IoT Doorknob Malfunction - Need to Break Door Down

I’m locked out of my own apartment because they decided to install some trash IoT device for my doorknob called “SmartRent” and the fricker malfunctioned just like you’d expect.

Already talked to my building apartment’s leasing office shits and they contacted maintainence… they haven’t shown up yet and I fricking have shit to do on monday.

They had floated the idea of just breaking the door down, and maintainence hasn’t shown up yet, so I think I’m literally going to have to go buy and axe and do this shit myself.

I’m going to document that the shit’s broken beforehand to cover my ass, and might end up having to buy a new door.
Any thoughts or pro-tips on this dogshit, boys?

Yeah no other option with a moron who bought IoT door knobs and ones that fail-closed too

I mean if there was a fire or emergency both landlord and manufacturer of that dog shit would get sued into oblivion

Get explicit permission in writing before doing anything stupid or you're going to end up paying for it

Get a clipboard and a hi vis safety vest and act like you're supposed to be there. Door should open.

I’m literally paid up, and hit up the cücks in the leasing off and they didn’t know what to do.
The maintenance guys are sitting on their ass and haven’t called back.

I’m thinking about just swapping out the lock for my own and just stop paying rent when this is over. They obviously wouldn’t know how to get rid of me if their goofy little app doesn’t control the door lock.

Call them back and toss in "constructive eviction" and see if that lights a fire under them.

Call the sheriff's office and file a report that the landlord locked you out of your apartment illegally.

Even if you were late or way behind on rent, there are squatter laws pretty much everywhere that prevents a landlord from just kicking you out without going through certain legal processes.

The sheriff's office may fine your landlord and I imagine he will get your door turned back to a normal lock to avoid this happening again. They may even send someone to kick in the door for you, which will not be your responsibility to repair since it will be officially documented that the police did it, not you.

I'm late to the thread, so this is all for next time. I'd talk to the landlord now and tell him, if this happens again, I'm going to report it to the sheriff's office. Can we avoid all that and just switch it back to a regular lock?

I’ve checked some videos and stuff online, and it looks like the best approach is to get one of these things.

The best approach is to just saw off the latch between the door and the frame, but I’m not sure I’ll have enough space, so I might need to just saw off a chunk of the door itself

one good hit with a sledge hammer will break open most residential doors. Solid wood door, fancy locks? who frickin cares, the jamb is 3/4 pine.

And who the frick thinks its a great idea to replace a mechanical system thats been in place for hundreds of years with buggy fricking software, jesus frickin christ, any homosexual yuppy that installs this desires to get locked out

      >one good hit with a sledge hammer will break open most residential doors
      Correct answer.
Actually, if you want to so this the easiest way: literally call the cops and offer a training opportunity. They'll ask to talk to the rental people to make sure it's okay. After that, they'll show up with the ram and let Lil Jimmy take a whack.
Yokel make some friends on the force if you offer them a couple beers after they let you in.

Just another device to sell your data from or for the landlord to lock remotely when they're sick of your shit.

Sure but I've heard of a landlord who threw out (stocked somewhere else they can get it) all the stuff from an apartment from a guy who refused to pay rent or leave and then changed the lock, the entire thing that is. Yes, he got fined but the amount of money lost waiting for a legal eviction is ten times more so it's worth it if you're dealing with scumbags.
With these things you can just haul their shit out and lock them out without changing anything.

Buy a drill. Home Depot and Lowes don't actually ever close. Drill the fricker out. Be nasty about it.

Credit card trick, or if it's a deadbolt, drill and release the bolt. The anons suggesting hammers and police are correct too, but that's a bit more destructive. Don't cut up the frame with a reciprocating saw.

All those shitty electronic locks use a magnet to activate the bolt. All it takes is a strong magnet in the right place and you can pop it right open. Wouldn't be surprised if someone has already posted how to go right through these.

Wouldn't it be easier to access your windows and break one to get inside? Easier to cover up temporarily and don't have to leave with a door busted for others to invade through.

Asks the guy next door if you can go through there and climb or use a ladder if it can reach, or fire escape.

SmartRent uses Yale deadbolts. Take the back battery cover off, and use the button to do a factory reset. Then press Gear > 2. You can re-pair to another Z-Wave controller and also reset the master password. Oh, and turn off that awful beeping any time you touch it, letting your neighbors know when you leave.

You deserve everything that you are experiencing now.

Also that looks like regular Yale keypad deadbolt, so you could also probably just stop being moronic and google how to get into it.
