Is it retarded to blow money on airsoft?

So I own two real guns (AR & G19), but shooting is expensive and I am just a college student. I used to airsoft when I was younger and have been feeling some FOMO recently. Also, I feel like the hobby might help to refine my tactics in the event I ever need to use firearms in real life. I’m thinking of dropping around $1000 on some gear and an HPA airsoft rifle (likely a clone of my real gun). Alternatively, I could save the money and spend it on more real life ammo or even an AP5.

What does /k/ recommend? I guess I want to larp, but I have nobody to do it with and airsoft might serve that end as well as other more practical ones

Nah. Its gay if its all you do but if you still have real guns then its fine. I collect replicas of stuff I will never own, like M240s and AA12s. I dont think they have any particular value from a training perspective, at least not in a capacity you couldn't do with your actual gun (reloading drills, dry firing, etc) but theyre fine as toys.

    You are in college.
Save your money for a home down payment, a better car, small business enterprise professional improvement, or savings for hard times. Jesus Christ.

If you want to LARP, do a workout regimine and sign up for ROTC / Officer Candidate School in your state's National Guard. Get paid to have a part-time job LARPING where your only disipline to get good is by gun point from an MP forcing you to show up to do a pushup.
100% paid for by the us tax payer. Otherwise you are not going to be operating beyond a .22 LR conversion kit or 22LR upper and some sissy mags for cheap bullets.

Dubs and trips are always the truth.

OP is an irresponsible moron trying to compete with established middle aged men's cheap Russian surplus gen x and millennials, who collected their kits over long periods. These are hobbies for Middle aged men, aging men, or well established men that can command a real paycheck to have disposable cash. I'm tired of kids burning up their savings to pay for an arsenal they're never going to enjoy because they can't get value out of what they're already invested in. Enjoy what you got. Earn better money, and return to the idea when you're no longer paying thousands to attend lectures. Buy food instead.

The FOMO is a lie. Airsoft should be at least 1/3 the price of it's real firearm pattern replica if not less. Even a respectable .22LR field and stream gun is $200.

And yes, you earn enough where you're financing this worthless junk on college student/ wagie levels of labor compensation, you are going to develop diseases and mental problems from personal neglect. It's not cool, and those you're impressing with this nonsense aren't friends with your best interests in mind.

Here's an idea, come home with $200 worth of wholesome nutritious groceries and a utility bill paid. Impress your parents by paying some of their bills for the life you've been given, the 18 years of love, care and protection they've given for free out of love. Give your mother a hug and show your father you've become a real man worthy of his name. Make a local girl laugh thinking your worthy of her offspring, good company, and her protection.

The real FOMO is missing out on life for a stupid game horseshit that gets old.

$1000 for an airgun is insanity double so as a 18-22 year old student with educational expenses on a typical low wage, where I can safely assume he's not pulling a full time job if he's attending regular classes. At any age for a student really, except I can assume a 25-30+ childless established with a real plan can afford it.

A full functional milspec AR can go for $500. Half of $1000
An optic should not exceed 1/3 of the gun's total value.
An airgun should not exceed 1/3 of the most discount IRL pattern of the gun replicated.
Expensive airguns are for rehabilitated convicted felons trying to maximize every lb pound of force, ft/sec velocity of performance without a background check. Larp a ban state that doesn't completely suck.

        $150 should be max budget.

When I was 16-24 I wish someone saved me from the trajectory of all the stupid decisions I made, being an immature moron that didn't know better. I can't take it back. I can only ask God to forgive me.

Being ridiculously over budget at that age, with an expensive responsibility load, is neglectful and distastefully materialistic where it's reasonable to confront his personal values.

Is a $1000 nerf gun so much more better than $100? The one piece of gun culture that needs to die is the excessive consumer materialistic chasing that makes us look like goobers

Used to deal with a Zoomer who lost $3000 in paychecks too moronic to use ADP, too silly to use a banking institution, that wouldn't stop window shopping the most exotic broken LARP guns that costs a mint during Covid lockdowns.

When I was in college, a Nugget and a SKS was a splurge for a tenth to a third of OP's budget.

The materialistic hobbyism culture portion of American gun culture of young adults competing with the collections 30 year old veteran in the hills of Virginia needs to stop. Young Adults have unaddressed problems they don't even know about to nuke large savings $1000 into the abyss for a toy. AR-15s pattern hate is for the status seeking culture of a pointless money pit

An AR-15 .22LR, or any decent .22 is $250-350 max

Op wants to know if he's being a moron. Yes he is.

You got a well made $1000 valued real AR-15, spending more than $333-350 on a modern optic as a non-operator civilian? Is that thing Night Vision? That tells me unaddressed fundamental marksmanship problems, trash brand selection, or wear glasses. A $350 budget will aquire an optic far above most of the competing world's infantry and peasant conscripts using irons that aren't specifically equipped state operators.

Dedicated warriors make zero compromise in budget. I'm talking about a college student and a regular minuteman with other concerns. 1/3 is reasonable self control.

Fun with frens, and also potentially useful for repelling animals you dont feel like killing, from your property.

Airsoft is a great way to get cheap simround training in which is rhe most valuable training available to military and law enforcement. You'd need to do real milsim shit though and not shooting a bunch of kiddos like it's laser tag. Your team of children and morons will also not have any unit tactics. Get with a good team so you can practice real useful tactics. I'd also recommend a few training courses from tactical schools so you can know what the team is doing isn't just some BS they made up. Training isn't expensive. I'd say 2 building clearing and 2 field fighting courses would set you straight, so about $4-500. morons will spend more than that on one gun or waste $500 worth of ammo building bad habits. Smart chads will get formal training and not need to waste ammo because they'll retain knowledge on how to not get killed.

When i was 18 i wanted a G19 and AR-15 because they were cool. Now i own them. It made me happy.

Dial that $1000 budget into $300, $150 each respectively between the pistol and the rifle. Otherwise no more than $200 per piece.

    SAFETY:
Do yourself a favor. Fluorescent Orange Paint the muzzle. Get Fluorescent Orange sticky tape strips to be New York, California, or New Jersey Airsoft compliant. Orange paint the tips. If your acting is too convincing the police don't panic and murder you for looking like a domestic t-rrorist when shooting bb's at your friends. Airsoft firearms come in similar premium materials to look and feel like real guns. Unless you're into attracting stranger's bullets, treat them as you would any real firearm.
You and your friends are going to get a proper face shield. Eye safety equipment.

Orange is uncool? Wrap the gun in orange so paranoid guys who would rather kill first then find out don't spill your intestines out on the floor when scared old ladies call the cops. Think about upholding the sport's reputation in the public mind's to avoid fueling lobbyists to ban airsoft toys as a public nuisance of kids up to no good. Remember, they look like real guns to the public, so their use will impact laws on real firearms no matter how unconstitutional. The sheriffs department needs guidelines to make snap decisions to drop dangerous folks.

Stay on a designated private property to play. Otherwise treat it with the respect of a real firearm, as strangers will treat you friendly or an imminent unknown threat based on your appearance.

This has some reasonably priced airsoft / bb guns at $150. I know nothing about plastic bb guns. I never had a plastic pellet replica assault weapon in my childhood, i had a pump bb gun that shot metal.

i'm a college student and i own an ar and glock as well. but i airsoft larp maybe once or twice a year at big events on the east coast because or class scheduling conflicts. however i'd recommend it to solo players because you get to meet great people and it's a ton of fun. a lot of great experience to just go out and larp.

i sold all of my airsoft gear that i ran in high school and just run an E&L AK that is stock and a somewhat modified classic army M4. i have one Velocity Systems plate carrier, an alice pack, and one chinese chest rig and it's great for milsims.

    >I’m thinking of dropping around $1000 on some gear and an HPA airsoft rifle
Don't go full moron, at most buy a GBB pistol that is not too expensive so you can practice drills and safety so you dont ND like a moron if you have zero experience, a replica of the gear you own or plan to have in the near future as well, otherwise pick your used gear if possible (cheap gear days are gone on that though).
I would put most of the money on ammo (also a good cheap 9mm if you dont own one), a PC even if it's an airshit replica, and actual plates, Level IIIA is what you mostly would need, but picking Level IV would be ideal, but good luck doing that with 1K.

Airsoft is for kids, doing that shit after you're 21 is for homosexuals.

You're moronic for spending as much as you are more so than for what you want to do. When I was in school my friends bought a few shitty $20 electric units and had a blast with them. Stuff like that or a little more ($200 absolute tops, what are you thinking?) is fine and might actually be valuable to practice for home defense and potential muggings, the kind of things people actually use their guns for. For the rest, just practice reloading and dry fire since you have actual guns anyway. You can train to be Rambo later if you still want to once you have time and money, just stay in shape and get the .22 conversion others have mentioned for now.
