Is it a good idea to use Drum magazines for AR-15 rifles?

Is it a good idea to use Drum magazines for AR-15 rifles?

I heard somewhere that a drum magazine is not good since with 100 - 150 rounds you can quite easily heat up the barrel alot and risk breaking it .

You can just use room temperature bullets. I leave mine out overnight to cool off before I shoot

That's a good idea. I had been putting them in the freezer but my shooting buddy said that was overkill. I switched to the fridge but you're right, room temp is probably fine. And this way I won't have to lug a cooler of ammo with me on range days.

    >frick forgetting weapons shill
Put a heavy barrel on that bad boy and youre fine
ignore people who think you shouldnt have mags that hold more than 5 or firearms at all

Drum mags add substantial weight to your rifle and are far more likely to have a feeding malfunction than a conventional 30 round box magazine. Those are much bigger concerns than a hot barrel after a couple of hundred rounds. You arnt running a belt-fed MG42 at 1200rpm, if you are worried about heat get a better barrel.

      This
Also I feel like the gas tube would melt way before the barrel “broke” from overheating.

Also you can't easily bring spares or store the damn thing when empty like you could with a normal stick mag, partialy one of the reasons why the Russians ditched drums on their subguns in favour of stick mags

    Their main issue is unreliability.

Drum mags add weight, don't always feed properly, and allow you to easily ruin your barrel by getting it too hot.

Leave the 50-100 round dumps to actual MGs designed to handle it.

    Nice airaoft drum

Drums suck dude, too heavy, too easy to jam, slow to load .
The 75 round drum for an ak isnt bad if its the top feed, back feed sucks

But id rather have 2 30s than 1 75 drum for an ak

What about two 40 or 45 round magazines?

makes SOME sense for CQB since you can just prefire every cornr on semi auto without having to worry about running out.

probably not something you should have on your gun if you're on walkabout

Drums are heavy as frick and they jam significantly more often that standard mags.

They're fun to frick around with at the range, but never trust your life to one.

Drums for me have been hit or miss. AR double drum, works fine in my rifle but fails to feed in buddy's with a binary enabled. AK 100 rounder, front tab made out of pot metal and damaged and built wrong, rest of it is perfect in material and craftsmanship works flawlessly if I shove the bottom of it up, even on faster-than-I-can-pull-the-trigger-fire otherwise it jams every round cause it sits too low.

    >pain the ass to load
    >a lot of moving parts, a lot that can go wrong
    >requires upkeep to work properly
    >very heavy and cumbersome
    >$150 for one of those, you can buy 15-20 normal mags for that price that are more practical and reliable
    >if you drop it you risk breaking it and its hard/impossible to fix broken parts
    it just isnt practical
they look cool as frick and it would be fun with full auto if it worked right but it isnt really worth it, especially with how fast you can load a new mag in an AR

someone on the 3d printer hype train needs to make a lower like this and mags to fit it.

something similar was my go-to airsoft mag. It was based because you didn't even need to bring spare mags or reload ever

I got a D-60 Magpul for free and it's actually pretty sweet. Ironically I only use it for precision shooting matches cause it's short enough to shoot prone with and I can load it before the match and not have to waste time keeping track of mags or reloading as much. So far it's reliable enough. Also used it once for a 60 round full auto mag dump, which had no issues.
