which destroyed: 73, damaged: 4)
Lets assume everything had 2 people inside and half of them survived, that will be 250 pilots and they already scraped the bottom of the barrel after 3 months.
Lastest POW pilot interview was some old 50 years old fart. Vagner pilot was 65 years old pensioner.

Ukraine had some impressive strikes on air bases last year that likely took dozens of pilots on the ground.

russians don't have experienced pilots anymore. Why do you think they have no air supremacy and are flying a pathetic amount of sorties compared to their number of planes?

The entire BBC is on the verge of imploding. Maintaining their airframes is becoming more and more difficult, and some units that can't fly anymore are sending their excess airmen to the trenches

Isn’t this exactly what happens with japan in WWII? Attrition of experienced pilots and material/resources to replace lost aircraft? Isn’t Russia also suffering low birthrate and a dwindling working age population?
