is russia really having to resort to reverse engineering 90s western designs?

    >TFW you remember when Russia was considered a near peer to the US
    >now Russia is known to be so far behind that people think they could advance if they examine quarter century old Western technology that's designed to be fired at the enemy and end up in a place where the enemy could recover it after its use

fooled the US and you didn't it?

It DID, but the things the US produced to counter that threat are kinda hard to counter now.

    >can barely produce enough precision missiles of its own native design
    >people fear they’ll somehow produce in useable numbers, a reverse engineered missile with tech 20+ years ahead of their own
    >”bb but what about muh china?!”
China either has already hacked the info or have the resources to develop their own equivalent.

China is the same as russia. Did you miss the thread where the chinks placed doubts in the patriot while also refusing to see evidence of the downed khinzal missiles?

Chinks might have the same moronic nationalist outlook as the vatniks, but at least they have an impressive industrial capacity, the electronics and the engineers required to replicate 20 year old Western tech in significant numbers. Just compare Russia's "stealth"(lmao) fighter and China's.

The only thing I want out of this story is for Russia to release internal pictures of the thing so we can see what's inside. They probably won't though, gays.

As for the tech, trust there's a reason why these things were OK'd for transfer to Ukraine to begin with. Everything inside them is known, probably, to Russia and they lack of industry to re-create them even if they wanted to. Because if they had the industry they'd have something similar by now in service.

the export model with reduced range is already used by India, Egypt, Qatar, Saudis and UAE so its not like its some super secret weapon that can't possibly be obtained or studied by china/russia.

The storm shadow is a fairly basic cruise missile. the only interesting part compared with say a Kh-555 is the warhead (which is well known already) and the guidance system that can actually hit the target its aimed at (which Russians can't reverse engineer because their own cruise missiles use 1970s computation)

What makes one missile better than another? I don't know, not a weapons engineer. New engine design? Better/different firmware + software?

I thought missiles were pretty 'solved' as far as good designs. Would the internals of a cruise missile be a surprise to anyone?

Missiles are not solved at all lol. Vectored thrust, movable fins, layer composition, warhead yield, software+compute hardware, sensors, mesh network communication, swarm AI capabilities

There's a frickton of things you can add to a missile to improve it or make it harder to counter, or make it do bigger boom. We're not even close

    Reverse engineering is a meme.
If you are capable of recreating something, you should already be capable of making it yourself.
