What are the downsides to having a slightly overgassed rifle? Yes your eyes will sting a bit more, but I would rather have that than my rifle shortstroking.
I have heard "overgassing kills"
Explain pls

to my understanding overgassing just puts more wear on the rifle, but if it's only slightly overgassed it should be fine more or less. Severe overgassing can outright damage a rifle depending on the design however
thanks anon, seems to make sense
honestly slightly overgassed is best considering pressure changes based on altitude. your perfectly gassed ar wont function if you got to extremes or if its in sub optimal conditions. all the military ars are slightly overgassed for a reason.
extremely overgassed is bad. slightly is fine. tuning it so its a perfect racegun with x mousefart ammo means it wont function with the rest of the ammo.
If it will run with mousefart ammo, regular ammo will be over gassed.
Severe overgassing generally results in both extraction and feeding issues due to high bolt velocity so it should not be assumed that being tuned for mousefart loads will still allow for proper function with full pressure ammo.
good to know, I dont really use shitty ammo for practice anyway, i use a standard pressure M193
yall dumb. all guns are gassed for adverse environments. Overgassed means gassed pass the point of aiding function and now being detrimental. Like you can cause feeding issues, with both the AK and ar15 by increasing bolt speed too much by overgassing. Its not just parts wear, gas powered rifles have a range of gas pressure they can reliably function inside of and its up or down. Not just being undergassed that makes a weapon fail to feed.
Slight increase parts wear, regardless the gas port will start to enlarge with time, making it much more overgassed as time goes on
i think being slightly overpressured is good because it helps blow gunk out of youre a moron and drop it in mud or sand or some shit.
You can't get perfectly gassed without something to adjust your gas system. Just look at Crane showing that mid length is better for long term reliability and parts longevity which should've been common sense since m16s that has rifle length gas systems were being used in the early 2000s and even earlier.
So yes overgassing is bad, it's like running an aluminum BCG but without one.
Crane determined this with M855A1 which generates extreme pressures.
Carbine gas was determined more optimal for M193/M855 in a 14.5” barrel a ling time before M855A1 entered service.
I don't know
Overgassing isn't a big deal until you put on a suppressor, and then it fricking sucks when your gun queefs in your face everytime you pull the trigger and you inhale steamy cancergas
"Slight" overgassing is actually desirable for a defensive/service rifle due to fouling, weak ammo, or cold temperatures. For a AR15 pattern rifle a ejection pattern 90° to 75° is considered "properly gassed".
>once shot some turbo hot 75gr Hornady bthp with 26.2gr of cfe 223
>2870-2900fps
>ejection at 15°
>brass has a sizeable dent due to deflector
>scared to shoot more than one at a time and hand chamber them
My 7.5" was overgassed and I snapped the gas key off the BCG. if you're doing an SBR build, get a pigtail gas tube
That's gnarly. I've seen the pigtails before, do they actually work?
I remember someone making a tube with an adjustable block integrated into it so you could still run it with an fsb, I think that would probably be the best option, if they're even still available.
The military uses carbine gas m4's because overgassing indeed promotes reliable cycling. Just keep a bunch of extra gas rings around in your pistol grip and call it good. Severely overgassed rifles will have the bcg slamming around inside and wearing chewing at the aluminum but that was more like the 7.5" pistol gas ar's. Most people dont have suppressors so its not much of an issue, if you have an overgassed rifle then suppress it youre just accelerating that wear.
What are the parts that need to be replaced eventually? The whole upper receiver?
springs bolts and barrels are what commonly degrade
the buffer is also a consumable if the other parts are worn out. if its in good condition the buffer wont be damaged.
Cool down your go-to ammo, and fine tune your gas so it'll lock open on empty mag, then add 1/8 turn, and put some red loctite on it.
>Is being slightly overgassed b(...
My gf says so.
I don't care anymore as long as it doesn't feel like shit and brass is flying out
>Overgas?
>stings a lil
>more recoil
>more wear
probably a weakness of the ar design that there's no easily adjustable gas block so as a result you have to overgas it for optimal field reliability. It seems real convenient to have settings on the fly for adverse conditions suppressed shooting or bolt action without having to hold down the sniper button
tuning gas for your ammo will make it shoot smoother and last a little longer but it's mostly a luxury like all fine tuning
Overgassed means excessive gas beyond the point of aiding in reliability. A rifle being overgassed is a bad thing. A rifle being undergassed is a bad thing. An overgassed rifle that is then suppressed is giga-shit.
